How to Find Trauma-Informed Scuba Diving Programs for Veterans

Start with veteran-specific and adaptive-diving nonprofits, then screen each program for eligibility, trauma-informed instruction, location, referrals, medical paperwork, funding and buddy support. There is no national intake system: access usually comes through an individual nonprofit, an adaptive-sports affiliate, a VA referral or a destination program. The organizations below are useful starting points, but confirm current dates, chapters, staffing, eligibility and safety requirements directly before applying.

What “trauma-informed scuba” means for a veteran

Trauma-informed scuba is an approach to instruction and supervision that accounts for how PTSD, traumatic brain injury (TBI), anxiety, depression, military sexual trauma, amputations, paralysis, sensory impairments and other service-related experiences can affect learning and stress responses. It is not a single national certification or a guaranteed medical treatment. A responsible program adapts the pace, communication, equipment, buddy system and environment so a participant can remain in control.

Scuba organizations describe therapeutic, psychological or wellness benefits, but the available program materials do not establish a controlled statistic proving that scuba treats PTSD. Treat diving as an adjunctive recreational or adaptive activity, not a replacement for assessment, psychotherapy, medication or group therapy. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) provides those PTSD services through VA medical centers, Vet Centers and specialized PTSD programs.

The best starting programs and what each one offers

Eligibility and availability change. Use this table to decide whom to contact first, then ask each organization to confirm its current intake process.

Program Stated fit Access, funding and format to verify
Undersea Warriors Veterans and first responders recovering from PTSD, chronic adjustment disorder, TBI, anxiety, depression or military sexual trauma. Funds training, certification and personal snorkel gear. Based in Florida with a growing chapter network; confirm the nearest active chapter and intake.
Diveheart Veterans and adults with disabilities, including PTSD, TBI, amputations, spinal-cord injury and sensory impairments. A national adaptive-scuba nonprofit. Contact the organization to match your needs with a local opportunity, instructor and equipment plan.
LifeWaters People with VA disabilities and civilians with PTSD, TBI, amputations, multiple sclerosis, ALS, cerebral palsy, spina bifida and other disabilities. States that it provides nationwide outreach, adaptive skills and fellowship. Ask about current sites, volunteer support and funding.
Warfighter Scuba Combat-wounded veterans from NATO countries with PTSD or combat-related physical wounds. VA News described an online application, possible medical or military documentation and a seven-day Roatán experience including airfare, lodging, food and diving. Verify the current schedule, country eligibility and package.
Valhalla Dive Group People dealing with physical and emotional trauma, particularly military veterans and first responders. Provides adaptive or classified instruction, equipment and dive travel. Confirm location, classification, instructor coverage and equipment arrangements.
WAVES Project American veterans with service-connected injuries, including PTSD, amputations, spinal-cord and neurological injuries; family companions are part of the model. Established in 2012 and organized as a 501(c)(3). Trips and training are opportunity-based, so confirm dates, sites and available places.
Patriots for Disabled Divers Wounded veterans with PTSD, TBI, amputations and other injuries. Move United lists affiliate dive shops across many states and more than 750 veterans served. Verify the nearest affiliate, current enrollment and local costs.
Aquanauts Adaptive Aquatics Veterans and people with disabilities in South Florida. Offers veteran scholarships, Discover Scuba, open-water certification and adaptive courses. Ask how scholarship decisions are made and how health-and-safety requirements are applied.

A six-step search that works when you do not know where to begin

  1. Write down your non-negotiables. Note your state, travel tolerance, whether you want a pool tryout or open-water certification, your disability or access needs, preferred communication method, and whether a family member or caregiver must attend. Also list current PTSD symptoms, panic or dissociation triggers, hearing or vision limitations, medication considerations and any prior diving experience for discussion with professionals.
  2. Contact two or three organizations, not just one. Start with the table above. A program may have a national mission but no active event near you, while an affiliate shop may have a shorter intake queue. Ask whether the opportunity is a regular local class, an occasional trip, a chapter event or a referral to another provider.
  3. Ask the VA and veteran-service network for routing help. A VA clinician, recreational therapist, adaptive-sports coordinator, social worker or Vet Center counselor may know of current community programs. There is no single VA scuba referral portal, and a VA referral does not automatically guarantee acceptance or payment. Request the name of the person or organization handling the next step.
  4. Request the complete intake list in writing. Ask about discharge or service requirements, service-connected status, diagnosis documentation, physician clearance, dive-medical forms, military records, emergency contacts, companion rules, travel documents and deadlines. Requirements can differ even among programs serving similar disabilities.
  5. Screen the actual instructors and safety plan. “Adaptive” or “therapeutic” in a mission statement does not by itself explain how a class handles panic, dissociation, TBI-related processing needs or communication underwater. Use the questions in the next section before paying for travel or equipment.
  6. Build a support and follow-up plan. Decide who will accompany you, how you will get to the pool or boat, how you will contact your clinician, and what happens if you stop before certification. A good program should make pausing or ending a dive an accepted safety decision rather than a failure.

