Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Kodi black screens have several distinct causes. A television reporting “No signal” points to the HDMI and display chain; a black Kodi interface points to GUI or display configuration; and visible menus with black video point more often to decoding or rendering. Follow the matching branch below rather than reinstalling Kodi or disabling hardware acceleration at random.
The fastest way to fix a black screen on Kodi is to identify which black screen you have. If the television says No signal, troubleshoot the HDMI and display chain. If Kodi’s menus are visible but the video image is black, test hardware decoding. If the entire Kodi interface is black or unusable, restore the display mode, monitor selection, skin, or GUI settings. If the problem affects other Windows applications too, investigate the graphics driver.
Do not start by reinstalling Kodi or permanently disabling hardware acceleration. Both can destroy useful settings without addressing the actual fault.
First, identify the symptom
| What you see | Most likely area to investigate | Start here |
|---|---|---|
| The TV or monitor says “No signal” | Input, HDMI cable, receiver, display mode, or hardware | Check the physical signal path |
| The Kodi window is black, but the display is receiving a signal | Monitor selection, resolution, fullscreen mode, skin, or GUI settings | Restore the Kodi interface |
| Kodi menus work, but every video is black | Hardware decoding, graphics rendering, or an incompatible display mode | Test hardware acceleration |
| Only one movie, file, or stream is black | The file, codec, stream, add-on, or source | Test a known-good local video before changing system settings |
| Kodi and other applications flicker or go black | Windows, GPU driver, cable, display, or broader hardware fault | Follow the Windows graphics-driver branch |
Also note the operating system, Kodi version, device model, display model, and what changed immediately before the fault. Kodi behaves differently on Windows, Linux, Android, macOS, iOS, tvOS, Raspberry Pi, LibreELEC, CoreELEC, and other builds, so a fix for one platform is not automatically valid on another.

If the display says “No signal”
A “No signal” message usually means Kodi has not yet become the relevant problem. Work through the signal path before changing Kodi settings:
- Confirm that the TV or monitor is using the HDMI input connected to the Kodi device.
- Reseat the HDMI cable at both the Kodi device and the display.
- Try another HDMI input on the TV or monitor.
- If the signal passes through an AV receiver, HDMI switch, or capture device, connect the Kodi device directly to the display temporarily.
- Test a known-good replacement cable.
- Power off and restart the display and Kodi hardware. Some displays and receivers do not renegotiate resolution or refresh rate correctly until both ends restart.
If the cable is damaged, too long for the required signal, or unable to handle the resolution and refresh rate being negotiated, a High Speed HDMI cable can be a sensible isolation test. This recommendation applies to a blank or intermittent signal, flickering, or a display that loses the picture during resolution or refresh-rate changes. A replacement cable will not repair a corrupted Kodi GUI, an incompatible skin, a broken add-on, or a graphics-driver problem.
If the entire Kodi interface is black or unusable
When the display itself works but Kodi’s menus do not, the problem is more likely to be a bad display setting, monitor selection, skin, GUI configuration file, or graphics-rendering path.
Try fullscreen and monitor controls
If you can see a cursor, a partial interface, or can operate Kodi from a keyboard, try these reversible checks:
Recommended Free Tools
- Toggle Kodi between fullscreen and windowed mode.
- Open Kodi’s display settings and select the correct monitor.
- Choose a resolution supported by both the Kodi device and the TV or monitor.
- Temporarily disable unusual multi-display behavior, including blanking other displays.
- If a second monitor is connected, disconnect it and restart Kodi.
- When the screen goes black briefly during refresh-rate switching, wait for the configured delay to finish before force-closing Kodi.
Kodi’s display controls separate monitor selection, display mode, resolution, fullscreen-window behavior, blanking of other displays, and the delay after refresh-rate changes. A black screen immediately after changing one of these options is often a configuration problem rather than a failed installation.

