Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFirst find out where the picture stops moving: in OBS’s Media Source preview, in OBS’s output or connection status, in YouTube’s Live Control Room, or only for some viewers. Each points to a different fault. If the source is frozen inside OBS, start with its playback properties and the file or decoder; if OBS is still moving but frames are being dropped, check rendering, encoding, or the network instead. Change one setting at a time so you can tell what helped.
Locate the freeze before changing settings
Compare the same moment in the OBS preview and YouTube’s Live Control Room. This is a diagnostic distinction, not a guarantee: separate playback, OBS, network, and viewer issues can look similar from the outside.
- The image is frozen in OBS’s Media Source preview: investigate whether playback ended, whether the source is hidden or reactivating, the media file or decoder, and OBS resource pressure.
- OBS remains animated, but its status or YouTube reports a poor or missing feed: inspect OBS rendering/encoding indicators, network status, and YouTube stream-health messages.
- The broadcast preview looks healthy, but only some viewers report buffering: their devices or internet connections may differ. OBS notes that viewer buffering can happen without OBS reporting dropped frames.
For the official distinctions and checks, see OBS’s stream connection troubleshooting, encoding performance troubleshooting, and stream buffering troubleshooting, as well as YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance.
Check the Media Source playback properties
In OBS, open the affected Media Source’s properties and review the controls below. OBS’s documented settings and defaults come from its Media Sources documentation, dated January 11, 2022; labels can vary with the installed OBS version.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Loop: turn this on if the file should repeat when it reaches the end. OBS documents it as off by default. Without looping, a clip reaching its end can look like a freeze if the last frame remains visible.
- Restart playback when source becomes active: OBS documents this as restarting the file when the source is in the current scene and visible; the documented default is on. Check whether the apparent freeze follows a scene change or the source becoming visible.
- Use hardware decoding when available: test both enabled and disabled. It uses the GPU for supported file types when suitable decoding hardware exists, and is off by default. It is not a universal fix.
- Close file when inactive: this unloads the file while the source is hidden, freeing memory, but OBS warns that the source may take a short time to reappear. If the problem follows scene switches, temporarily disable this setting as a controlled test.
- Show nothing when playback ends: verify this if a still image appears at the end of a clip. This option hides the source when playback finishes instead of leaving its last frame visible.
If you are using a playlist or need extended media support, OBS documents VLC Video as an alternative source type. VLC must be installed, and 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. Loop Playlist is on by default for VLC Video, with a configurable visibility behavior. Switching source types changes the playback path and adds a VLC dependency, so use it to isolate a playback issue—not as a guaranteed repair.
Check for OBS rendering or encoding overload
A source that freezes in OBS can be affected by resource pressure, but rendering lag and encoding overload are different from a file that has simply stopped playing. Check OBS’s status indicators and logs for those performance symptoms before changing output settings.

- Reduce competing GPU use and simplify resource-heavy scenes; remove sources and filters you do not need.
- Use lower-resolution media when the stream does not need the original resolution.
- If performance remains poor, consider lowering the output resolution or frame rate. OBS suggests trying 30 fps if 60 fps is not working.
These steps trade output detail or smoothness for a lighter workload. They address rendering and encoding pressure; they are not direct fixes for a Media Source that has ended or is being hidden.
Troubleshoot dropped frames only when network indicators point there
OBS defines dropped frames as a connection that is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate. Severe drops can disconnect the stream. If the Media Source is moving in OBS but OBS reports dropped frames, use OBS’s connection troubleshooting guide to check the ingest path rather than changing playback controls.

- Choose a bitrate your stable upload connection can sustain; lower it if necessary.
- Check whether a VPN, security tool, or network-management software is interfering.
- Use a wired connection when practical; Wi-Fi can be unstable.
- Dynamic bitrate can lower quality to respond to network changes, but it does not fix the underlying connection problem.
These network steps apply to the connection from OBS to YouTube. They will not unfreeze a file that is already still in OBS’s own preview.
Validate YouTube encoder settings and preflight the stream
YouTube advises testing with audio and movement representative of the planned stream before going live, then monitoring stream health and messages in Live Control Room. Its published encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264/H.265/AV1, up to 60 fps, CBR, and a recommended 2-second keyframe interval (not over 4 seconds). Bitrate recommendations depend on codec, resolution, and frame rate, so use the current YouTube encoder settings table and ensure your stable upload can sustain the selected bitrate. YouTube says it automatically transcodes live video into different output formats. Its guidance does not specify a special bitrate or guaranteed preflight duration for a 24/7 stream.

When some viewers buffer despite a healthy feed and no OBS dropped frames, avoid assuming that the broadcaster is the only cause: viewers have different devices and connections. YouTube’s recommendations should be weighed against resolution and frame rate when compatibility across viewers matters.
