Start the episode and open the player’s gear icon → Subtitles/CC menu. Select your language, confirm you are watching the subtitled version rather than a dub without captions, then disable any VPN, proxy, ad blocker, or browser extension and reload in a Private or Incognito window. If the same episode lacks subtitles on every device, the track may be unavailable, region-restricted, or defective rather than a setting you can repair.
Fix Crunchyroll subtitles in the fastest order
- Play the episode and select the gear icon in the video player.
- Open Subtitles/CC and choose the required language. If the menu labels differ, look for the gear icon and a subtitle or CC control.
- Check that you selected the subtitled version, not an English-dubbed episode that has no English caption track.
- Turn off VPN and proxy connections temporarily. Also disable ad blockers, privacy or script-blocking tools, pop-up blockers, and video-enhancement extensions.
- Reload the episode in an Incognito or Private window.
- Try another supported browser, then test the same episode on another supported device.
- Only after those tests, clear site or app cache, update software, reinstall the app, restart your router, or consider DNS changes.
This order separates a wrong setting or unavailable track from a local browser, app, device, or network problem before you erase data or change network configuration. Crunchyroll’s web troubleshooting guidance covers these checks at its subtitle troubleshooting page.
First check whether subtitles should exist
Choose the subtitle language during playback
On the website, you can set a default language through avatar → Settings → Preferences → Subtitle/CC Language. On mobile, open your avatar or app settings and choose Subtitle/CC Language. Exact labels can vary by app version and device. Crunchyroll documents the current controls in its subtitle-language guide.
Subtitles and captions are not identical
Subtitles usually translate spoken dialogue from the original audio. Closed captions may also identify relevant sounds. An English-dubbed episode does not necessarily include English captions; some dubs offer an English CC track, but it is not universal. Switch to the original-audio, subtitled version or select English CC if that option is actually listed.

Language rights vary by country
Crunchyroll licenses shows and subtitle tracks by region. A language missing from the menu may therefore be unavailable in your country rather than broken. Test another episode in the same series and another title. Do not use a VPN to work around licensing: Crunchyroll says VPN use is unsupported and can cause playback, login, and feature problems. Web-browser fixes
Use a clean session
Open the episode in Incognito or Private mode. If subtitles appear there, an extension or stale site data is the likely cause. Re-enable extensions one at a time to identify the conflict, or whitelist Crunchyroll instead of permanently removing an ad blocker.
Update or change the browser
On the supported-devices page reviewed on August 18, 2026, Crunchyroll lists Chrome 123+, Firefox 123+, Edge 123+, and Safari 17.1+. These baselines can change. Update your browser, close and reopen it, and test another supported browser. If only one browser fails, record its name and version for Support. Clear Crunchyroll site data
Clear Crunchyroll’s cached files and cookies, restart the browser, sign in again, and replay the episode. Clearing cookies can sign you out and remove site preferences, so do it after the low-risk tests.
Mobile-app recovery
- Force-close Crunchyroll and open it again.
- Update the app from the official app store.
- Update the phone or tablet operating system.
- Clear the app cache where your operating system provides that control. On Android, the usual path is Settings → Apps → Crunchyroll → Storage → Clear cache.
- Restart the device and test the same episode on Wi-Fi and mobile data.
- Reinstall Crunchyroll from the official store if the problem continues, then sign in and test again.
Use Clear data only when necessary: it can remove local settings and sign you out. Crunchyroll’s general loading guidance covers cache, reinstall, and connection recovery at this support article.
Smart-TV and streaming-device fixes
LG webOS
Crunchyroll’s specific LG sequence is:
- Restart the Wi-Fi connection.
- Clear the Crunchyroll cache: Settings → Apps → Crunchyroll App → Clear cache.
- Restart the TV and check its network connection.
- Move the TV closer to the router or use Ethernet if possible.
- Reinstall Crunchyroll from the LG Content Store.
- Update LG software. On webOS 6.0+, use All Settings → Support → Software Update → Check for updates. On webOS 5.0 or earlier, use Gear icon → All Settings → Customer Support → Software Update → Check for updates.
For an LG-specific connectivity reset, Crunchyroll instructs users to unplug the Wi-Fi router for approximately 1–2 minutes before reconnecting it. The subtitle instructions are at Crunchyroll’s web subtitle article.

Other TVs, consoles, and streaming players
Samsung, Roku, Apple TV, Android TV, Fire TV, PlayStation, Xbox, and casting interfaces use different menus. Restart the app and device, update the app and firmware, clear cache if the platform offers that control, and reinstall from the official store. Then compare the same episode on a phone or computer; do not assume LG menu paths apply to another platform.
On the supported-devices page dated August 18, 2026, Crunchyroll lists these minimums: Android 8, iOS 17, Windows 10, Android TV/Google TV 5.1, Roku 11.0.0 b1, Samsung Tizen 3, LG webOS 4, Apple TV tvOS 17, Fire OS 6, Xbox 10.0.17763.0, PS4 10.008, PS5 6.00.00.00, and Chromecast 1.36.x (1.56.x recommended). Network resets and DNS: later options
Restart the router
For a general connectivity reset, unplug the router, wait about 10 seconds, reconnect it, wait for service to return, and reopen Crunchyroll. If subtitles work on mobile data but not home Wi-Fi, compare another device on the same network and consider filtering, DNS, or router issues. Change DNS only when the symptom suggests a network problem
DNS cannot create a subtitle track that Crunchyroll does not provide. If multiple devices have connectivity trouble, Crunchyroll documents Cloudflare (1.1.1.1, 1.0.0.1) and Google (8.8.8.8, 8.8.4.4) as public DNS options. Android Private DNS hostnames are one.one.one.one and dns.google. Record your original settings, save the change, and restart the device. Menu paths differ by platform.
When to contact Crunchyroll Support
Contact Support when the same title and episode fail on multiple devices, a subtitle language is unexpectedly absent, or the problem remains after browser/app and network tests. Include:
- Series and season/episode
- Requested subtitle language
- Country or region
- Device and platform
- App version, or browser name and version
- Exactly what happens (missing menu, blank text, overlap, or error)
- Whether the episode works on another device or network
- Error code and screenshot, if available

Do not keep changing local settings when only one episode fails everywhere; reporting the reproducible episode gives Crunchyroll the information needed to check its subtitle delivery.
The Bottom Line
Set the language from gear icon → Subtitles/CC, verify the episode and region, disable VPNs and extensions, and test a clean browser or another device. Then clear cache, update, and reinstall as appropriate. A subtitle track missing on every device for one episode should be reported, not repeatedly “fixed” with local resets.
