To livestream a podcast with a still cover image, create an encoder scene that shows the image while carrying the podcast audio, then connect the encoder to a YouTube Live event. Start the encoder, check the incoming preview in YouTube Studio, and use the event controls to go live.
Before you set up the stream
- Enable livestreaming early. YouTube says first-time live-stream enablement may take up to 24 hours, so check the channel before the planned broadcast. YouTube’s encoder-streaming guide explains the workflow.
- Choose visibility deliberately. Decide whether the event should be public, private, or unlisted, and verify the setting in YouTube Studio rather than relying on a default. YouTube notes that defaults can differ based on age.
- Prepare the audio and image. Use the podcast recording as the audio source and the cover as the visible video in your encoder. A microphone or hardware encoder is not inherently required for a prerecorded episode; equipment depends on how the audio is being captured.
Create or schedule a YouTube Live event
In YouTube Studio, open Go Live. Create an immediate stream if you are ready to broadcast, or use the Manage tab to schedule one. Scheduling is useful when you want an upcoming event viewers can share and set reminders for. Set its visibility and other event details before connecting your encoder. See YouTube’s live-streaming setup instructions and live-stream settings guide.
Build the still-image-and-audio scene
In your encoder software, make a scene with the cover image as the visible video and the podcast audio as the scene’s audio source. The image remains on screen while the audio plays. OBS documents local media sources in its Media Sources guide; exact image-source menu labels can vary, so use the image/source controls in your chosen encoder rather than assuming a specific menu path.
For an existing episode, select the recording as the audio source and check that it plays from the beginning and continues for the intended broadcast. For a live conversation, use the audio capture source appropriate to your setup. YouTube does not make a particular microphone, audio interface, or hardware encoder a universal requirement.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Connect the encoder and start the event
- Get the event connection details. In the YouTube Live event, locate its stream URL (server URL) and stream key.
- Enter them in the encoder. Use the encoder’s stream settings to enter the server URL and key associated with that event. YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Treat the key as a credential: do not share or publish it.
- Start the encoder output. Confirm that the cover image appears and the intended audio is arriving in the Live Control Room preview.
- Go live from the event controls. For the scheduled-stream workflow, YouTube instructs creators to click Go live after the preview appears. Check the controls for your selected event before broadcasting.
- End the broadcast cleanly. Stop the encoder feed and end the event as appropriate. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived.
YouTube’s guide to streaming with an encoder covers event connection and preview. The stream key can be reset in Live Control Room if you believe it has been exposed; update the encoder with the new key before starting again. See YouTube’s stream-settings guidance.
Choose between an immediate and scheduled stream
| Workflow | Best suited to | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Immediate stream | A broadcast you are ready to start now | Create the event, connect the encoder, check the preview, then start the event. |
| Scheduled stream | An episode you want to announce ahead of time | Create the event in Manage, share its upcoming page, and let viewers set reminders; start the encoder and go live when ready. |
Keep copyright and monetization in view
Only stream audio and images you have the rights or permission to use. A static cover does not change the need to clear music, clips, artwork, or other material in the episode for livestream use. Review YouTube’s current rules for your content and channel before broadcasting.

Live-stream monetization is not automatic for every channel. YouTube makes monetization features available to eligible YouTube Partner Program creators; its settings guidance discusses ads and Super Chat and notes that memberships are available to some channels. Check your channel’s eligibility and the controls shown for your event in YouTube’s live-stream settings guide.
Troubleshoot common problems
- No preview appears: Confirm the encoder is running and that the server URL and stream key match the YouTube event. Check the encoder’s connection status and wait for the Live Control Room to receive the feed.
- The wrong event receives the feed: Compare the encoder’s URL and key with the event you intend to use. Each event’s connection details must be entered into the encoder you are starting.
- The image is visible but there is no audio: Check that the podcast recording or live audio source is included in the scene and that playback is active. Verify the arriving audio in the preview before going live.
- The stream is public when it should not be: Recheck the event’s public, private, or unlisted setting before broadcasting; do not assume the channel default is appropriate.
- The stream key may be compromised: Reset it in Live Control Room and replace the old key in the encoder settings before sending a new feed.
- Livestreaming is not enabled in time: First-time enablement may take up to 24 hours, according to YouTube. Enable and verify access ahead of the event rather than waiting until broadcast time.
