A black screen in an OBS YouTube Live loop can come from the local video source, OBS’s scene rendering, encoding performance, or YouTube ingest. Start by checking whether the OBS preview and a local recording are also black; that tells you whether to investigate playback locally or the outgoing stream. There is no single guaranteed fix without details such as your operating system, OBS version, video codec, and log.
First, identify where the screen is black
Look at the OBS preview, a local recording, and the YouTube player separately. Note whether audio continues and whether the problem changes after simplifying the scene. These observations distinguish an OBS source/rendering problem from an issue with the encoded stream or YouTube ingest.
- OBS preview and local recording are black: begin with the source, file, scene visibility, and local rendering checks below.
- OBS preview is visible, but the recording or YouTube player is black: investigate output and encoding settings, then check YouTube stream health.
- The video is visible but the stream lags or drops frames: investigate system load and outgoing-stream settings; those symptoms alone do not identify the cause of a black source.
Fix an OBS Media Source black screen
1. Confirm the source type and selected file
For a video file stored on your computer, use OBS’s Media Source or VLC Source. Confirm the intended file is selected, the source is present in the active scene, and it is visible rather than hidden. OBS’s performance guidance identifies these source types for local media playback: OBS encoding performance troubleshooting.
2. Test the file in a simple scene
Temporarily remove other demanding sources, filters, and animated overlays, then test the video in a minimal scene. Sources, filters, and complex scenes can consume system resources; simplifying them helps determine whether the scene workload is involved. If the video appears in the simple scene, restore elements one at a time to find what changes the result.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
3. Compare with a smaller video file
If your stream output is below 4K or the 4K source is scaled down, test a lower-resolution version of the same video. OBS notes that displaying 4K media may be unnecessary in those cases and recommends lower-resolution media as a way to reduce workload. This is a diagnostic comparison, not proof that resolution caused the black screen.
4. Separate local-file playback from desktop capture
If the video enters OBS through a browser or desktop capture rather than a local media source, test that capture path separately. Check whether the captured window or display is visible when other scenes and sources are removed. A failure in browser or desktop capture is not automatically a Media Source playback problem.

Check OBS and GPU performance
If OBS is lagging or reports overload, check whether other GPU-intensive applications are running and simplify the scene or disable costly filters as a test. On Windows, OBS’s quick troubleshooting step is to close OBS and reopen it using Run as administrator. If symptoms persist, reduce output resolution or frame rate temporarily and compare the result. These steps test performance pressure; they do not prove it caused a black preview.
Hardware encoding can move encoding work from the CPU to a specialized GPU component and may improve encoding performance. It is a separate question from whether a local Media Source can play and render correctly, so changing encoders is not a universal fix for a black source. See OBS hardware encoding guidance.

Check settings for the outgoing YouTube stream
Only investigate YouTube encoder settings as a cause when the local OBS preview is visible but the outgoing recording or stream is not right. YouTube’s live encoder guidance recommends H.264 at 42 Mbps for 4K/2160p at 30 fps and 50 Mbps for 4K/2160p at 60 fps. Match the bitrate recommendation to the actual output resolution and frame rate, and ensure your available upload bandwidth can support the stream with headroom. These are YouTube ingest recommendations, not local playback requirements or universal minimums. See YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
Test in advance with representative audio and motion, and monitor stream health while live. YouTube also states that “For 4K / 2160, the option to improve for low latency is not available.”

Gather useful evidence if the black screen remains
Before making more changes, record the details that distinguish playback from output problems:
- Operating system and version, OBS version, GPU model, and graphics driver.
- Video container and codec, source type, and whether the file’s audio plays.
- Whether the OBS preview, local recording, YouTube player, or all three are black.
- Whether a simple scene or lower-resolution test file changes the result.
- An OBS log for the affected session.
OBS’s help portal links to support material and forums. Include the evidence above when seeking help, since the symptom alone does not establish a specific cause.
