Roku activation is free. It connects your player or Roku TV to the internet and links it to a Roku account; an activation failure can therefore come from Wi‑Fi, the email process, account linking, the device’s setup state, or a fraudulent website. Start with the low-risk checks below before resetting anything.
Use Roku’s current setup guidance at Roku’s activation guide and its activation troubleshooting page. Roku does not charge an activation fee or a fee to create an account.
First, identify which activation problem you have
“Activation error” is not one universal Roku message. It may mean that the device cannot reach the internet, an activation email never arrived, a link expired, a QR code will not scan, the TV is stuck on the setup screen, the Streaming Store says the device is not linked, or a previously owned Roku is still associated with another person’s account.
Activation needs both an internet connection and a Roku-account link. The quickest diagnosis is to note the exact screen, then work through this order:

- Confirm Wi‑Fi and internet access.
- Check and resend the activation email.
- Use the newest email or the QR-code/manual option.
- Keep the TV on the activation screen.
- Restart the Roku.
- Test another network if necessary.
- Relink the account or choose Get Started.
- Factory-reset only after recording your credentials and understanding what will be erased.
What you need before starting
- The Roku player connected to the correct HDMI input, or the Roku TV powered on.
- A working internet connection, plus the Wi‑Fi name and password.
- The Roku remote (the Roku mobile app may help after the device is reachable).
- A phone or computer with access to the email inbox used for Roku.
- Your Roku account email and password, if you already have an account.
During setup, Roku may install a software update. Let it finish; do not unplug the device while an update is in progress. Menu names and available options vary by Roku model, TV manufacturer, country and Roku OS version.
Complete the normal activation process
- Turn on the TV and select the HDMI input used by a separate Roku player.
- Follow the on-screen setup prompts and choose Set up for home use.
- Choose Set up new wireless connection when using Wi‑Fi.
- Select your network and enter its password carefully.
- Allow any software update to complete.
- Enter the email address requested on the Roku screen.
- On your phone or computer, open the Roku email and select Activate Device.
- Sign in to an existing Roku account or create one.
- Leave the television on the activation screen until setup finishes and the Roku home screen appears.
On compatible setup screens, you can instead open your phone’s camera, scan the displayed QR code and tap its link. A QR scan is not mandatory when Roku offers email, a manual code, or another on-screen option.
If the activation email never arrives
- Wait several minutes, then search the inbox for Roku.
- Check spam, junk, promotions and any filtered folders.
- Compare the address on the TV with the intended address. One missing character, extra character or misplaced punctuation prevents delivery.
- Press Back on the Roku to re-enter the address. On supported screens, press Star (*) and select Resend activation link or Edit Roku email.
- If delivery still fails, try another email address, taking care not to create or use the wrong Roku account.
Email addresses are not case-sensitive, but their characters and punctuation must be exact. Roku’s troubleshooting instructions are at this official support page.
If the activation link has expired
Roku says an activation link expires after approximately 15–20 minutes. Return to the setup screen, press Star (*) if that option is shown, choose Resend activation link, and open the newest message promptly. Do not keep clicking an older email after requesting a replacement.

- 4K picture quality: With Roku Streaming Stick Plus, watch your favorites with brilliant 4K picture and vivid HDR color.
- Compact without compromises: Our sleek design won’t block neighboring HDMI ports, and it even powers from your TV alone, plugging into the back and staying out of sight. No wall outlet, no extra cords, no clutter.
- No more juggling remotes: Power up your TV, adjust the volume, and control your Roku device with one remote. Use your voice to quickly search, play entertainment, and more.
- Shows on the go: Take your TV to-go when traveling—without needing to log into someone else’s device.
If the QR code will not scan
- Move the phone closer to or farther from the screen.
- Clean the screen and tilt the phone to reduce glare.
- Increase the phone’s screen brightness.
- Use Roku’s email, manual-code or continue option if it is offered.
Scanning a photograph of a QR code on another screen is less reliable than scanning the code directly from the Roku setup display.
If Roku is stuck after you enter the email
Keep the TV on the activation screen while completing the browser or QR-code steps. If the screen timed out or returned to an earlier stage, press Star (*) where available, choose Edit Roku email or Resend activation link, re-enter the address and use the newest message. If the screen is unresponsive, restart the device before attempting setup again.
Fix network-related activation errors
Correct Wi‑Fi credentials do not guarantee internet access. Confirm that another device can browse the internet, recheck the password, restart the modem or router, and temporarily move the Roku closer to the router. If you recently changed providers, replaced the router or moved home, reconnect the Roku to the new network instead of relying on its saved configuration.
Use another network as a diagnostic test
Try a phone hotspot or another known-good network if available. A hotspot can consume mobile data and may be restricted by your carrier, so treat it as a test rather than a permanent solution. If activation works on the hotspot but not on home Wi‑Fi, investigate the router, DNS settings, filtering, captive-portal login or network compatibility instead of repeatedly resetting the Roku.

