Reliable research on antisemitism and the October 7, 2023 attacks starts with a claim, not a search result. Break the subject into checkable questions, trace each statement to its original record, test the source’s method and limits, corroborate consequential details independently, and write with explicit attribution. Treat institutional reputation as one clue—not a substitute for examining authorship, evidence, purpose, access and uncertainty.
This method helps you investigate documentary material, news reports, official statements, testimony, statistics and online photographs without turning a contested claim into an established fact.
What “reliable” means for this subject
Reliability is not a permanent label attached to an organization. A respected institution can accurately report one matter while lacking access to another; a primary record can show what someone said without proving that every assertion in it is true; and several articles may repeat the same unverified source. Evaluate each item for the particular claim you want to make.
The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum (USHMM) advises readers to investigate “the origin and authorship of all material, particularly anything found on the internet” and to “make careful distinctions about sources of information.” Its guidance also calls for attention to intended audience, bias, omissions and the ways material has been used to interpret events. Read the museum’s Guidelines for Teaching About the Holocaust when designing a research process or teaching students to assess evidence.

- Attribution and uncertainty: Are quotations, figures, allegations and limitations identified clearly?
- Context: Does the wording distinguish individuals, organizations, governments and populations?
A source can be useful even when it is partial. The important discipline is to state exactly what it establishes and what remains unresolved.
Define the claim before searching
“What happened on October 7?” is too broad to verify as one proposition. Turn it into a claim list. For each item, write the event, place, date or time, actor, evidence type and interpretation separately.
Break broad questions into testable parts
- Event: What conduct is being described?
- Location and time: Where and when did it occur, and which time zone or date convention is being used?
- Actor: Who is alleged to have acted, and is the source identifying an individual, unit, organization or government?
- Number: How was a casualty, displacement or incident figure counted?
- Evidence: Is the support a document, recording, testimony, dataset, image, video, direct observation or later analysis?
- Interpretation: Is the writer describing an established fact, an allegation, a legal finding, a historical explanation or an opinion?
Keep a research log with the exact wording of the claim, the source title, author or institution, publication date, URL, relevant passage, method, qualifications and any later correction. A search snippet, social-media repost or unsourced screenshot is a lead to investigate, not verification.
Choose the right source class
Different source types answer different questions. Start with the closest available record, then use secondary material to locate and explain it.

|---|---|---|
| Primary documents and records | Establish what an institution, court, government or organization formally issued or decided. | Is this the complete original, and has it been amended? Does it report evidence or merely state a position? |
| Investigative reports | Present a defined inquiry, mandate, evidence base and findings. | Who authorized the investigation? What could investigators access? Which findings are direct observations, sourced allegations or conclusions? |
| First-person testimony | Document an individual’s experience or observation. | When was it recorded? What could the witness perceive? Are corroborating records or accounts available? |
| Specialist educational institutions | Provide definitions, historical context and guidance on terminology. | Is the page educational guidance rather than an incident investigation? What framework and examples does it use? |
| Academic scholarship | Supply methods, historiography, theory and analysis based on cited evidence. | What sources and methods does the author disclose? Is the work peer reviewed, and what is its period of coverage? |
| Careful journalism | Locate records, report interviews and explain developments in accessible form. | Does the article link to documents and identify its sources? Is it independently reporting or repeating one institutional account? |
Use secondary reporting to find an original statement, transcript, dataset or report whenever practical. Then read the underlying item rather than relying on the article’s characterization alone.
Use primary records without overclaiming
An official document is strong evidence of what that office reported, ordered or concluded. It does not automatically settle every factual proposition inside it. An agency may have limited access, a political mandate or a stated evidentiary threshold. Quote or paraphrase the document precisely, identify its date and role, and explain any material limitation.
Trace a report to its mandate and method
The 2024 report A/HRC/56/26 by the UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry is an investigative source with a defined mandate. The Commission’s published material describes cross-referencing open-source information and, where needed, using visual authentication, geolocation, chronolocation and metadata analysis. It addresses attacks on civilian targets and a military base, as well as rocket and mortar attacks. Cite the Commission for its own methods and findings, and consult the report itself for the exact incident, date and qualification you are describing: UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry, A/HRC/56/26.

Do not turn the report’s existence into proof that every circulating account is verified. A commission’s mandate, access and evidentiary rules determine what it could establish. For a detailed incident or disputed number, pair the precise passage from the report with an independent source that directly supports the same proposition.

