How to Find Reliable Sources on the History of Slavery in West Africa

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The most reliable way to study slavery in West Africa is to combine a specialist library guide and archival finding aids with original records, then test every account against evidence from other archives, languages and genres. Start with Yale’s African Studies research guide, the National Archives (UK) guidance on African ancestry and British slave-trade records, and scholarly source collections such as Africa’s Gold Coast Through Portuguese Sources, 1469–1680 and African Voices on Slavery and the Slave Trade: The Sources. Treat each item as evidence made for a particular purpose—not as a transparent account of the past.

“Reliable” therefore depends on your question. A shipping log may be useful for a vessel’s route, a court file for a dispute, an oral tradition for remembered kinship or captivity, and a missionary letter for the writer’s observations and assumptions. None, alone, represents the whole history of West African slavery.

Begin with research guides and archival finding aids

Use a university guide as a map, not a complete inventory

Yale’s African Studies research guide is a practical entry point to primary-source material on slavery and the slave trade held in its collections. Its subject terms, collection references and bibliographies can reveal the vocabulary archivists and historians use. Search those terms in other library catalogues and archive portals, and follow the bibliographies to published editions or manuscript collections. The guide is not a West Africa-wide catalogue: it points toward leads whose geographic and chronological limits you must check.

Read an archive’s scope statement before searching names

The National Archives (UK) guidance on African ancestry and British slave-trade records explains both the value and the limits of its holdings. Its records can illuminate British shipping, interception and aspects of the imperial system, including some documentation about capture and transportation from West Africa. The same guidance warns that tracing an individual who was enslaved in the transatlantic trade is difficult and that many records describe people after arrival at their destinations. A negative search is therefore not proof that a person or event did not exist.

Turn a finding aid into a search plan

  1. Define the question. Write the place, approximate dates, people or institutions, and the process you are investigating: enslavement within an African society, Atlantic commerce, abolition, or later memory.
  2. Extract catalogue language. Record the guide’s subject headings, variant spellings, language names and references to record groups.
  3. Locate the collection description. Note the archive, series, creator, date range, geographic coverage and access conditions before selecting individual files.
  4. Follow scholarly bibliographies. A cited edition or article often identifies earlier catalogues, manuscript numbers and related collections.
  5. Plan a second source type. For every administrative or commercial record, identify an oral, Arabic-language, legal, missionary or other record that could confirm, complicate or contradict it.

Build a source map before you interpret anything

West Africa is a large region with different political systems, languages and histories of enslavement. A source map prevents a document from being treated as representative beyond its reach. For each item, record:

  • the exact place or polity named, and whether the place refers to origin, transit or destination;
  • the date of creation and the period the document describes;
  • the creator’s institutional position, such as administrator, merchant, missionary, court official, translator or community member;
  • the intended audience and practical purpose;
  • the original language, script and any translation or editorial intervention;
  • the kind of evidence it preserves—transaction, testimony, observation, regulation, memory or interpretation;
  • what the record leaves out, including people who could not speak in the setting where it was produced.

Keep “enslavement within African societies,” “the Atlantic slave trade,” “abolition,” and “later remembrance” as separate labels. A document about one cannot automatically answer questions about another.

What kinds of sources can you use?

Colonial, court and administrative records

Colonial reports, court proceedings, petitions and administrative correspondence can provide names, disputes, places, dates and descriptions of institutions. Court records are particularly useful when a testimony, accusation or legal ruling preserves details absent from official summaries. They are not neutral transcripts: officials decided which disputes entered the record, how testimony was translated or condensed, and which legal categories mattered. Read the file’s provenance and compare its account with evidence produced outside the colonial bureaucracy.

Slave-trade and shipping records

Shipping documents, port records, interception reports and related British imperial records can help reconstruct voyages, routes and commercial decisions. The National Archives (UK) notes that some of its holdings concern capture and transportation from West Africa, while many records concern enslaved people at destinations. Use a shipping record for the question it can answer—such as a vessel’s movement or a transaction—and do not assume it supplies a full biography or the experience of captivity.

Missionary writing

Missionary letters and reports may describe encounters, conversions, conflicts or the treatment of enslaved people. Their authors wrote for religious authorities, donors or readers in another country, so their vocabulary and priorities shape what appears. Identify the writer, station, date, audience and purpose, then compare the account with local testimony, legal records or correspondence in another language.