Hotel, dormitory, hospital, office and public networks may require a browser sign-in that a Roku setup screen cannot display normally. Managed or enterprise networks may also block device traffic. A Roku that connects to Wi‑Fi but cannot reach Roku’s servers has a service-path or network problem, not necessarily a wrong password.
If the Streaming Store says the device is not linked
Network access and account linking are separate. If the Streaming Store presents Get Started, select it and complete activation for the correct Roku account. This relinks the device without immediately erasing your apps and settings. Roku’s network and store guidance is available at Why can’t I open the Streaming Store?
Restart Roku before factory-resetting it
A restart is reversible and does not erase the account link, channels or preferences.
- Press Home.
- Open Settings.
- Choose System.
- Choose Power, if that submenu appears.
- Select System restart.
Some devices do not show a Power submenu. Follow the restart option presented by that model. You can also unplug the Roku’s power cable, wait briefly, and reconnect it. A restart will not correct a mistyped email, expired link, account ownership problem or blocked network, and you should not unplug the device during a software update.

Used, gifted or previously owned Roku devices
Ask the previous owner to remove the device from their Roku account before setup, if possible. If the Roku still belongs to someone else’s account, Roku says setup may require that person’s email and password. A factory reset does not bypass account ownership. Do not pay anyone claiming to “unlock” or “activate” the device.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Factory reset: use it only as a last resort
A factory reset may clear persistent setup or linking state, but it is destructive. It erases preferences, installed apps, account information and the current account association, then starts Guided Setup again. Before doing it, recover your Roku account credentials, Wi‑Fi details, streaming-service passwords and parental-control PIN if applicable.
On-screen reset
- Press Home.
- Open Settings.
- Choose System.
- Choose Advanced system settings.
- Select Factory reset.
- On a Roku TV, choose Factory reset everything.
- Follow the confirmation instructions.
See Roku’s model-specific instructions at Factory reset your Roku TV, player, or projector.
Physical reset on a player or projector
With the device powered on, locate the physical Reset button on its back or bottom. Hold it for about 10 seconds and release it when the status LED blinks rapidly. The location and appearance differ by model.

Physical reset on a Roku TV
Roku TV combinations are series- and model-dependent. Roku’s current guidance includes Power + Find My Remote for 12 seconds on Pro Series models; some Plus Series televisions use a pinhole button, while newer models may use Power + Find My Remote. Select Series models use a Reset button where present or that button combination where no Reset button exists. Confirm the exact model’s instructions before holding any buttons.
Recovery Mode
Recovery Mode reinstalls the Roku TV operating system and is more invasive than an ordinary reset. Reserve it for cases where restart, network checks, account relinking and the model-specific factory reset have failed.
Recognize activation scams
Roku activation and account creation are free. A page, caller or pop-up demanding an “activation fee,” remote-access payment, gift cards or payment-card details is a red flag. Navigate from Roku Support or Roku’s official website rather than trusting search ads, pop-ups, unofficial phone numbers or domains that merely contain the word “Roku.” Never disclose your Roku password to an unsolicited contact.
When to contact Roku support or consider replacement
Use official Roku support when current activation links repeatedly fail, the device cannot stay responsive long enough to finish setup, it cannot activate on a known-good network, physical reset and recovery procedures fail, or a former owner cannot be contacted. Activation alone does not prove defective hardware.
If replacement is justified after those checks, compare current models on Roku’s official streaming-device page. An HD Streaming Stick suits a compatible HD television; Streaming Stick Plus and Streaming Stick 4K target 4K displays with different HDR and wireless capabilities; Roku Ultra adds features such as Ethernet, USB, Wi‑Fi 6, Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos; Streambar SE combines streaming with a soundbar. Choose based on the television and network—not as a cure for an email or account problem. Roku devices have no monthly equipment fee, although individual apps may require separate subscriptions or other payments.
