You can use systemd to keep a long-running encoder process running and to restart it after certain failures—but systemd cannot confirm that YouTube is receiving watchable video and audio. First validate your encoder command and source, then run that command as a dedicated service, check recovery, and verify the stream in YouTube Live Control Room.
This guide covers the service-management workflow, not a tested end-to-end FFmpeg command or a unit file verified against a specific Ubuntu release. FFmpeg options depend on whether you are looping a file, capturing a camera or desktop, or relaying another feed. Check directives against the systemd version installed on your Ubuntu server.
Choose the source and encoder before creating a service
A service unit manages a process; it does not supply or configure the video source. Decide what the stream should send and how the encoder will obtain it:
- Prerecorded file: use an FFmpeg command that reads the file and loops or otherwise supplies content continuously. Confirm that the file’s video and audio streams are suitable for the intended broadcast.
- Camera: identify the capture device and verify that the encoder can open it after startup. A disconnected or unavailable device can prevent the stream from beginning.
- Desktop or scenes: OBS is a GUI-oriented option for scenes and overlays, not a drop-in equivalent to a headless FFmpeg process. OBS’s Linux requirements include an OpenGL 3.3-compatible GPU and X Window System or Wayland; meeting those requirements does not guarantee encoding performance (OBS System Requirements).
- Incoming relay: configure the encoder to receive the source and forward it to YouTube, and consider what happens if the incoming feed disappears.
Install FFmpeg or configure the chosen encoder, then test the complete encoder invocation interactively before putting it under systemd. Use absolute paths and make sure the service account will be able to read the source, configuration, and any required device. The exact command and options are source- and build-dependent; no single FFmpeg command is safe to prescribe for all Ubuntu installations.

Check YouTube eligibility and prepare the broadcast
YouTube’s current live-streaming help says a channel must be verified, must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days, and the streamer must be at least 16. Check the channel’s eligibility before troubleshooting the encoder (YouTube Help: Get started with live streaming).
- In YouTube Studio, create or select the live broadcast and open its stream settings.
- Choose the ingest details and copy the stream key for the encoder. Treat the key as a credential: do not paste a real key into an article, screenshot, shell command, shell history, or log.
- Set up the encoder to use YouTube’s current ingest guidance. YouTube currently recommends RTMPS; consult its current encoder settings and bitrate table rather than relying on an old preset (YouTube Help: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions).
Match output settings to YouTube and your connection
YouTube’s published guidance calls for constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and no more than four seconds between keyframes. Its documented protocol guidance includes H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1, and frame rates up to 60 fps. For stereo audio, it lists AAC or MP3 at 44.1 kHz. Confirm the current requirements for the selected ingest protocol and encoder before going live (YouTube encoder settings; YouTube bitrate and resolution guidance).

Bitrate must fit both the chosen output and the upload connection’s sustained capacity. For H.264, YouTube’s settings table checked in 2026 lists 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended for 1080p at 30 fps, and 6 Mbps minimum and 17 Mbps recommended for 1080p at 60 fps. These are YouTube recommendations, not proof that a particular connection can sustain the bitrate. Leave capacity for network variation and other traffic, and test with the actual source and settings.
Before relying on a long-running service, test video movement and audio representative of the eventual stream. YouTube advises testing before the live stream, then monitoring stream health and reviewing messages during the event (YouTube Help: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions).

Create a dedicated account and protect the stream key
Run the encoder as a dedicated unprivileged Linux account rather than as root. Give that account only the access it needs to the media, configuration, and any capture device. Set explicit ownership and permissions for source files and configuration so the service does not work only when launched from your personal shell.
Do not place a stream key in a world-readable unit file or pass it as an ordinary environment variable. The systemd execution documentation explicitly warns that environment variables are not suitable for secrets and describes credential directives (systemd.exec). Credential features and syntax depend on the installed systemd release. Check the local manual and choose a mechanism supported by that version and compatible with how the encoder reads its key. If using a restricted configuration file instead, limit its ownership and permissions to the service account and administrators; do not print the secret during debugging.

