To bring the stream back automatically, configure the actual encoder—such as FFmpeg—to start at boot under a Linux service manager such as systemd, then verify that it can read its media and configuration and reconnect to YouTube. YouTube’s auto-start setting does not launch a stopped encoder on your VPS.
Why a VPS reboot takes a YouTube stream offline
YouTube receives a live feed from an encoder: an application or tool that captures and compresses video, then sends it to YouTube using a Live server URL and stream key. When the VPS restarts, its running processes stop. Unless something starts the encoder again after boot, YouTube stops receiving that feed.
There are two separate recovery layers to check:
- Host and process recovery: a service manager starts or restarts the encoder when the operating system comes back.
- YouTube ingest recovery: the encoder has a working source, valid destination settings and network access, and successfully sends video to YouTube.
Fixing the first layer does not prove the second is healthy. YouTube explains that the encoder needs the Live server URL and stream key to send a feed in its encoder setup guide.
Diagnose what runs on the VPS
Before changing startup settings, identify the process that actually sends the video. It might be FFmpeg, OBS in a desktop session or another encoder. Use a service definition and restart policy suited to that specific process; configuring a service to run the wrong command will not restore the stream.

- Find the encoder command, configuration file and media source.
- Determine which Linux user runs the encoder and whether it depends on a graphical session or mounted storage.
- Note where the YouTube server URL and stream key are configured, without sharing or exposing the key.
Configure a Linux encoder to start after boot
Run the encoder as a system service
For a Linux software pipeline, use a boot-enabled service supervisor such as systemd to start the encoder after the VPS returns. The service needs the correct command, working directory, user and access to the media and configuration it uses. Exact unit settings depend on the encoder and host; do not paste an example unit blindly if its paths, user or command differ from yours.
A public FFmpeg project documents running an encoder under systemd, including a no-output progress timeout that can prompt a restart. Treat this as an implementation example, not an official YouTube requirement or a guarantee that every failure will be detected: FFmpeg under systemd example.

Enable, reboot and inspect
- Configure the system service to run the actual encoder command with the correct media source and YouTube destination settings.
- Enable the service to start at boot using the service manager on your VPS. Confirm that its configured user can read the source and configuration files and that required paths exist after startup.
- Reboot the VPS intentionally to test the failure you are trying to fix.
- After boot, inspect the service status and logs. Confirm the encoder process started and is producing output rather than merely remaining marked as running.
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and check the live preview. Confirm that YouTube is receiving the feed before treating the repair as verified.
The exact service commands and unit file are host-specific; the cited project shows one documented FFmpeg/systemd pattern. A successful test on your own VPS and encoder is the meaningful confirmation.
Check YouTube settings and stream credentials
YouTube’s help page describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Keep the key private. If you reset it, or the encoder reports that it is invalid, update the encoder with the current key. YouTube explains how reusable custom keys and encoder-controlled start and stop settings work in Manage live stream settings.

Verify both the YouTube Live server URL and stream key in the configuration the boot-started process actually reads. A correct key saved in a different file, user profile or interactive desktop session will not help a service that starts with different settings. YouTube’s encoder instructions describe entering the server URL and key in the encoder.
Troubleshoot a service that starts but does not stream
- The service is inactive after reboot: check whether it is enabled for boot, and read its logs for command errors, missing dependencies or an incorrect service definition.
- The process starts, but cannot open the video: check that the file or stream source exists at boot and that the service user has permission to read it. Confirm that mounted disks or network paths are available when the encoder starts.
- The encoder rejects its destination: verify the Live server URL and current stream key. Replace a reset or invalid key in the configuration used by the service.
- The process is running but output has stopped: inspect encoder output and errors, confirm the source is available and producing media, and check CPU load where relevant. A basic restart policy may not catch a process that stays alive while producing no useful output. A progress timeout is one possible additional check, as illustrated in the FFmpeg/systemd project above.
- The encoder sends output but YouTube has no healthy preview: check outbound Internet connectivity and the YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube recommends examining encoder errors, feed quality and the live preview when troubleshooting an encoder stream in its encoder guide.
- The service restarts repeatedly: use its logs to identify whether the cause is the command, source, permissions, destination credentials or network. Raising restart frequency without fixing the underlying cause can create a restart loop rather than a working stream.
Understand auto-start, reconnection and broadcast lifecycle
YouTube’s auto-start and auto-stop controls let an encoder start or stop a stream; they are not a VPS boot mechanism. The VPS still needs a service manager or equivalent to launch the encoder process.

A service restart also does not guarantee that every YouTube broadcast will continue as the same event. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived when content is stopped. Whether viewers see a reconnection, transition or new event depends on the stream and broadcast configuration; there is no universal outcome for every scheduled, reusable or auto-start setup. Check the Live Control Room after reconnecting.
