If your sermon’s audio plays but its picture is black in OBS, first check the active scene’s Media Source: confirm the correct local video is selected, the source is visible and not covered, and Loop is enabled. Then compare the OBS preview with the YouTube Live Control Room preview to find where the picture disappears. The cause is not always the same, so work through the checks below rather than assuming a particular setting will fix every case.
Find where the picture turns black
Check the image in three places: the video file in a media player, the OBS preview, and YouTube’s Live Control Room preview during a test or unlisted stream. These checks help distinguish a file playback problem, an OBS scene/source problem, and an issue that appears in the outgoing stream.
- The file is black outside OBS: investigate the file or its playback before changing OBS settings.
- The file plays outside OBS, but OBS is black: check the source, scene visibility, and layering.
- OBS shows the picture, but YouTube’s preview is black: check the outgoing stream in Live Control Room before starting for viewers.
Audio continuing while the image is black does not, by itself, identify the cause. OBS’s documentation does not establish one universal fix for this symptom.
Fix the Media Source for a single sermon video
OBS Media Source is the straightforward choice for one local video. OBS documents support for common formats including MP4, MOV, MKV, AVI, and WebM. See the OBS Media Sources guide.

When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0
- Select the active scene. In OBS, make sure you are working in the scene intended for the YouTube stream.
- Check the source list. Confirm the sermon video’s Media Source is present and visible. If it is hidden, enable its visibility.
- Check its position in the scene. An opaque source layered above the video can cover it. Move the sermon video above the covering source or hide the covering source if it should not appear.
- Open the Media Source properties. Verify that Local File points to the intended sermon recording, not a moved, renamed, or different file.
- Enable Loop. OBS documents Loop as off by default; turn it on if the video should restart when it finishes.
- Check Show nothing when playback ends. OBS documents this option as on by default. If playback reaches the end and the image disappears, check whether the video ended and adjust the setting or ensure Loop is enabled.
- Test playback in the preview. Restart the source if needed and confirm that the image appears before sending the stream to YouTube.
Use VLC Video for a playlist
For a playlist or media handling supported through VLC, OBS also offers the VLC Video source. It requires VLC to be installed. OBS notes that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. VLC Video includes a Loop Playlist option, on by default according to OBS’s documentation.
- Confirm VLC is installed and its architecture matches OBS.
- Check that the intended files are in the playlist.
- Verify Loop Playlist is enabled if the playlist should repeat.
Media Source and VLC Video are alternatives for different playback needs, not guaranteed black-screen remedies. Use Media Source for a single local file that works with it; consider VLC Video when you need playlist playback or VLC-supported media handling.

If the video plays but OBS output stutters or stalls
A black source and output struggling under load are different problems. OBS explains that it uses GPU resources to composite and render scenes; GPU overload or competing GPU-heavy programs can affect performance. If OBS is choppy or stalls, simplify the scene and reduce competing GPU work, then test again. These steps address performance pressure and are not a guaranteed fix for a black local source. See OBS’s encoding performance troubleshooting guide.
Check the YouTube preview before going live
Start a test or unlisted stream and inspect the preview in YouTube’s Live Control Room before making the sermon stream public. Confirm that both picture and sound are present, and continue monitoring them while streaming. YouTube recommends checking the Live Control Room preview and monitoring stream quality; it does not diagnose the underlying OBS source problem. See YouTube’s streaming tips.

Common symptoms and what to check
| Symptom | Checks |
|---|---|
| Audio plays, but the OBS preview is black | Confirm the correct local file, source visibility, scene layering, and playback in a normal media player. |
| The picture appears, then disappears at the end | Check whether playback ended, whether Loop is enabled, and the Show nothing when playback ends setting. |
| A playlist source is black or does not play as expected | Confirm VLC is installed, its architecture matches OBS, the playlist contains the intended media, and Loop Playlist is enabled if required. |
| The picture is visible in OBS but black in YouTube’s preview | Use a test or unlisted stream and inspect the Live Control Room preview before going public. |
| Playback or output is choppy or stalls | Reduce competing GPU-heavy work and simplify the OBS scene; GPU load is a performance consideration, not a universal explanation for a black source. |