A government release, armed group communique or advocacy organization’s page can establish that the organization made a statement on a particular date. To establish the underlying event, seek records or reporting that independently address what happened. Write “the ministry reported…” or “the organization alleged…” unless the evidence supports a stronger formulation.
Apply “antisemitism” with an explicit framework
USHMM’s Antisemitism Explained states: “Antisemitism means prejudice against or hatred of Jews.” The resource discusses antisemitic stereotypes and Holocaust denial or distortion. USHMM explains that denial and distortion undermine historical understanding and perpetuate antisemitic stereotypes in its related material: Holocaust Denial and Distortion.
Use that definition as an orienting statement, then show the evidence for applying it. Identify the exact words or conduct, the setting, the target, the speaker or actor, and the relevant historical or political context. Explain which framework you are using and whether the source presents a settled finding, an allegation or an interpretation.
Avoid automatic classifications
Criticism of a government or policy is not automatically antisemitic, and a political framing does not automatically rule antisemitism out. Assess the actual statement and context. The sources cited here do not establish one universally adopted legal definition for every jurisdiction, so specify the framework and country when a legal classification matters.
Distinguish an individual from a population. Do not treat the conduct of one person, organization or government as evidence about Jews, Israelis, Palestinians, Muslims or any other broad group. Contextual language is both more accurate and less likely to reproduce the stereotypes you are trying to document.
Authenticate photos, video and other open-source material
Visual material can be persuasive and still be misdated, mislocated, edited or given a false caption. Preserve the original URL, uploader, upload time, file name and any available description before reposts alter the record.

- Find the earliest accessible upload. Record who posted it and whether the account has a documented connection to the scene.
- Check the date. Compare shadows, weather, uniforms, signage, event schedules and other time-sensitive clues. A platform’s upload date is not necessarily the recording date.
- Check the location. Match buildings, road layouts, terrain, language and fixed landmarks against independent mapping or contemporaneous records.
- Look for edits. Compare versions, cuts, audio continuity, cropping and compression. Preserve the unaltered file when available.
- Test the caption. Ask whether the surrounding text describes what the image actually shows, rather than treating the caption as evidence.
- Seek corroboration. Find separate recordings, photographs, testimony or official records that support the same time and place.
The Commission’s described use of visual authentication, geolocation, chronolocation and metadata analysis is a methodological example, not a guarantee that every image online has been authenticated. Attribute those techniques and any resulting conclusion to the Commission rather than implying that you performed the same examination or that all media are verified.
Corroborate consequential details
Corroboration means genuinely independent support. Five outlets repeating one anonymous official, wire report or social-media post still represent one originating account. Map the chain of reuse before counting sources.
Test independence
- Identify whether two reports interviewed different witnesses or relied on the same statement.
- Check whether a number comes from one database that every article cites.
- Prefer records created for different purposes—for example, a contemporaneous recording and a later administrative document—when both address the same detail.
- Record disagreements instead of averaging incompatible definitions or time periods.
For high-consequence claims, seek at least one source that directly supports the detail, not merely the general narrative. If independent confirmation is unavailable, say so and retain the original source’s qualification.
Handle numbers as measurements, not slogans
Incident counts are not interchangeable. Before publishing a figure, record the organization that produced it, the definition of an incident, geography, reporting period, inclusion rules, collection method, update date and whether duplicates or unverified reports are included.
No single current, cross-region statistic about antisemitic incidents after October 7 is established here. If you use a monitoring organization’s count, label it as that organization’s count under its stated methodology—not as a universal total. Explain revisions, underreporting, changes in reporting behavior and differences between allegations, confirmed incidents and prosecutions when those distinctions affect interpretation.
Write with visible attribution and calibrated certainty
Readers should be able to tell who observed, reported, alleged or interpreted each proposition. Use verbs that match the evidence.
| Evidence situation | Calibrated wording |
|---|---|
| Direct record of a public statement | “The ministry said in its 12 October statement that…” |
| Witness account not independently established | “A witness interviewed by the source described…” |
| Investigative finding | “The UN Commission’s 2024 report found, using the methods it describes, that…” |
| Contested allegation | “The organization alleged…, while an independent source reported…” |
| Analysis or interpretation | “The author argues…” or “This analysis interprets…” |
Keep the qualification next to the claim. Do not state a number in one paragraph and its geography or date several paragraphs later. If sources disagree, name the disagreement and explain whether it concerns facts, definitions, access or interpretation.

Common failure modes and repairs
Relying on reputation alone
Problem: Treating a famous institution as authoritative on every question.
Repair: Identify the institution’s role, mandate, evidence and limits for this specific claim.
Using a search snippet as evidence
Problem: A truncated result or repost hides the original wording and date.

A repeatable research-and-writing checklist
- Write each factual or interpretive claim in one sentence.
- Classify it as direct observation, official statement, testimony, investigative finding, allegation or analysis.
- Locate the earliest practical record and note its author, institution, date and version.
- Read the method, mandate, selection criteria and limitations.
- Check whether the source had access to the people, place, records or media it describes.
- For images and video, verify provenance, date, location, edits and caption.
- Seek independent corroboration for consequential details and map sources that repeat one another.
- For definitions, name the framework and apply it to the specific words or conduct.
- For statistics, record organization, geography, period, definition and counting method.
- Draft with attribution beside every contested or sourced proposition.
- Review for omitted context, population-level generalizations, gratuitous graphic detail and claims that exceed the evidence.
- Recheck recent corrections, revised datasets and updated investigative records immediately before publication.
Use humane, contextual language
Accuracy and care reinforce each other. Describe people as individuals rather than symbols for entire populations. Avoid graphic material unless it is necessary to answer the reader’s question, and explain why it is included. Give readers enough historical and political context to understand a statement without excusing documented harm. Precision about what is known, who established it and what remains uncertain is the clearest way to write responsibly about antisemitism and October 7.