Questions that reveal trauma-informed and adaptive practice

Instructor preparation and staffing

  • What formal adaptive-diving, disability, first-aid, rescue and mental-health training do instructors have?
  • How many instructors, divemasters or support divers are assigned per participant, and does that ratio change for paralysis, amputations, sensory loss or a history of panic?
  • Can the program explain how it coordinates with a participant’s clinician without asking for unnecessary private mental-health details?

Orientation and pacing

  • Does instruction begin in a quiet pool or shallow, controlled setting before open water?
  • Can a participant repeat regulator breathing, mask and fin skills, buoyancy practice or surface communication until comfortable?
  • Can the participant choose a support person, buddy or same-gender instructor when that would improve safety and trust?

A 2025 VA Rural WAVE account describes an instructor taking a participant step by step through regulator breathing, mask and fins, followed by a pool swim. That gradual sequence is a useful example of pacing, but it is not a universal protocol.

Communication and distress procedures

  • Which hand signals, tactile signals, surface signals or communication devices are used for hearing, vision or processing limitations?
  • What specific signal means “stop,” and how will every buddy and boat crew member respond?
  • What happens if someone becomes panicked, dissociates, freezes, has a flashback or wants to leave the water immediately?
  • Can an instructor pause or terminate a dive without penalty, and is there a calm, private place to recover?

Equipment and physical adaptations

  • Will the program supply, modify or rent equipment for an amputation, limited grip, wheelchair transfer, spinal-cord injury or sensory impairment?
  • Who checks fit, weighting, buoyancy and accessible entries before the first dive?
  • Are boat ladders, pool lifts, changing rooms, bathrooms and transport accessible for your specific mobility needs?

Eligibility, medical paperwork and the VA

There is no universal requirement that a veteran have a service-connected disability. Undersea Warriors lists specific service-related mental-health conditions, including PTSD, chronic adjustment disorder, TBI, anxiety, depression and military sexual trauma. Warfighter Scuba describes combat-wounded or NATO eligibility. LifeWaters and Diveheart describe broader disability categories, while other programs may limit places to veterans with documented service-connected injuries.

Expect some combination of a program application, military or discharge information, medical history, physician or dive-medical clearance, emergency contact and documentation of a disability or diagnosis. Ask exactly what is required before requesting records. A program may accept a clinician’s letter instead of a full chart, or it may have its own medical form.

VA’s PTSD health-care program includes assessment, evidence-based psychotherapy, medication and group therapy, with almost 200 PTSD treatment programs and about 300 community Vet Centers listed on its current PTSD treatment information page (page checked in 2026). Coordinate a planned dive with your treating clinician and a qualified dive professional, particularly if symptoms are active, medication has recently changed, or you have seizures, cardiopulmonary conditions, balance problems or difficulties equalizing pressure. Neither a VA referral nor a nonprofit application replaces a fitness-to-dive evaluation.

What a first class or trip may look like

  1. Pre-intake conversation: Staff review goals, access needs, triggers, medical paperwork, emergency contacts, buddy preferences and what to do if you need to stop.
  2. Land briefing: Instructors explain equipment, breathing, hand signals, entry and exit, weighting, environmental conditions and the exact stop signal. Ask for a slower explanation, written notes or repetition if TBI, hearing loss or anxiety affects processing.
  3. Pool or confined-water session: Participants usually learn regulator breathing, mask and fin skills, buoyancy and controlled movement in a predictable setting. The instructor should check comfort rather than rush toward open water.
  4. Adaptive equipment setup: Staff adjust masks, fins, harnesses, weights, cylinders and transfer procedures for the participant. The setup should be tested before a boat departure or deep-water session.
  5. Supported open-water dive: A defined buddy team and support divers stay within the agreed plan. Conditions, depth, current, visibility and bottom time should match the participant’s training and comfort.
  6. Debrief and next decision: The team records what worked, what caused stress, equipment changes needed and whether the participant wants another pool session, certification step or no further diving.

