To fit a portrait devotional video in OBS without distorting it, preserve its proportions: make a vertical composition for a vertical stream, or fit the full portrait clip inside a landscape scene and use the empty space deliberately. If you want both vertical and horizontal viewers, set up both formats in YouTube Live Control Room before going live, then check the vertical preview. YouTube does not let you add the vertical format after a stream has started.
Choose the format before you build the OBS scene
Decide whether your stream is intended for phone viewers in portrait, desktop and TV viewers in landscape, or both. YouTube describes vertical live streams as a full-screen mobile experience and says viewers browsing Shorts may find them; that is a feature description, not a promise of reach. YouTube’s current interface and feature availability can change, so use the preview in Studio as your final check.
- Vertical only: Compose for a portrait canvas/output if your encoder and YouTube setup accept that format. Check the vertical preview before starting.
- Horizontal only: Keep the landscape canvas and fit the portrait source within it without stretching. Use the remaining space as part of the scene design.
- Both orientations: Use YouTube’s Live Control Room layout flow or send separate horizontal and vertical outputs through an external encoder, following YouTube’s stream-key instructions.
YouTube’s documented instructions do not provide click-by-click OBS settings for every version. The key principle is to match the intended composition and output format, then verify what viewers will see.
Set up vertical and horizontal viewing in YouTube
Use YouTube’s Live Control Room layouts
YouTube’s vertical layout options include Center crop, Fit to phone width and Stacked. The default vertical result is a center crop of the horizontal stream. You can adjust zoom and position in the editing canvas, so check the devotional focal point and any text in the preview.

- Fit to phone width: Preserves the source’s full width in the phone-oriented layout; depending on the source and canvas, it can leave unused space above or below.
- Stacked: Arranges separate content areas in a vertical composition. Design the layout deliberately, since each element may occupy less space.
Use an external encoder for two separate outputs
YouTube documents an encoder-based dual-stream setup using RTMP(S) and a second stream key for the vertical output. Send the matching format to each key: the horizontal output to its horizontal key and the vertical output to its vertical key. Prepare the vertical scene and confirm the format in the preview before starting.
In a portrait devotional composition, keep prayer text, captions, faces and central religious imagery away from areas a crop may remove. That is practical framing advice based on how cropping works, not a special YouTube rule.

Fit a portrait clip in OBS without stretching
A vertical source and a horizontal canvas have different aspect ratios. Stretching the source to fill the canvas changes its proportions and warps the picture. You have two sound choices: show the complete clip with unused space around it, or enlarge it until it fills the frame and accept that some of the source will be cropped.
- To show the whole portrait video: Fit it within the scene and fill the unused side space with a restrained background or another intentional scene element.
- To fill a vertical frame from a landscape source: Crop or reframe the source, then inspect what has left the edges. Keep the important subject and any text visible.
- Do not stretch: OBS advises against stretching mismatched content because it distorts the image. Its Aspect Ratio Guide explains the trade-off between fitting the whole source and enlarging it to fill (OBS Project Aspect Ratio Guide, dated 2021-11-27).
OBS’s guide covers the composition principle; the exact controls and labels can vary by OBS version. After arranging the scene, inspect the final output in YouTube’s vertical preview rather than relying only on the OBS canvas.

Preview, then start the stream
- Prepare or schedule the stream in YouTube Studio and open the Live Control Room preview.
- Select the intended vertical layout, or confirm the separate vertical encoder output and its matching stream key.
- Check the preview for cut-off devotional imagery, faces, captions and embedded prayer text. Adjust zoom and position if needed.
- Start the stream only after the intended formats appear correctly. YouTube says the vertical format cannot be added after the stream has begun, although a layout can be adjusted through the canvas while live.
What changes for viewers and channel features
YouTube says vertical live feeds can be discovered in the Shorts feed, while horizontal streams are not; vertical viewers also get a scrollable live feed. Discovery is a platform feature, not a guaranteed audience outcome.
For a dual-format stream, YouTube says subscribers receive one go-live notification with a shared stream URL: vertical-feed viewers see the vertical version, other viewers see the horizontal version, and both versions share one live chat. Combined metrics appear in Live Control Room; vertical-only metrics become available 24 hours after the stream, according to YouTube Help accessed in 2026.

YouTube’s feature comparison lists clickable links in chat and the channel description, live ad midrolls and pre-rolls, Premieres and Live Redirect as horizontal-only features; memberships and gifted memberships are listed for both formats. These features may depend on eligibility and current product behavior.

The reviewed YouTube instructions do not specify a different OBS canvas procedure for India. YouTube’s general live-stream eligibility guidance says the channel must be verified, must not have a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days, and the streamer must be at least 16. Check access on your own account in YouTube Studio; the guidance does not establish a separate India-specific exception (YouTube Help: Get started with live streaming, accessed 2026-10-03).
