YouTube offers live-stream ads, Super Chat and Super Stickers, and channel memberships. Which features you can use depends on YPP eligibility, country availability, and feature-specific requirements. A small channel should distinguish the earlier fan-funding milestone from the higher threshold for Watch Page ad revenue.

YouTube’s current eligibility pages, accessed in 2026, list expanded YPP eligibility in countries where the program is available at 500 subscribers, three valid public uploads in the preceding 90 days, and either 3,000 qualified public watch hours in the preceding 12 months or 3 million qualified public Shorts views in 90 days. This can unlock potential fan-funding and Shopping features, subject to feature-specific requirements and YouTube review; it does not itself grant Watch Page ad revenue. Full ad-revenue eligibility
YouTube’s current eligibility guidance, accessed in 2026, lists the higher ad-revenue threshold as 1,000 subscribers plus either 4,000 qualified public watch hours in the preceding 12 months or 10 million qualified public Shorts views in 90 days. Meeting the numbers is not automatic acceptance: YouTube reviews the channel against its requirements. YouTube: YPP eligibility.
For both routes, distinguish qualified public watch hours from a raw view-duration total. YouTube excludes livestreams that are unlisted, deleted, or not converted to VOD from the listed qualified watch hours. Check the eligibility totals in YouTube Studio rather than assuming every hour from a continuous broadcast counts.

Can a 24/7 stream earn money, and do streams over 12 hours count?
A live stream can use YouTube’s monetization features if the channel and stream are eligible, but staying live around the clock does not itself qualify a channel or guarantee ads. There is also an archive complication: YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived, while a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. A single 24/7 broadcast therefore should not be treated as a reliable archived replay or a dependable way to accumulate qualified watch hours. YouTube: archive live streams.
Plan archive handling deliberately. YouTube recommends keeping a local archive backup; review the resulting VOD and the qualified-hour figures in Studio. If you need replay availability or eligible watch hours, do not assume an uninterrupted broadcast will automatically provide either.

How should a small channel build a monetization plan?
- Make the stream worth returning to. Use programming that offers clear value to the intended audience, such as a coherent documentary collection, a scheduled theme, or useful context between selections. A 24/7 label is not a substitute for meaningful viewer value.
- Clear the rights for every element. Confirm you have the necessary rights for all video, music, and other audio. Monetized content must comply with YouTube’s channel monetization policies and advertiser-friendly content guidelines. Watch-hour totals do not override policy compliance or channel review. - Check eligibility and feature availability. In YouTube Studio, review the Earn area and your current YPP progress; availability depends on country, channel status, age, and feature-specific rules. Treat the expanded threshold as a possible fan-funding milestone, not as ad approval.
- Offer fan support that fits the channel. If memberships become available, define perks you can sustain. If Supers are available, make live chat useful and welcoming without pressuring viewers to pay.
- Add ads when eligible, then evaluate the viewing experience. YouTube recommends its automatic live mid-roll option. YouTube reported that channels using automatic live mid-rolls had over 20% average uplift in instream ad revenue per hour compared with channels not using them, across 207 countries in January 2024. That is a platform-reported aggregate comparison, not a forecast or guarantee for an individual channel. Test the setting against your format and audience response. What does 24/7 operation cost, and do you need special hardware?
YouTube supports sending a stream with either encoder software or a standalone hardware encoder; external audio and video hardware can also be integrated. A hardware encoder is optional, not a monetization requirement. Start by assessing whether your existing computer and software can reliably handle the broadcast. Continuous operation also means accounting for the cost and effort of keeping the stream source running, maintaining a local archive if needed, and handling interruptions. A managed cloud service may reduce the need to host the stream yourself, but adds a service cost and does not improve YPP acceptance. Compare the recurring operating cost with what the channel can actually afford; do not base a spending decision on unverified revenue projections.

- Watch hours are lower than expected: Check whether the live stream was public and converted to VOD. YouTube excludes unlisted, deleted, or non-VOD livestreams from the listed qualified watch hours.
- A continuous broadcast has no replay: YouTube says a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured. Plan a local archive backup and check the VOD after the stream.
- The channel meets a threshold but features are unavailable: Thresholds do not guarantee approval. Check country availability, channel standing, age and feature-specific rules, then review the channel’s YPP status in Studio.
- Ads appear inconsistently: YouTube does not guarantee that ad slots will serve. Treat automatic mid-rolls as an option to evaluate, not a guaranteed revenue increase.
- A stream is rejected or unsuitable for monetization: Review rights for all audio and video, channel monetization policies, advertiser-friendly guidelines, and whether the channel provides original value. Streaming duration alone cannot resolve these issues.
- The stream stops when the home computer is off: A DIY software-encoder setup depends on its host machine and connection. You can use an appropriate standalone encoder or consider cloud hosting for uploaded-video loops; neither changes YouTube’s eligibility rules.