Arabic correspondence and Islamic scholarly materials

Arabic correspondence and related writings can preserve names, political relationships, commercial activity and arguments that are absent from European records. Establish who wrote the text, for whom, in what setting and in which form of Arabic. If you are using a translation, retain the original title or manuscript reference and note decisions made by the translator or editor. A translated passage is evidence mediated by both the original author and the modern edition.

Oral traditions, songs, proverbs and interviews

Oral traditions, songs, proverbs and interviews with descendants or escapees can preserve memories of captivity, movement, status, resistance and family separation. They do not function like a dated shipping log. Ask when and from whom the account was collected, in which language, by whom, and under what circumstances. Compare recurring motifs and specific names or places with documentary evidence, while recognizing that later memory can retain meanings that administrative records omit.

Published translated collections

Edited collections make difficult records accessible, but their scope must remain visible. Kwasi Konadu’s Africa’s Gold Coast Through Portuguese Sources, 1469–1680, published by the British Academy in 2022, brings together translated letters, inquisitional files, ship logs, navigational guides, and religious and ethnographic accounts. It is a focused collection on the Gold Coast and Portuguese and other European records from 1469 to 1680, not a substitute for evidence from every part of West Africa or every period. Read the editor’s introduction, source notes and bibliographic references before drawing conclusions.

African Voices on Slavery and the Slave Trade: The Sources places conventional archival documents alongside oral traditions, folklore, songs, proverbs, Arabic correspondence and interviews with escapees. Its introductions help explain what each genre can illuminate and where it is constrained. Use the anthology to identify source types and further references, then consult the cited edition or archive whenever possible.

Evaluate reliability with the same questions for every item

Reliability is not a single ranking in which one genre is always “best.” It is a fit between a source and a question, strengthened by independent corroboration. Apply the following checklist before quoting or interpreting a document.

Question What to establish Why it matters
Who created it? Name, role, institutional position and relationship to the people described An administrator, trader, missionary, court clerk and witness had different access and incentives.
When and where? Date written, events’ dates, location of creation and places mentioned A later recollection or distant report cannot be read as an on-the-spot record.
For whom and why? Audience, legal or commercial purpose, reporting requirement or commemorative setting Purpose influences what was recorded, emphasized or omitted.
What genre? Court file, letter, log, report, testimony, song, proverb, interview or edited interpretation Genres preserve different kinds of detail and require different tests.
Which language and version? Original language, script, translator, editor and publication history Translation and editorial choices can alter terms, tone or categories.
Whose words are direct? Verbatim testimony, paraphrase, official summary or later recollection Many records preserve an intermediary’s account rather than an enslaved person’s own words.
What is silent? Missing names, unrecorded people, unavailable voices and excluded places Silence may reflect record-making conditions, not absence from history.

Write these answers in your notes and attach the archive’s catalogue description or the scholarly edition’s source note. That record of provenance lets another reader see how you reached your interpretation.

Triangulate across archives, languages and forms of evidence

Triangulation means comparing accounts that were produced in different settings, not collecting several copies of the same official narrative. A practical sequence is:

  1. State a narrow claim. For example, identify a named person’s movement, a court dispute in a particular place, or a ship’s documented route.
  2. Find the closest record. Use the archive or edition whose date and geography most directly match the claim.
  3. Locate an independent perspective. Add a court file, local-language text, oral account, missionary report, Arabic correspondence or commercial record created by a different institution.
  4. Compare details, not just conclusions. Check names, places, kin relationships, dates, quantities and descriptions of status. Agreement on one detail does not make every statement in either source true.
  5. Explain disagreement. Differences may arise from translation, legal definitions, incentives, memory, distance or changes over time. Preserve the conflict instead of smoothing it into a single story.
  6. Mark the limits. State which region, period and population the combined evidence covers and which remain undocumented.

Triangulation is especially important for colonial records. They may preserve valuable testimony while also reflecting an administrator’s categories and priorities. Setting them beside evidence created in other institutions or preserved through oral and linguistic traditions can reveal both their information and their distortions.

Keep geography, chronology and forms of slavery distinct

Enslavement within African societies

Questions about status, household labor, military service, inheritance or captivity inside an African society require sources tied to that society and period. Do not use an Atlantic shipping record as if it described every form of local enslavement.

