If Apple Music says “A server with the specified hostname could not be found,” first check Apple’s System Status, then test Apple Music on cellular data or a different Wi-Fi network. If it works on another connection, the original network’s DNS, router, VPN, or filtering is the likely culprit. The message does not, by itself, mean your subscription or library is broken.
What the error means
A hostname is a server’s internet address in human-readable form. DNS translates that name into an address your device can contact. The error means Apple Music could not resolve or reach a server it needed. DNS trouble is one possibility, but the same message can also appear during an Apple service outage, when a VPN or network filter interferes, or when a particular item cannot load.
Apple’s guidance for Apple Music connection and content-loading problems is to check service status and internet access, review VPN or security software, restart the router, update software, verify date and time, and try another network (Apple’s connection troubleshooting guidance).
First, isolate where the problem is
- Open Safari and try a normal website. If it will not load, troubleshoot the internet connection before Apple Music.
- Check Apple System Status for Apple Music and related services. If Apple reports an outage, wait and try again later. A green status does not rule out a new, intermittent, or regional problem.
- Try Apple Music with Wi-Fi turned off and cellular data on, or connect to another Wi-Fi network or a personal hotspot.
- If possible, test Apple Music on another device using the same Wi-Fi, and check whether other Apple apps such as the App Store also fail.

If downloaded tracks play but streaming does not, local playback is working while catalog access or connectivity may not be. That points toward a connection, service, or content-availability issue; it does not prove which one.

Fix Apple Music on iPhone or iPad
1. Check cellular access and try another connection
Turn Wi-Fi off temporarily and test Apple Music over cellular. Make sure cellular data is enabled for the device and for Music under Settings → Cellular (the label may be Mobile Data in some regions or versions). If cellular works but home Wi-Fi does not, focus on the home network rather than reinstalling the app.
2. Reopen Music, then restart the device
Close Music from the app switcher, reopen it, and retry the same item. If that does not help, restart the iPhone or iPad. These are low-risk ways to clear a temporary app or network state, though they are not guaranteed fixes.
3. Check VPNs, security apps, filters, and profiles
VPNs, firewalls, antivirus tools, ad or content blockers, parental controls, DNS-filtering apps, and configuration profiles can prevent Apple services from connecting. Temporarily disable or remove a relevant third-party tool to test, then restart the device and try Music again. Apple notes that simply switching off an app may not be a complete test if its network profile remains installed; see Apple’s guidance on software that can affect connectivity.

Search Settings for terms such as VPN, profile, filter, or firewall. Do not remove a school- or work-managed profile without the administrator’s approval. If a privacy-routing feature such as iCloud Private Relay is in use, temporarily testing without it may help isolate the connection path.
4. Verify date and time, then update iOS or iPadOS
Go to Settings → General → Date & Time, enable Set Automatically if available, and check the time zone. Then check Settings → General → Software Update and install an available update. Restart and test again.
5. Restore Wi-Fi DNS to automatic
If you or an administrator previously set custom DNS, try restoring the network’s normal setting: Settings → Wi-Fi → information button next to the connected network → Configure DNS → Automatic. Labels can vary by software version and language. Automatic DNS is a sensible first test; avoid entering random server addresses or overriding a managed network policy.

Manual public DNS can sometimes help if the current DNS service is malfunctioning, but it is not an Apple-guaranteed fix and may conflict with local filtering or network services. Apple Support Community users have reported resolving Apple-services issues with Google Public DNS addresses 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4, but that is anecdotal, not proof that those addresses will fix this error (community discussion). If you experiment, record the original setting and restore it if there is no improvement.

6. Forget and rejoin the Wi-Fi network
Go to Settings → Wi-Fi → information button → Forget This Network, then reconnect and enter the Wi-Fi password. This removes the saved credentials for that network, but is less disruptive than resetting all network settings.
7. Reset network settings only as a later step
If the error persists across networks after the checks above, go to Settings → General → Transfer or Reset iPhone/iPad → Reset → Reset Network Settings. This does not erase photos, apps, messages, or other personal files, but it removes saved Wi-Fi networks and passwords and resets cellular, VPN, and APN-related network settings. Make sure you can reconnect to Wi-Fi and restore any required configuration first. Apple advises checking with an administrator before doing this on a managed device (Apple’s network-reset guidance).

Fix Apple Music on Mac
- Try another network: connect to a phone hotspot or different Wi-Fi. If Music works there, investigate the original router, DNS, ISP, VPN, or filtering.
- Restart the Mac and router: if other devices also fail on the same Wi-Fi, the router or internet connection is a stronger suspect.
- Check VPN and network-monitoring software: review System Settings → VPN and System Settings → Network, along with installed firewall, antivirus, filtering, and traffic-monitoring tools. On managed Macs, review System Settings → General → Device Management with your administrator. Login items and extensions may be listed under System Settings → General → Login Items & Extensions.
- Check the clock: open Apple menu → System Settings → General → Date & Time and enable automatic time where appropriate.
- Use Wi-Fi diagnostics: check any Wi-Fi Recommendations available, or hold Option while clicking the Wi-Fi menu and choose Open Wireless Diagnostics. Apple’s Mac Wi-Fi troubleshooting guide covers these checks, updates, router restarts, and testing another network.
- Review DNS if the evidence points to it: on current macOS versions, go to Apple menu → System Settings → Network → Wi-Fi → Details → DNS. Older versions use System Preferences → Network → Wi-Fi → Advanced → DNS. Remove stale custom entries or restore the router-provided settings before trying a public resolver.
If only one song or album fails
Try another track, search for the item again instead of opening an old library link, and test the same item on another device. If the item alone continues to fail, it may involve catalog availability, licensing, regional restrictions, cached information, or a content-server problem. A single failing item is not a good reason to reset network settings or erase your library.

- Apple reports an outage: wait and retry later; local resets will not repair an Apple-side interruption.
- Music works on another network: contact the ISP or network administrator, especially if router-level DNS filtering, parental controls, or firewall rules are enabled.
- A managed device or network is involved: ask the organization’s administrator before removing profiles, changing DNS, or resetting settings.
- The error persists on multiple networks after updates and network checks: contact Apple Support and report which networks, devices, Apple services, and specific tracks you tested.
Do not start by deleting Apple Music, signing out of your Apple Account, or changing your subscription. Those steps do not address the most likely causes of a hostname or network-resolution failure.

Will resetting network settings delete my Apple Music library or downloaded songs?
It does not erase personal files or apps, but it removes saved Wi-Fi networks and passwords and resets cellular, VPN, and APN-related network settings. Avoid doing it until you have tried less disruptive checks.

Should I change DNS to Google or Cloudflare to fix this?
Not as a first step. Restore DNS to automatic if it was changed, and test another network. A public resolver is an optional, reversible diagnostic—not an Apple-guaranteed remedy—and may conflict with filtering or managed-network settings.
Why do websites work when Apple Music does not?
A network can allow ordinary browsing while Apple-specific services are blocked or fail to resolve. Test another Apple app and another network, then check VPNs, filters, router rules, and DNS.