Switch back to the default skin
If the fault began after installing or changing a skin, add-on, or interface customization, use the default Kodi skin if the menus are still reachable. Remove or disable the recently changed skin only after recording what you changed. A skin can make the interface appear unusable even when Kodi itself is still running.
Reset GUI settings without deleting the whole Kodi profile
Back up Kodi’s userdata folder before resetting anything. It contains personal settings, add-on data, databases, and other configuration. Do not confuse a GUI reset with deleting the entire Kodi profile.
With Kodi fully closed, a commonly documented community recovery method is to locate and rename guisettings.xml, for example to guisettings.xml.backup. On the next launch, Kodi creates a new GUI settings file. This can recover a bad fullscreen, monitor, resolution, or other interface setting, but it also removes customized GUI preferences.

The userdata location varies by operating system and distribution. Use Kodi’s platform-specific userdata documentation for the correct path rather than assuming that a Windows path applies to Android, macOS, Linux, Raspberry Pi, LibreELEC, CoreELEC, tvOS, or iOS. If Kodi is still running in the background, exit it completely before renaming the file; otherwise it may rewrite the damaged settings when it closes.
If Kodi menus work but the video is black
When navigation, settings, and library screens are visible but the picture area is black, test the video-rendering path instead of resetting the GUI.

Test hardware decoding one setting at a time
- Open Settings > Player > Videos.
- Locate the hardware-acceleration control available for your platform.
- Temporarily change one decoding option, such as DXVA2 on Windows, VDPAU or VAAPI on relevant Linux systems, or VTBDecoder on Apple platforms.
- Replay the same known-good local file after each change.
- Record which setting produced which result, then restore the original setting if it was not responsible.
This is a diagnostic comparison, not a general instruction to leave hardware acceleration disabled. Turning it off can increase CPU usage, reduce playback performance, or remove practical support for high-resolution video. The correct decoder depends on the operating system, GPU, Kodi build, driver, and video format.
If only one movie or stream is black, compare it with a known-good local file. A single failure points more strongly toward that file, codec, source, stream, or add-on than toward Kodi’s entire video pipeline. If every video fails while the menus remain visible, hardware decoding and the graphics driver become more plausible.
Update Kodi, add-ons, and drivers safely
Record the installed Kodi version before updating. If it is old, update through the official Kodi download channel or the trusted distribution channel for your operating system. Check the official Kodi add-on repository for updates as well.
A third-party build, unofficial repository, or manually installed add-on is not equivalent to the official Kodi package. Do not install random builds or piracy-focused repositories as a supposed black-screen fix; they can introduce incompatible skins, add-ons, or modified libraries that make diagnosis harder.
An update is a maintenance and compatibility step, not proof that Kodi caused the failure. If the black screen began immediately after an update, note that timing. Test the default skin and, if practical, a clean Kodi configuration before repeatedly reinstalling the same build.

Windows: investigate the graphics driver when the problem is broader than Kodi
A Windows graphics-driver problem is more plausible when the black screen extends beyond Kodi, begins after a Windows or GPU update, includes flickering, or coincides with a display-driver recovery message. It is less persuasive when Kodi alone is affected and other applications render normally.
- Run Windows Update and check the official support or download page for the computer or GPU manufacturer.
- Record the current driver version and the date the problem began.
- Create a restore point or make a suitable backup before changing drivers.
- Install one reviewed driver package, restart Windows, and test Kodi with the same file and display connection.
- If the issue began immediately after a driver update, consider the manufacturer’s supported rollback option rather than installing several driver versions at once.
An optional Windows driver check may be performed with a third-party utility such as Outbyte Driver Updater. Outbyte’s own materials say that the product scans for missing, outdated, or corrupted drivers and offers backup and restore features. It is not an official Kodi recommendation. Use official Windows and GPU-manufacturer sources first, create a restore point or backup, manually review every proposed driver, and avoid changing drivers blindly. A driver updater can introduce a new compatibility problem if it selects an unsuitable package.
Use a keyboard when the remote cannot reach Kodi’s menus
For a TV-connected computer or Raspberry Pi, a basic compact USB keyboard can provide a second control path when a remote, HDMI-CEC connection, or mobile remote is not working. It is a recovery aid, not a display repair.
Kodi’s keyboard controls include shortcuts for common interface actions and Ctrl+Shift+D to toggle debug logging. Connect the keyboard directly to the Kodi device, then try the fullscreen/windowed control or use it to reach the logging settings. On Android TV and other devices with limited USB support, a wired keyboard may require a compatible adapter or may not be supported by the hardware.

