If a YouTube livestream ends at the same moment an MP4 finishes, the first thing to fix is playback continuity: loop the video or queue another item so the encoder keeps sending content. Then check that the encoder remains connected and review the stream’s auto-stop setting in YouTube Live Control Room. A network failure is a separate possibility, especially if the stop happens at different times.
Why a YouTube livestream can stop when an MP4 ends
An encoder-based YouTube livestream depends on the encoder continuing to send content. When a finite MP4 reaches its end, its playback source may stop producing video; if the encoder then stops sending, the live feed can end too. YouTube’s encoder guidance describes ending a stream by stopping the content sent from the encoder, but it does not document the end-of-file behavior of every player or encoder.
There is also an auto-stop option in YouTube Live Control Room. When enabled, it lets the encoder stop the stream when the encoder stops streaming. If the stream ends exactly at the file endpoint, playback exhaustion is the first thing to investigate; auto-stop may explain why the YouTube stream ends along with the encoder output.
Make playback continue past the MP4 endpoint
- Open the playback source or playlist in your encoder or player. Find its repeat, loop, or playlist controls. The exact labels and steps depend on the software; YouTube’s guidance does not specify controls for third-party applications.
- Enable repeat or queue the next item. The goal is to keep the source producing video after the current MP4 ends. If the stream needs uninterrupted output between items, use an intended slate or other suitable filler rather than allowing playback to run out.
- Check that the encoder is still sending content. Confirm its output is active and connected to YouTube using the stream URL and stream key configured for the broadcast. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance explains the connection and the role of stopping content from the encoder in ending a stream: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Preview before going live. Check the output through the encoder preview and YouTube’s preview, then monitor audio and video after starting. YouTube also recommends confirming that the stream is accessible from the channel and watch pages and checking that a local archive file continues to grow. See YouTube live streaming tips and Streaming tips.
Check YouTube’s auto-start and auto-stop settings
In YouTube Live Control Room, inspect the auto-start and auto-stop options for the stream. These options let the encoder start or stop streaming. If you reuse stream settings, YouTube carries those selections forward, so do not assume a new broadcast has different behavior from the previous one. For a workflow where you want to control the stream manually from Live Control Room, verify the setting and follow YouTube’s current instructions: Manage live stream settings.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Diagnose the stop by when it happens
| What you observe | Likely area to inspect | What to do next |
|---|---|---|
| The stream stops at the same point each time, at the MP4 endpoint | Playback ended or the playlist ran out; this is a diagnostic inference from the timing. | Enable repeat or queue another item, then confirm the encoder continues sending a feed. |
| The encoder stops and the YouTube stream ends together | Encoder output at end-of-file and the auto-stop setting | Check the encoder’s end-of-file behavior and inspect auto-stop in Live Control Room. YouTube documents the setting at Manage live stream settings. |
| The stop occurs at varying times, unrelated to the file length | Network reliability, upload capacity, or encoder stability | Review stream health messages, upload capacity, encoder settings, and local archive growth. YouTube recommends leaving bandwidth headroom; see Streaming tips and Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions. |
| YouTube still shows the stream as live, but viewers see a frozen or blank source | Playback/source output or the encoder scene | Inspect the source and encoder preview. The cited YouTube guidance does not give app-specific scene-recovery instructions. |
Keep the stream stable after fixing the loop
Looping fixes a file that runs out; it does not protect a stream from network or encoder problems. YouTube recommends leaving 20% upload bandwidth headroom. Its encoder-settings guidance recommends keyframes at a 2-second frequency and says not to exceed 4 seconds. These are general streaming recommendations, not remedies for an MP4 reaching its endpoint. Consult YouTube’s streaming tips and encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for the relevant setup guidance.
YouTube states that streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That threshold does not establish that a longer stream will be preserved as one archive. See Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
