Start by identifying the playlist format and checking the files at the point where the jump occurs. If you use FFmpeg’s concat demuxer, every file must have matching streams—including codecs and time bases—and inaccurate duration information can shift timestamps at file boundaries. The information available here does not include your command, playlist, media details, FFmpeg version, or logs, so there is no reliable one-line fix; the checks below narrow down the cause.
1. Identify what kind of playlist FFmpeg is reading
“Playlist” can mean different inputs, and their behavior is not interchangeable. The concat demuxer reads a text script listing files in sequence; an HLS/M3U8 playlist is a different input. Check the command’s input argument and the playlist file itself before changing flags. FFmpeg’s concat demuxer documentation describes the demuxer workflow and its requirements.
- If the command uses the concat demuxer, check the script’s listed file order, file paths, and the files’ stream properties and durations.
- If the input is HLS/M3U8 or another playlist format, do not apply concat-demuxer assumptions; diagnose that input type and its logs separately.
2. Capture the transition where the video skips
- Save the exact FFmpeg command and the relevant playlist contents.
- Run the command with its normal logging visible and note the time or file boundary where playback jumps.
- Compare the playlist order with the files FFmpeg opens and the transition shown in its log. This helps distinguish a file-order or input issue from a timestamp problem at a boundary.
- Record the FFmpeg version and inspect the media files involved, especially the file immediately before and after the jump.
Without those details, it is not possible to determine whether a particular skip is caused by incompatible streams, incorrect duration data, or something outside FFmpeg’s concat processing.
3. Check stream compatibility and duration
The concat demuxer is intended for files whose streams match. FFmpeg’s documentation says: “All files must have the same streams (same codecs, same time base, etc.).” It adjusts timestamps globally, and the duration assigned to each file affects where the next file begins. A mismatched stream setup or inaccurate duration can therefore produce artifacts at a boundary that look like a skipped or jumped video. See the official concat documentation.

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Inspect each listed file’s streams, codecs, time bases, and reported duration. Pay particular attention to duration values that may be estimates derived from bitrate, or to truncated files: either can leave duration information inaccurate. An FFmpeg-user mailing-list reply discussing a 2024 case with varied codecs, sizes, and aspect ratios also explains the same-stream requirement and recommends transcoding inputs to common properties first; it is a practical explanation, not a replacement for the documentation: FFmpeg-user mailing-list discussion.
4. Choose the concat method that fits your files
| Method | Use it when | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Concat demuxer | Inputs already have compatible matching streams and you want to avoid re-encoding. | It does not normalize heterogeneous files; mismatches and inaccurate durations can cause boundary problems. |
| Concat filter | The inputs need concatenation while re-encoding to a consistent output. | Re-encoding is required, so it is not the no-re-encode alternative. |
FFmpeg’s FAQ on joining video files identifies the concat filter for concatenating while re-encoding. Do not assume stream copy will normalize files that differ in codec, time base, or other stream properties. Either normalize incompatible files to a common configuration before using the demuxer, or use the concat-filter workflow when re-encoding is appropriate.

5. If FFmpeg looks correct, check YouTube’s stream health
If FFmpeg processes the transition in the expected order but viewers still experience freezing or degraded output, investigate the encoder and the outbound stream rather than changing concat settings blindly. YouTube recommends checking Live Control Room stream-health messages, encoder output, and a local archive, as well as testing outbound connection strength where needed. Its live-streaming troubleshooting guidance also recommends testing with representative audio and motion.
Match settings to the actual stream
YouTube’s encoder guidance specifies RTMP/RTMPS, supported video and audio codecs, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended two-second keyframe interval with a four-second maximum. Its bitrate recommendations vary by ingestion codec, resolution, and frame rate. Use the bitrate row for your actual stream in YouTube’s encoder settings guidance; a generic bitrate copied from another resolution or codec may not fit. Check that the encoder’s resolution and frame rate match the stream you intend to send and that your available upload capacity can sustain it.

6. Troubleshooting by symptom
| What you see | What to check | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| The jump happens exactly as one listed file ends and the next begins. | Whether the concat demuxer is in use, stream compatibility, and the reported durations of the adjacent files. | Correct the input issue or duration information; normalize incompatible files or use the concat filter if re-encoding is needed. |
| FFmpeg opens files in an unexpected order, or a listed file is absent. | The playlist’s entries, paths, and FFmpeg’s input log. | Correct the playlist or paths, then verify the processed order in the log. |
| FFmpeg processes the boundary as expected, but the YouTube broadcast freezes or degrades. | Live Control Room stream-health messages, encoder output, local archive, and outbound connection strength. | Use YouTube’s stream-health and encoder guidance to locate the issue; match bitrate to codec, resolution, and frame rate. |
| The playlist is HLS/M3U8 rather than a concat script. | The input format and logs for that playlist type. | Diagnose the HLS input separately; concat-demuxer stream-matching advice may not apply. |