Define the systemd service
Create a system unit that directly runs the encoder command you already validated. Use absolute paths, an explicit working directory if the command needs one, and a service account with access to the source. The unit below is a structure to adapt, not a verified drop-in for every Ubuntu/systemd version. Replace the illustrative command with the tested invocation and configure secret delivery using a method supported on the target system.
[Unit]
Description=YouTube live encoder
After=network-online.target
Wants=network-online.target
[Service]
Type=simple
User=ytstream
Group=ytstream
WorkingDirectory=/srv/ytstream
ExecStart=/usr/bin/ffmpeg [validated options and source] [YouTube ingest destination]
Restart=on-failure
RestartSec=10s
[Install]
WantedBy=multi-user.target
The bracketed text is explanatory, not literal FFmpeg syntax: substitute your own validated arguments and arrange for the stream key without embedding it in a publicly readable unit. Verify that the FFmpeg executable path is correct with command -v ffmpeg. Check the installed systemd manuals for supported unit directives and validate the saved unit before starting it.

Restart=on-failure asks systemd to restart a service when it exits unsuccessfully or is terminated by an unclean failure. It does not restart every intentional clean exit, and repeated failed starts can be subject to systemd rate limits. A restart delay can reduce rapid retries, but it is not a substitute for fixing a bad source, invalid key, or network problem. See the systemd documentation for restart conditions and start-rate limiting (systemd.service; systemd.unit).
Enable the service and verify the actual broadcast
- After saving the unit, reload systemd’s unit definitions:
sudo systemctl daemon-reload. - Enable the service at boot and start it now:
sudo systemctl enable --now ytstream.service. - Check the process state and recent service messages:
systemctl status ytstream.serviceandjournalctl -u ytstream.service -f. Review errors without exposing the stream key. - Open YouTube Live Control Room for the selected broadcast. Confirm that YouTube receives the stream, that the preview shows moving video, and that audio is present. Review YouTube’s stream-health status and messages.
An active (running) systemd status means the process is running; it does not establish that the encoder is producing valid frames, that audio is present, or that YouTube is ingesting the broadcast. A process can remain alive while output is frozen or broken, so monitor both the service and YouTube’s stream health.
Test recovery—and know what a restart cannot fix
Test recovery before depending on the service. Do this on a test broadcast or at a time when interrupting the stream is acceptable.
- Record the service and YouTube health state while the stream is healthy.
- Stop the encoder process deliberately in a way that produces an unclean failure, then check whether systemd starts it again. Confirm in YouTube Live Control Room that the broadcast recovers, rather than relying only on a new process ID or an active service state.
- Separately test a brief network interruption and restoration if you can do so safely. Confirm whether the encoder reconnects and whether YouTube resumes receiving the stream.
- Review logs and platform messages. If repeated failures trigger systemd’s start-rate limit, inspect the unit state and logs, fix the underlying issue, then reset the failed state if needed with
sudo systemctl reset-failed ytstream.servicebefore starting it again.
Simple process restarts cannot guarantee recovery from every failure. An exhausted file, invalid stream key, unavailable camera, missing incoming relay, sustained bandwidth failure, or broadcast state that needs action in YouTube may require source-specific looping, reconnection logic, monitoring, or operator intervention. A process that stays alive but sends a frozen image or no audio may not trigger Restart=on-failure at all.
Troubleshooting common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Service fails immediately | Wrong executable path, invalid arguments, missing source, or permissions | Read journalctl -u ytstream.service; run the validated command as the service account and verify paths and file/device access. |
| Service runs, but YouTube receives no stream | Incorrect ingest destination or key, encoder output failure, network issue, or broadcast setup issue | Check encoder output messages and the selected broadcast’s Live Control Room status. Keep the key out of logs and screenshots. |
| Video is frozen or audio is missing | Source or capture failure, malformed output, or process alive despite unusable media | Inspect the source and encoder output, then verify motion and audio in YouTube’s preview and stream-health messages; systemd process state alone will not detect this. |
| Repeated restarts stop occurring | Start-rate limiting or repeated underlying errors | Inspect systemd status and logs, fix the cause, and use systemctl reset-failed if the unit has entered a failed, rate-limited state. |
| Stream does not recover after a network interruption | The encoder did not reconnect, the uplink remains unavailable, or YouTube’s broadcast state needs attention | Check network reachability, encoder reconnect behavior, and YouTube Live Control Room; a process restart policy alone does not prove end-to-end recovery. |
Or let it run in the cloud
