The fragment 直播? does not identify a recognized YouTube Live error code or a specific FFmpeg failure. To find the cause, compare FFmpeg’s complete stderr output with the timestamped message beside the stream-health indicator in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Note whether the failure happens before connection, during startup, or after the stream has been running. Redact your stream key before sharing any logs.
Start with the exact error, not the fragment
A YouTube Live error needs to be diagnosed from its full message and timing. The characters 直播? alone do not establish a cause, and the available official guidance does not confirm that they are a localized rendering of a particular error.
- Save the complete FFmpeg stderr output. Include the lines immediately before and after the failure. Record whether FFmpeg fails before connecting, connects but cannot start the stream, or runs successfully before stopping.
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Check the stream-health indicator and read its timestamped messages. Match their times to the FFmpeg output; the dashboard may identify a stream configuration or health problem that the encoder log does not explain by itself. See YouTube’s troubleshooting guide for live streams.
- Protect your credentials. Remove the stream key and any other private credentials from logs, screenshots, commands, and support posts. A stream key grants access to your broadcast.
For streams managed through YouTube’s LiveStreams API, the API also exposes stream status and health-status configuration issues. That is a separate diagnostic route from reading FFmpeg’s local output; see the LiveStreams API documentation.
If FFmpeg cannot connect or start
Check the stream key and destination
If the error occurs before the stream becomes active, verify that FFmpeg is using the current YouTube stream key and the intended ingest destination. YouTube’s instructions for streaming with an encoder direct creators to get the key from Live Control Room and update the encoder. Do not post the key while asking for help.

Check the software integration
If you authenticate through a third-party software login instead of entering a stream key, YouTube advises contacting that software provider when its YouTube Live integration produces a startup error. The integration may need an update; changing video bitrate will not repair an authentication or compatibility failure.
If the stream connects but YouTube reports a health problem
Use the exact health message to decide what to inspect. YouTube recommends updating encoder software, checking how the stream looks and sounds in the encoder, reviewing encoder errors and CPU load, and checking a local recording if one is being made. These checks help distinguish an encoder, source, or machine-load problem from an outbound network issue. The official live-stream troubleshooting guide lists incorrect stream format and unsupported audio or video settings among possible errors.

- If the local recording also has the defect, investigate the source, capture, or encoding path.
- If the encoder output and local recording look healthy but YouTube reports dropped frames or connection trouble, test the outbound network as described below.
- If CPU load is high or FFmpeg reports encoding problems, reduce workload or correct the encoder configuration only as indicated by the symptoms.
Verify FFmpeg’s output against YouTube’s ingest settings
Check the selected protocol, codec, resolution, frame rate, keyframe interval, audio format, and bitrate as a set. YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guidance specifies the supported settings; do not change a parameter without a mismatch or diagnostic that points to it.
| Setting | YouTube guidance | What to check in FFmpeg |
|---|---|---|
| Video codec | H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS ingestion | Confirm the selected encoder and output codec match the ingest route. |
| Frame rate | Up to 60 fps | Check the output frame rate, not just the source file’s nominal frame rate. |
| Keyframe interval | Two seconds recommended; do not exceed four seconds | Set and verify the encoder’s keyframe interval if YouTube reports a keyframe or format issue. |
| Audio | AAC or MP3 | Confirm the audio codec and that an audio stream is present when expected. |
| Rate control | CBR | Check that the output uses constant bitrate if the current settings call for it. |
| Bitrate example | For H.264 at 1080p and 60 fps: 6 Mbps minimum and 17 Mbps recommended | Use the bitrate row for your actual resolution and frame rate. These are YouTube’s published settings, not a promise that your connection can sustain the rate. |
YouTube recommends monitoring stream health during the event and reviewing its messages. The complete settings table is on the official encoder settings page. These figures are presented there without a publication year.

If FFmpeg looks healthy, test the outbound connection
A stream can encode correctly and still fail when the upload path cannot sustain its total bitrate. Test outbound upload capacity and stability under conditions similar to the broadcast. Compare available upload bandwidth with the combined bitrate of the stream and any backup stream, and leave headroom: YouTube’s network tips recommend 20% room above stream demand. This is guidance, not a guarantee that a connection with a nominally sufficient speed will remain stable.
- Check for upload fluctuations or interruptions during the failure window, not only the connection’s best speed-test result.
- If the stream uses both primary and backup outputs, include their combined demand in the bandwidth check.
- A wired connection can help isolate Wi-Fi as a variable, but it is a diagnostic option, not a universal fix or a YouTube requirement.
YouTube warns that “A disruption on your connectivity could mean a broken stream.” See its streaming tips for network guidance.

Choose an ingestion protocol only when it fits the stream
For compatible workflows, YouTube recommends encrypted RTMPS over unencrypted RTMP. YouTube also documents HLS and DASH ingestion, but they are not drop-in fixes: protocol support differs by codec and latency behavior, and segment-based HLS or DASH ingestion usually adds latency. Confirm that your encoder, ingest destination, and stream configuration all match the selected protocol before switching. Consult YouTube’s live encoder settings guide and its HLS and DASH ingestion guidance.
Common symptoms and the next check
| Symptom | Likely area to investigate | Next check |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg fails before it connects | Destination, network reachability, or command configuration | Read the complete stderr output, verify the configured ingest destination, and test outbound connectivity. |
| Connection succeeds but YouTube does not start the stream | Stream key, account/session integration, or stream configuration | Refresh the key from Live Control Room if using key-based setup; if logging in through software, check with its provider. |
| YouTube reports a format or unsupported-setting error | Codec, audio, frame rate, keyframe interval, or bitrate mismatch | Compare FFmpeg’s actual output with the current settings for the selected ingest protocol and resolution. |
| FFmpeg or a local archive has defective output | Source, encoding configuration, or local CPU load | Inspect the encoder preview, FFmpeg errors, CPU load, and local recording. |
| Output looks normal locally, but the stream drops or degrades | Upload capacity or connection stability | Test sustained outbound upload, account for primary and backup bitrate, and isolate Wi-Fi if relevant. |
| Changing to HLS or DASH does not help | Protocol and encoder settings may not match | Verify protocol compatibility, stream destination, codecs, and the latency tradeoff before retrying. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded videos looping as a YouTube live stream, rather than to broadcast a live FFmpeg source, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live.
