If Max—or HBO Max during the 2026 name transition—will not open, freezes, buffers, shows a black screen, or rejects your sign-in on Apple TV, follow the fixes in this order: force-quit the app, restart Apple TV, update the app and tvOS, restart your network, sign out and back in, then reinstall Max. This sequence starts with low-risk fixes and helps separate an app problem from a network, account, compatibility, HDMI, or service problem.
Max says its supported Apple TV devices are Apple TV HD and Apple TV 4K running tvOS 15 or later. Its support pages also indicate that the service is becoming HBO Max during summer 2026, so the icon and app name may differ by device and timing. Confirm the name shown on your Apple TV before following App Store instructions.
Try these six fixes first
- Force-quit Max and reopen it.
- Restart Apple TV from Settings > System > Restart.
- Update Max in the App Store and update tvOS.
- Restart the modem and router.
- Sign out of Max and sign in again.
- Delete and reinstall Max.
Before deleting anything, write down the exact error message or code. Max asks for that information when you request support.
Check Apple TV compatibility before deeper troubleshooting
Max lists Apple TV HD and Apple TV 4K with tvOS 15 or later as supported: Max supported devices. Check your model and software in Settings > General > About. Menu wording can vary slightly by tvOS release.
#1 Best Overall
- 4K High Dynamic Range (Dolby Vision and HDR10) for stunning picture quality
- Dolby Digital Plus 7.1 surround sound
- A10X Fusion chip for ultra-fast graphics and performance
- Voice search by asking the Siri Remote
If the Apple TV cannot update to tvOS 15 or later, troubleshooting may not restore compatibility. Use Max on another supported device you already own or replace the Apple TV only after confirming that compatibility—not your account, network, or HDMI chain—is the cause.
Force-quit and reopen Max
- Press the Apple TV remote’s TV button twice quickly.
- Swipe left or right to highlight Max (or HBO Max).
- Swipe up to close it.
- Open the app again from the Home screen.
Max recommends quitting open apps when playback is unstable because they can consume available resources. Force-quitting helps a frozen app, but it cannot correct an outage, an unsupported Apple TV, a failed internet connection, or an account entitlement problem.
Update the Max app
- Open the App Store on Apple TV.
- Search for Max or HBO Max, matching the name currently displayed.
- Select Update if that button appears.
- Reopen the app and test playback.
If the App Store shows Open rather than Update, no manual update is currently available for that installation. Max’s Apple TV instructions are documented at Max Apple TV troubleshooting.
Update tvOS
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select Software Updates.
- Select Update Software.
- Choose Download and Install if offered.
Keep Apple TV connected to power during the update. Automatic updates are under Settings > System > Software Updates > Automatically Update. Apple’s instructions are at Apple TV software updates.
If the screen says “Preparing Update” or “Applying Update,” Apple says to allow more time; contact Apple Support if it has been more than an hour before unplugging the device. If Apple TV is stuck below an Apple logo with no explanatory text for more than an hour, Apple describes restarting by disconnecting and reconnecting power as an option.
Restart Apple TV
For a normal restart, use Settings > System > Restart. If Apple TV is completely unresponsive, disconnect power, wait briefly, reconnect it, and let it boot fully before opening Max. Do not force a power cycle as your first response while tvOS is installing an update.

Restart the modem and router
- Unplug the modem and router.
- Wait 30 seconds.
- Reconnect the modem first.
- Wait for internet service to return; Max says this can take about one minute.
- Reconnect the router and wait for Wi-Fi or Ethernet.
- Restart Apple TV and test Max.
Apple also recommends restarting Apple TV, the router, and modem for network problems: Apple network troubleshooting.
Test speed and network stability
Max’s stated guidance is 5 Mbps minimum for HD and 50+ Mbps recommended for 4K. These are connection guidelines, not guarantees: Wi-Fi interference, congestion, packet loss, router faults, and other devices using bandwidth can still cause buffering. See Max buffering and connection guidance.
- Pause downloads, game updates, video calls, and other streams.
- Test another streaming service.
- Try Max on a phone, tablet, or computer using the same network.
- Compare Wi-Fi and Ethernet if your Apple TV has an Ethernet port.
If every service buffers, suspect the home network or ISP. If Max fails on several devices, suspect the account, provider entitlement, network, or a wider Max problem. If Max works elsewhere but not on Apple TV, focus on the Apple TV app, tvOS, HDMI path, or Apple TV’s network connection.
Try Ethernet when available
Connect an Apple TV with a built-in Ethernet port directly to the router, reopen Max, and compare playback. Apple says Apple TV automatically uses Ethernet when connected and describes wired networking as a reliability option. Not every Apple TV model has an Ethernet port; do not assume an adapter works with every model.
Sign out and sign back in
- Open Max and select the Settings icon.
- Select Sign Out.
- Restart Apple TV through Settings > System > Restart.
- Open Max and sign in again.
This refreshes an expired authentication session and can clear stale provider or entitlement data. Have your password, email, phone, or provider login available before signing out.
Delete and reinstall Max
- From the Home screen, highlight Max.
- Press and hold the remote’s center or clickpad area for about two seconds. Max’s older wording calls this the Touch surface.
- Press Play/Pause.
- Select Delete.
- Open the App Store and search for Max or HBO Max.
- Select Install, open the app, and sign in.
Reinstalling removes the local app installation; it does not normally cancel your subscription. It may remove local settings and require another sign-in. If the app is unavailable after deletion, recheck the Apple TV model, tvOS version, and region.

