Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIf your YouTube live stream has audio but no picture, first check FFmpeg’s input listing: does it show a video stream for the intended source? Then trace that video through stream mapping, filters, encoding, and YouTube’s live preview. Audio arriving at YouTube confirms only that the audio path works; it does not prove FFmpeg is sending video.
Find where the video disappears
Use the FFmpeg log to follow the video path in order: input, mapping and filters, encoder and output, then YouTube ingest. Don’t change several settings at once; the first point where video is absent or fails is the branch to investigate.
- Run the command with the same inputs and options you normally use, and inspect the
Input #...sections near the beginning of the log. - Confirm that the intended input lists a
Video:stream, not justAudio:. - Inspect the
Stream mapping:section and check whether an input video stream is routed to the output. - If video is mapped, look for filtergraph or video-encoder errors and confirm whether FFmpeg completes the output.
- Check YouTube’s live preview for moving video, not just an audio meter or audible sound.
Keep a copy of the complete command and relevant log lines as you troubleshoot. Redact the YouTube stream key before sharing them.
If FFmpeg does not detect video at the input
If the intended input’s log section has no Video: entry, YouTube settings and output mapping are not the first problem to solve: FFmpeg has no detected video stream from that input to send. Check that the command selects the intended file, device, or source, and that the input format and options are appropriate for it.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
For a capture device, supported formats and device options vary by platform and hardware. FFmpeg’s device documentation describes device-specific format support and format-listing controls. Consult the section for the actual device and platform rather than copying options from a different setup. If the source is a file, verify that it contains video and that the command points to the expected file.
If the input has video but the output mapping does not
FFmpeg selects streams automatically when an output has no -map options. Once you specify -map for an output, you control its stream selection; an explicit mapping can leave video out while audio continues.

For example, if the log confirms video on input 0 and audio on input 1, the intended mapping might be:
-map 0:v:0 -map 1:a:0
Use those selectors only if your input listings show those streams. Input numbers and stream indices depend on the command; copying the example without checking them can route the wrong stream or fail to select one.

Check complex filtergraphs
If the video passes through -filter_complex, confirm that the graph produces a video output and that the output is mapped. A labeled result might be mapped as -map "[outv]", but the label must match the graph’s actual output label. Filtergraph outputs that are unlabeled have special handling, so do not add a label mapping without checking the graph and FFmpeg’s stream-selection and filtergraph documentation.
If video is mapped but encoding fails
A mapped video stream can still fail during output setup or encoding. Read the log around video-encoder initialization and check the selected encoder, whether it is available in your FFmpeg build, and whether it accepts the input’s dimensions, frame rate, and pixel format. Encoder capabilities and options are encoder-specific; FFmpeg documents them in its codec and encoder documentation.

Pixel-format conversion may be needed when the input format is not accepted by the encoder, but the appropriate conversion depends on the input and encoder. Do not assume -c:v copy will fix an incompatible format: stream copy avoids decoding and re-encoding, so it cannot perform filter-based pixel-format conversion. If you add a conversion or change the encoder, verify the resulting video stream in the log and in YouTube’s preview.
Check the YouTube ingest before broadcasting
After FFmpeg reports a video output, verify the actual incoming stream in YouTube’s live control room or ingest preview. Look for moving video as well as audio. YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance recommends testing with representative audio and movement in the video. A stream accepted by YouTube’s ingest or transcoded for viewers cannot regain source video that FFmpeg omitted.

Use the YouTube encoder guidance for the ingest settings appropriate to your stream. If the source video is absent or unmapped, changing ingest settings is not a substitute for fixing that earlier stage.
When HLS is relevant—and when it is not
Switching ingest protocol is not a general fix for missing or unmapped video. YouTube documents HLS as an ingest option for HDR or codecs that RTMP does not support, and notes that HLS has higher latency. It has its own format and encoder requirements; use it only when the codec or content calls for that route, following YouTube’s HLS ingest guidance.
Common symptoms and next checks
| What you see | Likely stage to check | Next check |
|---|---|---|
| The input lists audio but no video | Input source or capture setup | Confirm the source, device selection, input format, and device-specific options. |
| The input lists video, but the mapping lists only audio | Output stream selection | Review every -map option and verify its input and stream indices. |
The command uses -filter_complex, but no video reaches output |
Filtergraph output selection | Check that the graph produces video and that its correct output is mapped. |
| Video is mapped, but encoder setup reports an error | Video encoder and format compatibility | Check encoder availability, dimensions, frame rate, and pixel format against the encoder’s supported formats. |
| FFmpeg outputs video, but YouTube preview has no moving picture | Output and ingest verification | Test the actual incoming stream with representative movement and review FFmpeg’s output and YouTube’s encoder settings. |
| The codec or content requires a different ingest route | Protocol choice | Consider HLS only for a supported use case, and apply its separate encoder requirements. |
What to share if the cause is still unclear
An exact command-line correction depends on your inputs and log. To get useful help, share:
- The FFmpeg command with the YouTube stream key removed.
- Your FFmpeg version and build information.
- The relevant
Input #...stream listings. - The
Stream mapping:lines. - Any filtergraph or video-encoder errors, plus the output lines around them.
Keep the stream key private: anyone with it may be able to send video to your YouTube channel.
Or let it run in the cloud
For uploaded-video loops to YouTube, StreamNeo keeps a stream running from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month.
