If an FFmpeg process is still running but your YouTube Live picture has stopped moving, first find where the freeze begins: in the source file, FFmpeg’s local output, or YouTube’s preview. That distinction determines the fix. A healthy local output points toward the outbound connection or YouTube ingestion; a frozen local output points back to the file, processing chain, or machine load.
Find the stage where the picture freezes
Compare the same moment in three places: the original video, FFmpeg’s output or a local archive if you record one, and YouTube’s Live Control Room preview. YouTube recommends checking the encoder output, looking for encoder errors and CPU load, and inspecting the local archive. If the local output looks right but YouTube does not, investigate the outbound connection and YouTube’s ingestion status. If the local output is also frozen, start with the source, decoding, filters, encoding, and system load. YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guide outlines these checks.
- Source file is frozen: Inspect the media itself at the affected timestamp. A damaged or static section cannot be repaired by reconnecting to YouTube.
- Source moves but local FFmpeg output freezes: Check FFmpeg’s log for demux, decode, filter, or encode errors, and see whether processing speed or CPU load falls behind real time.
- Local output moves but YouTube freezes: Check upload stability, FFmpeg output errors, Live Control Room warnings, and the selected ingestion settings.
YouTube advises checking the preview before going live and monitoring audio and video quality during the stream. A local archive that continues growing is useful evidence, but growth alone does not prove that its video frames are changing; inspect the actual picture and FFmpeg log as well. YouTube’s live-streaming tips cover preview and archive checks.
Confirm FFmpeg is looping and pacing the file
For an input file, FFmpeg documents -stream_loop -1 for infinite looping. It is an input option, so place it before the corresponding -i. The -re option reads the input at its native rate and is useful when sending a file as a real-time stream. FFmpeg’s documentation describes both options.

'rtmp://YOUR_YOUTUBE_INGEST_URL/YOUR_STREAM_KEY'
This is an illustrative pattern, not a tested or complete production command. Replace the URL and key with the current values shown in YouTube Live Control Room, and adapt codecs, stream mapping, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and audio options to the source and YouTube’s selected settings. Treat the stream key like a password: do not publish it in commands, logs, screenshots, or support requests.
If the freeze happens at the loop boundary
Note whether the picture stops at the same point every time the file restarts. If it does, inspect the file and FFmpeg log for timestamp discontinuities, demux or decode errors, and problems with copied-stream timestamps. The loop option establishes that the input repeats; it does not guarantee seamless timestamps or repair unsuitable media. Re-encoding may be necessary for a source with incompatible timestamps or stream properties, but verify the behavior with the actual file and installed FFmpeg build before changing the pipeline.

Check YouTube’s ingestion settings and warnings
In Live Control Room, review any error messages and compare the incoming stream with the selected settings. YouTube’s guidance flags codec settings, progressive video, frame-rate limits, resolution, and keyframe frequency as areas to validate. YouTube targets a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds; at 30 fps, two seconds is 60 frames. The interval is a duration, so calculate the corresponding frame count for your chosen frame rate. YouTube also recommends constant bitrate (CBR) encoding. See YouTube’s encoder settings and its live-stream error guidance.
A frozen picture by itself does not prove that the GOP or keyframe interval is wrong. Use dashboard warnings and your actual FFmpeg settings to identify a mismatch before changing them.

Separate CPU and network problems
Check FFmpeg’s log and system load while the freeze occurs. If the local output falls behind or shows encoding errors, reduce avoidable processing load or test another encoder after confirming the source is sound. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance also recommends testing outbound internet speed; a fast download result does not establish that upload capacity is stable enough for the configured stream. If the connection test indicates a problem, YouTube advises contacting the internet provider. Follow the troubleshooting steps here.
When output recovery can help
If FFmpeg reports write failures or a temporary connection drop, the FFmpeg FIFO muxer has optional recovery behavior, including attempt_recovery; its documentation includes an RTMP example. Match options to your installed FFmpeg version and validate any configuration change. Recovery may help resume output after a temporary network failure, but it cannot make a stalled input advance, fix persistent network trouble, or correct invalid ingestion settings. See FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer documentation.

Verify the stream URL and key only if connection setup points there
A stream that is rejected or sent to the wrong endpoint is different from a valid stream whose picture later freezes. If FFmpeg cannot connect or the broadcast fails to start, compare the encoder’s RTMP URL and stream key with the current values in YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube’s setup instructions explain where to enter them. Do not expose the key while asking for help.
Use the symptom pattern to narrow the cause
| What you observe | Where to investigate first |
|---|---|
| Freeze repeats at the same point in the loop | Source media, timestamps, and FFmpeg demux/decode logs. |
| Local output freezes too, with CPU or encoding errors | Machine load and the decode, filter, and encode chain. |
| Local output is healthy; YouTube preview is not | Outbound upload stability, FFmpeg write errors, ingestion warnings, and stream settings. |
| Intermittent connection or write failures | Network stability and, where appropriate, FFmpeg output recovery; recovery will not fix source or settings faults. |
| Connection fails before a valid stream appears | Current Live Control Room endpoint and key. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If the underlying goal is to keep uploaded video looping on YouTube without leaving an FFmpeg computer running, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The cloud keeps it running, so nothing has to stay on at home; it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. Any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps streams as made, at one flat price per slot. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. Start your free first day with StreamNeo.