Warfighter Scuba’s model, as described by VA News on November 5, 2019, included a seven-day Roatán experience with airfare, lodging, food and diving. A destination trip can provide concentrated support, but it also adds flights, unfamiliar routines, weather, fatigue and the pressure of a fixed schedule. Ask how the organization handles a missed dive or an early return.

Local classes versus destination programs

Choice Advantages Questions to resolve
Local pool or affiliate Less travel, easier clinician coordination, repeated practice and simpler follow-up. Is there an active adaptive instructor nearby? Can the facility accommodate transfers, privacy and your support person?
Multi-state nonprofit event Specialized staff, peer fellowship and access to equipment or volunteers not available locally. Who pays for transportation, lodging, meals, gear and a companion? What happens if symptoms or weather cancel a session?
Destination trip Immersive experience and concentrated instruction; some packages include major travel costs. What is included, what is refundable, how are medical needs handled away from home, and can you opt out of a dive without losing support?

Costs, scholarships and equipment

Do not assume that “nonprofit” means every class is free. Funding may cover training, certification, equipment, travel, lodging or only part of those costs; some programs rely on scholarships, grants, donors or volunteer support. Ask for a written estimate showing tuition, pool fees, certification fees, medical clearance, local transport, travel, lodging, meals, companion costs, equipment rental and cancellation rules.

Undersea Warriors explicitly says it funds training, certification and personal snorkel gear. Aquanauts Adaptive Aquatics offers veteran scholarships in South Florida. Warfighter Scuba’s VA News description included airfare, lodging, food and diving for the stated Roatán experience. Those examples do not establish a universal benefit, and funding terms may have changed.

A personal mask and snorkel can be useful for fit and hygiene, but buy them only after the accepted program confirms its requirements. Adaptive programs may supply or modify equipment, and a retail set cannot replace instruction, buoyancy checks or a professional equipment assessment.

If there is no program near you

  • Ask Patriots for Disabled Divers or another organization whether an affiliate dive shop serves your state or a neighboring state.
  • Ask Diveheart, LifeWaters or Valhalla Dive Group whether an outreach event, volunteer team or adaptive instructor can connect with a local facility.
  • Ask a VA adaptive-sports or recreational-therapy contact about pool-based alternatives while you wait for an open-water opportunity.
  • Request a waiting-list position and the date when the organization next reviews applications.
  • Do not substitute an ordinary introductory dive for adaptive or trauma-informed supervision when your disability or symptoms require specialized support.

Common pitfalls and how to avoid them

Assuming a diagnosis guarantees acceptance

Programs define their own scope. A veteran may meet one organization’s PTSD criteria but not another’s combat-wound, service-connected or geographic requirements. Ask for the written eligibility rule and an alternative referral if you are declined.

Treating scuba as PTSD treatment

Diving can provide structure, mastery, fellowship and a calming environment, but it should complement—not replace—clinical care. Tell your clinician about the plan and tell the dive team only the safety information it needs.

Booking travel before confirming intake

Trips may be opportunity-based, have limited spaces or require medical approval. Obtain acceptance, dates, inclusions, cancellation terms and companion rules before purchasing flights or lodging.

Buying equipment too early

Mask shape, fin style, harnesses, weights and adaptive modifications depend on the program and the participant. Wait until staff confirm what they supply and what you will actually use.

Failing to plan for a bad day

Ask in advance how the team responds to panic, nightmares, medication changes, sensory overload, weather cancellations, a lost buddy or a decision to end the dive. A clear exit plan is part of informed consent and safety.

Application and first-call checklist

  • Veteran status, discharge information and any service-connected documentation requested.
  • Diagnosis or disability information and the minimum medical form required.
  • Current clinician and dive-medical contact details.
  • Mobility, hearing, vision, communication and transfer requirements.
  • PTSD triggers, panic or dissociation concerns that affect underwater safety.
  • Preferred buddy, family companion or caregiver and their costs.
  • Pool accessibility, equipment adaptations, instructor-to-participant ratio and emergency plan.
  • Total expected cost, scholarship process, payment timing, travel support and cancellation policy.
  • What happens after the first class: further training, certification, local buddy support or referral.

A veteran participant quoted in the VA’s 2025 Rural WAVE account described the experience this way: “It’s amazing to have an activity that replaces the monsters in your head and your heart with peace and wonder and tranquility.” That possibility is worth exploring, but the right program is the one that pairs the appeal of diving with transparent eligibility, clinical coordination, adaptive expertise and a genuinely safe way to stop.