If the preceding tests do not identify the fault, collect a log while reproducing it. A log is substantially more useful than saying only that Kodi “went black.”
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Open Settings > System > Logging and enable Enable debug logging.
- If the interface is available, enable only relevant component logging, such as video or windowing, when appropriate.
- Reproduce the black-screen problem once using the same file, display, and connection.
- Exit Kodi normally if possible so the log is written completely.
- Locate the current
kodi.logor previouskodi.old.logfor your platform. - Review or submit the complete log through Kodi’s recommended log-sharing route, removing personal information first.
Log locations differ across Android, Windows, Linux, macOS, tvOS, iOS, LibreELEC, CoreELEC, and other platforms. Use the platform-specific Kodi logging documentation rather than copying a path from a different operating system.

Include the Kodi version, operating system, hardware model, GPU, display model, HDMI and receiver path, whether menus remain visible, the exact file or stream affected, and any recent driver, skin, setting, or add-on change. Do not claim a root cause from symptoms alone when the log or a reproducible comparison is still missing.
What not to do
- Do not treat every black screen as a video-decoding problem. A “No signal” message belongs to the display chain.
- Do not assume a new HDMI cable fixes software-only failures. Use one to test an unstable or absent signal.
- Do not permanently disable hardware acceleration without checking performance. Treat the change as a reversible test.
- Do not delete the entire Kodi profile before making a backup. Rename the GUI settings file first when that is the suspected cause.
- Do not repeatedly reinstall the same unofficial build. Use an official Kodi package and test a clean configuration when appropriate.
- Do not install random repositories or builds. They can create the very skin, add-on, and compatibility problems you are trying to diagnose.
- Do not use a cloud broadcasting service as a Kodi repair. A service designed to continuously broadcast prerecorded video to platforms such as YouTube or Facebook does not repair Kodi’s local display or playback pipeline.
A practical decision sequence
- Check the message on the display. “No signal” means input, cable, receiver, or hardware first.
- Check whether Kodi menus are visible. If not, test monitor selection, fullscreen, resolution, second-monitor behavior, the default skin, and backed-up GUI settings.
- If menus work, test a known-good local video. This separates a single stream or file from a system-wide playback fault.
- Compare hardware-decoding settings. Change one platform-specific option at a time and record the result.
- Check official updates. Update Kodi, official add-ons, Windows, and the GPU driver through trusted channels.
- Collect a debug log. Reproduce the failure once and provide the platform and hardware details with the log.
That sequence keeps the most disruptive actions—resetting configuration, changing drivers, or reinstalling software—until there is evidence that they are relevant.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can an HDMI cable cause Kodi to show a black screen?
A cable can cause a missing, flickering, or unstable HDMI signal, especially when the display says “No signal.” It cannot repair a bad Kodi skin, corrupted GUI settings, add-on failure, or graphics-driver problem. Test another input, connect directly to the TV, and use a known-good cable before buying a replacement.
Should I disable hardware acceleration in Kodi?
If Kodi menus are visible, open Settings > Player > Videos and temporarily test the hardware-acceleration option available for your platform. Change one setting at a time and replay the same known-good local file. Restore hardware acceleration if disabling it does not help, because software decoding can increase CPU load and reduce high-resolution playback performance.
How do I reset Kodi when the interface is unusable?
Back up the userdata folder, close Kodi completely, and rename guisettings.xml rather than deleting the entire Kodi profile. Kodi creates a fresh GUI settings file on the next launch. This can remove a bad fullscreen, monitor, resolution, or interface setting, but it also removes customized GUI preferences.
How can I tell whether a Windows graphics driver is causing Kodi’s black screen?
First use Windows Update and the official support page for your computer or GPU manufacturer. A third-party updater such as Outbyte Driver Updater is optional, not an official Kodi recommendation. Create a restore point or backup and manually review every proposed driver before installing it.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Fix Kodi black screens by matching the remedy to the symptom: HDMI and input checks for “No signal,” display and GUI recovery for a black interface, hardware-decoding tests for black video, and driver investigation when other applications are affected. Back up Kodi userdata before resetting settings, use official software sources, and collect a debug log when the cause remains unclear.
