If the source is a looping file, confirm it is on the VPS and playing. A black screen can originate at any of those points; the title alone does not identify one cause.
Locate where the video goes black
Compare what you see in OBS with what YouTube receives. This separates a missing or stalled source from an OBS scene/output problem and a downstream ingest problem.
| What you see | Where to investigate first |
|---|---|
| OBS Preview is black or frozen | Source visibility, file path, playback, or media-source settings. |
| Preview looks right, but Program is black | The selected scene and the transition to Program. |
| OBS Program looks right, but the YouTube player is black | Live Control Room messages, stream key, ingest, and encoder configuration. |
| The stream goes black after disconnecting from the VPS | Whether the stream survives the remote desktop session ending; behavior depends on the VPS operating system and session type. |
Vultr’s setup guides describe checking sources and transitioning a scene to Program before streaming. Vultr’s Ubuntu and OBS guide explains the Linux setup; Vultr’s Broadcaster guide covers its marketplace application.
Check OBS source, Preview, and Program
- In OBS, select the scene intended for the 24/7 stream. Confirm the relevant source is present and enabled.
- Check Preview. If it is black, fix the source or playback before adjusting YouTube bitrate.
- If Preview is correct, transition that scene to Program and check the Program output.
- Only after Program is correct, compare OBS output with YouTube Live Control Room.
If Preview is right but Program is not, focus on scene selection or transition. If both are right but YouTube is not, use the Control Room’s stream-health status and messages to guide the next check.

For a looping file, verify the media source
A file-based 24/7 stream depends on the video being available to OBS on the VPS and playing there. Vultr’s Broadcaster instructions say to upload source files to the server for this use.
- Check that the file exists on the server and that the media source points to its actual location.
- Confirm playback is visible in OBS Preview; check audio levels as well if the stream should include sound.
- Enable the media source’s Loop option if the file should replay automatically.
- If Preview is black or playback stalls, correct the path, source, or playback first. Encoder changes cannot restore a missing file.
Read YouTube and OBS diagnostics before changing encoder settings
Open YouTube Live Control Room and inspect stream health and its messages. YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the intended stream and monitoring stream health during the event. See YouTube’s encoder settings guidance.

If YouTube reports an encoder or receiving issue while OBS Program is correct, check that OBS is using the intended stream key and that its output settings match YouTube’s current guidance. Do not treat a stream key or bitrate change as the first fix when OBS Preview itself is black.

| Ingestion codec | Minimum bitrate | Recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| H.264 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| AV1 or H.265 | 2 Mbps | 6 Mbps |

Check CPU, encoding load, and dropped frames when diagnostics point there
Resource pressure is worth investigating when OBS reports rendering or encoding strain, frames are dropping, or YouTube reports a related issue. It is not proof of the cause merely because the screen is black.

Vultr’s 2025 Ubuntu streaming-server guide lists 2 vCPUs, 4 GB RAM, 80 GB storage, and 3 TB bandwidth as prerequisites for the setup it documents; these are not universal requirements for every streaming workflow. The guide recommends 720p (1280 × 720) for a server with at least two vCPUs and warns that higher resolution and frame rate require more processing. It advises monitoring OBS CPU, reducing resolution, or moving to a plan with more vCPUs if CPU is high and frames are dropping. Vultr specifically cautions that CPU use above 90% may lead to dropped frames and buffering; that is Vultr’s operational guidance, not a universal threshold or diagnosis.
Make one change at a time, then check Preview, Program, stream health, and frame statistics again. This makes it easier to tell whether lowering resolution or frame rate addressed a resource problem.

Test whether the stream survives a remote desktop disconnect
Vultr’s Ubuntu guide asks users to disconnect the Ubuntu desktop and verify that streaming remains active. If the picture disappears only after disconnecting, investigate how the VPS’s operating system and remote session handle that disconnect.
The same Vultr guide describes an RDP session-lock issue and a tscon workaround for its Windows Server setup. That remedy is specific to the Windows case; do not apply it to Linux. Identify the operating system and session type first, then use the matching Vultr instructions.
Troubleshoot by symptom
| Symptom | Likely area to inspect | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| OBS Preview is black | Source, file location, or playback | Confirm the source is enabled and the media file exists at the configured path; verify playback and Loop. |
| Preview works, Program is black | Scene selection or transition | Put the intended scene on Program. |
| OBS output is correct, YouTube is black | Receiving, stream key, ingest, or encoder configuration | Read Live Control Room messages and compare OBS output settings with YouTube guidance. |
| Black screen begins after remote disconnect | VPS session behavior | Test the disconnect deliberately and follow instructions for the identified OS and remote-session type. |
| Dropped frames or connection warnings | Network stability or configured bitrate | Use OBS’s connection troubleshooting guide; lowering bitrate is a diagnostic step when the connection cannot sustain it. |
| High CPU plus dropped frames | Encoding or rendering load | Test lower resolution or frame rate; consider more vCPUs only if measurements support a capacity problem. |
Dropped frames indicate that the connection to the remote server is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate, according to OBS. Lowering bitrate can help diagnose that connection symptom; it will not fix a missing or non-playing media source.