The Atlantic trade

Voyage, port, merchant and imperial records can address capture, sale, transportation and destination. Their survival is uneven, and records made at destination may describe people after the journey rather than the circumstances of capture in West Africa.

Abolition and changing legal categories

Administrative and court records created during abolition may show how officials reclassified people and enforced new rules. Compare the legal language with lived testimony and local evidence; a change in terminology does not by itself demonstrate a change in conditions.

Later memory and family history

Oral histories, songs and interviews can preserve experiences transmitted across generations. Identify the date and circumstances of collection and distinguish a remembered genealogy from a contemporaneous transaction. Use documentary records to test specific names and places without treating an unlocated document as proof that the memory is false.

Working with translations and edited editions

Before relying on a translated passage, capture five pieces of information: the original document or manuscript, original language, translator, editor, and collection’s geographic and chronological scope. Read introductions and notes for omitted passages, uncertain readings, changes in spelling and editorial punctuation. Preserve key original terms when they carry legal or social meanings that an English equivalent may flatten.

Konadu’s Gold Coast collection illustrates why scope statements matter: its documents span 1469–1680 and focus on Portuguese and other European records connected to the Gold Coast. It can answer tightly framed questions about that setting and period, while requiring additional sources for other regions, later centuries or non-European perspectives.

A repeatable workflow for a research project

  1. Define your boundaries. Write the country or historical region, date range, type of enslavement or trade, and whether you are studying institutions, individuals or memory.
  2. Start with a guide. Use Yale’s African Studies guide to learn subject terms, collection names and bibliography trails.
  3. Read finding aids completely. Record creator, series, date range, language, place and restrictions before requesting files.
  4. Search by more than a modern name. Try historical spellings, polity names, ports, rivers, occupations, institutions and record-series terms identified by the guide.
  5. Separate discovery from proof. A catalogue entry, index or later quotation helps you find a document; the document and its provenance support the historical claim.
  6. Collect contrasting evidence. Pair an administrative or commercial record with a source created in another setting or preserved in another form.
  7. Log every interpretation. For each quotation, note page or file reference, language, translation, editorial changes and the precise claim it supports.
  8. Audit omissions. List people, places, periods and perspectives the surviving record does not cover.
  9. Write a bounded conclusion. Say what the evidence establishes, what remains contested and whether the limitation comes from survival, access or the source’s purpose.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

  • Treating one archive as the history of West Africa. Correct this by stating its institutional and geographic scope, then adding evidence from another archive or genre.
  • Reading colonial records as transparent observation. Identify the official’s role, legal framework and audience, and compare the account with testimony or locally produced evidence.
  • Assuming a missing name means a missing person. Follow the National Archives (UK) warning that individual tracing is difficult and that many records concern destinations. Search related series and family, community or place records, but report the gap honestly.
  • Blending different historical processes. Label internal enslavement, Atlantic commerce, abolition and later memory separately in notes and prose.
  • Quoting a translation without its editorial history. Record the original language, translator, editor and collection scope; consult notes for disputed or abbreviated passages.
  • Counting repeated reports as independent confirmation. Check whether later authors copied the same earlier document. Independent creation matters more than the number of times a claim appears.
  • Using a guide or anthology as the final authority. Treat it as a route to primary material and scholarship, then inspect the cited record and its provenance.

African Voices on Slavery and the Slave Trade: The Sources is a broad source anthology for comparing archival documents with oral, Arabic-language and testimonial evidence. Its introductions are particularly useful for understanding what each form can and cannot show.

Africa’s Gold Coast Through Portuguese Sources, 1469–1680, edited by Kwasi Konadu and published by the British Academy in 2022, offers translated letters, inquisitional files, ship logs, navigational guides, and religious and ethnographic accounts for a defined Gold Coast setting. Use it with its notes and with sources from other regions, periods and perspectives.

What a defensible source list looks like

A strong bibliography makes the evidence auditable. For every item, include the archive or edition, collection or series, creator, date, place, language, translator or editor, and the specific pages or file identifiers used. Add one sentence describing the source’s purpose and one sentence stating the main limitation. Organize entries by the question they answer rather than by prestige: a court file may establish a dispute, a shipping record a movement, and an oral account a remembered relationship. Together, with their differences made explicit, they provide a more reliable account than any single category could supply.