|---|---|---|
| Max will not open | App or tvOS | Force-quit, update, restart |
| Max crashes to Home | Corrupt app or unsupported software | Update, reinstall, verify tvOS |
| All apps buffer | Home network or ISP | Test speed, restart network, try Ethernet |
| Only Max buffers | App, account, title, or service | Try another title and device |
| Max works on phone but not Apple TV | Apple TV app, tvOS, HDMI, or Apple TV network path | Update, reinstall, test Ethernet |
| Max fails everywhere | Account, provider, network, or outage | Check billing and other devices |
| Only 4K fails | Bandwidth, HDMI, HDCP, HDR, or plan capability | Test HD and direct HDMI |

| Repeated sign-in requests | Wrong account or provider entitlement | Identify who bills you |
| Audio but no picture | HDMI/display handshake or playback error | Bypass receiver or switch |
Fix specific playback and error problems
Frozen logo, loading screen, or repeated crashes
Force-quit the app, update Max and tvOS, restart Apple TV, then reinstall Max. If other apps also fail, investigate tvOS or the device rather than repeatedly reinstalling Max.
“Something went wrong”
Update Max, update tvOS, sign out, restart Apple TV, reinstall the app, and test another supported device. Keep the displayed code and follow Max’s error guidance when contacting support.
Black screen or audio without video
Restart Max and Apple TV, try another title and another service, check HDMI connections, bypass an AV receiver or HDMI switch, try another HDMI input, and compare HD with 4K/HDR/Dolby Vision content. A black screen is not automatically an HDCP fault; it can also involve the app, title, display handshake, or tvOS.
“There’s a problem with your device setup” or 4K failure
Max says 4K setups require HDCP 2.2-compliant components: device-setup guidance. Connect Apple TV directly to the television, remove a splitter, switch, receiver, or adapter temporarily, try another HDMI input and known-good cable, test HD content, and restore components one at a time. Treat a different cable as a diagnostic test, not a guaranteed purchase.

Use the same email associated with the subscription and identify who bills you: Max, Apple, a cable company, or another distributor. Do not repeatedly create new accounts, which can create duplicate subscriptions. Max’s billing guidance is at Max plans and billing providers.
The Max app is separate from Apple’s Apple TV app. Seeing a program in Apple’s app does not prove that you have access to the separate Max service; Apple says an Apple TV subscription does not automatically include third-party subscription services: Apple subscription guidance. Contact the company that actually bills you for payment or entitlement issues.

Max works on Wi-Fi but not Ethernet (or the reverse)
Restart the relevant network equipment, check the cable and router port, and test another service on the same connection. A difference between Wi-Fi and Ethernet points to a network path problem rather than proof that the Max account is defective.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Check for a wider Max problem without guessing
Try Max on another device with the same account and network, then check the official Max help center or support channels. User reports can be a secondary signal, but do not treat them as confirmation. If many devices fail simultaneously, wait and retry rather than repeatedly reinstalling. Do not label the service “down” without a current, dated status source.
When to contact support
Contact Max
- Max alone fails after updates, restart, sign-out, and reinstall.
- You have an error code, playback error, or missing entitlement.
- The account works nowhere or only one title consistently fails.
Contact Apple
- tvOS will not update, Apple TV repeatedly crashes, or the remote or hardware is failing.
- The problem persists across apps or involves HDMI, display, or device setup.
Contact the billing provider
- Payment, cancellation, duplicate billing, or subscription entitlement is wrong.
- You subscribed through Apple, a cable provider, or another distributor rather than directly through Max.
Give support your Apple TV model, tvOS version, Max app version if visible, exact error code, connection type, whether other apps work, whether Max works on another device, and whether every title or only one fails.
Do not factory-reset Apple TV as a first step
A restart preserves apps and settings. Deleting and reinstalling Max replaces only that app and normally requires another sign-in. A factory reset erases Apple TV settings and creates substantial setup work. Max’s official troubleshooting sequence does not require a factory reset, so reserve it for Apple-directed hardware or system troubleshooting after less disruptive steps fail.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Max still work on Apple TV?
Yes, Max lists Apple TV HD and Apple TV 4K running tvOS 15 or later as supported. The visible app name may be Max or HBO Max during the 2026 branding transition.
Will deleting Max cancel my subscription?
No. Deleting the app removes the local installation; it normally does not cancel billing, though you will need to sign in again after reinstalling.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Do I need an Apple TV subscription to use Max?
No. The Max app is separate from Apple’s Apple TV app, and a subscription billed through Apple or another provider must be managed with the company that bills it.
The Bottom Line
Most Apple TV Max failures resolve with an app or tvOS update, a restart, a network restart, a fresh sign-in, or a reinstall. If Max works on another device, concentrate on Apple TV compatibility, HDMI, tvOS, or the Apple TV network path; if it fails everywhere, investigate the account, billing provider, network, or a wider service issue before buying hardware or resetting Apple TV.
