How to Find Reliable Sources About the 2010 Chilean Mine Rescue

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Start with sources that had a defined institutional role, then match each source to the question it can actually answer. NASA’s oral-history collection is useful for NASA’s advisory work and named participants’ recollections; the Chilean Chamber of Deputies’ commission summary is the key institutional account of safety and oversight; Codelco’s 2010 sustainability report documents the company’s technical account of the search; U.S. House Resolution 1714 provides a dated congressional chronology; and the former president’s office offers an administration-centered retrospective. None should be treated as a complete account of every miner’s experience or as a substitute for the full Chilean investigation.

The rescue began after the San José Mine collapse on August 5, 2010, and ended when all 33 miners were brought out on October 13. A reliable article preserves each source’s perspective, labels disputed counting conventions, and never turns an institutional description into an unqualified legal or historical fact.

Start with a source-matched timeline

A short chronology gives you a way to test whether a source is describing the same event and period. Record the date, the institution making the claim, and the wording used for elapsed time.

Date or period What the cited source says How to use it
August 5, 2010, 13:40 local time Codelco’s 2010 Sustainability Report identifies this as the collapse that trapped 33 miners. The Chamber of Deputies summary also records the 2010 accident. Use Codelco for the company’s operational chronology and the Chamber for the commission’s investigative context.
Depth of the refuge The Chamber account places the miners about 700 meters underground; NASA gives 2,300 feet. Keep the unit and attribution attached to the figure rather than silently presenting one number as a universal measurement.
August 22, 2010 After 17 days, the miners were located alive. Codelco says probe 10B reached the refuge and returned the message “Estamos bien en el refugio los 33”. Attribute the drilling and message to Codelco; the U.S. House resolution supplies the dated legislative chronology.
October 13, 2010 NASA and the U.S. House resolution describe the rescue as lasting 69 days. The former president’s office describes a 70-day period. Report both formulations and explain that the difference may result from counting convention. Do not erase it by choosing a single total without attribution.

Codelco and the former president’s office both describe drilling as the decisive strategy after efforts to clear a blocked and unstable passage were abandoned. Because these are operational or administrative accounts, identify them as such rather than presenting them as an independently adjudicated engineering history.

Use each major source for the question it can answer

The following hierarchy is practical rather than absolute. A source can be authoritative for one question and limited for another. Proximity to the event, institutional purpose, and whether the material is an interview or a finding should all appear in your notes.

Source Best evidence for Perspective and limits
NASA History, “Chilean Miners Rescue Oral Histories” NASA’s advice on medical care, nutrition, psychological support, and engineering requirements for the rescue capsule; recollections from named participants. Transcripts come from audio-recorded interviews with limited revisions. NASA cautions that interviewees’ personal opinions are not necessarily the agency’s views. The collection does not replace miners’ own oral histories.
Chilean Chamber of Deputies investigative commission summary The mine’s safety conditions, closure and reopening, state oversight, testimony heard by the commission, and its conclusions about responsibility. This is a summary, not the complete commission report. Its responsibility statements are the commission’s findings, not an unqualified judicial determination.
Codelco, 2010 Sustainability Report, page 32 Codelco’s account of the early search, drilling strategy, and probe 10B reaching the refuge. It is a corporate report. Operational descriptions should be attributed to Codelco rather than treated as a neutral reconstruction.
U.S. House Resolution 1714 A dated congressional chronology, recognition of the rescue, and a description of NASA’s advisory role. Words such as “instrumental” are the resolution’s praise. They are not an independent measurement of NASA’s share of the operation.
Office of former Chilean president Sebastián Piñera, “Rescate en la Mina Chilena” The administration’s retrospective, its account of the rescue capsule, and President Piñera’s dated public statement. It represents the former president’s office. Treat its narrative and 70-day count as an institutional perspective.

NASA History oral histories

Use the overview page to establish what NASA says it contributed: advice about medical care, nutrition, psychological support, and an engineering-requirements document for the capsule. Then move to the individual transcripts when you need a named person’s recollection. A transcript can establish what that interviewee remembered or believed; it cannot automatically establish that every agency or rescue leader shared the view.

The interviews are derived from audio recordings and received limited revisions. Quote the speaker, identify the transcript, and preserve qualifiers such as uncertainty or personal judgment. NASA’s warning that opinions are not necessarily the agency’s views is part of the source’s meaning, not a footnote to omit.

For a precise citation, distinguish the collection overview from a particular interview transcript. The overview supports a general statement about NASA’s advisory remit; the transcript supports a statement such as “the named participant recalled…” Do not cite an interview as though it were an engineering specification, and do not infer that an interviewee’s recollection covers the miners’ day-to-day conditions.

Chamber of Deputies commission summary

Use this source when your question concerns why lawmakers investigated the disaster. The summary says the commission held 22 sessions and heard from public officials, company owners, specialists, labor representatives, and five rescued miners. That breadth makes it the strongest item in this set for documenting the investigation’s scope.

When describing responsibility, write that the commission identified the mine owners and SERNAGEOMIN as responsible in its account. Do not rewrite that sentence as “a court found” or “the owners were legally liable.” The summary is not the full report, and the available material does not establish a final judicial outcome.

The commission summary is also useful for separating oversight questions from rescue mechanics. It can support a description of mine closure and reopening, safety conditions, and state supervision as matters examined by lawmakers. It should not be used to fill in technical drilling measurements or personal stories that the summary does not report.

Codelco’s 2010 Sustainability Report

Page 32 is the place to look for Codelco’s own description of the search. It states that probe 10B reached the refuge on August 22 and returned the note, “Estamos bien en el refugio los 33”. The exact wording matters: it is a contemporaneous company account of a message recovered during drilling, not a later paraphrase.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use Codelco to explain the company’s technical role and early-search decisions. Pair it with another institutional account when describing the broader operation, because a sustainability report is designed to report the company’s activities and perspective.

Keep the page number in your notes and identify the document as the 2010 report, not merely “a Codelco source.” That detail lets a reader distinguish the company’s contemporaneous reporting from later summaries. If you quote the Spanish message, retain its spelling and punctuation; an English translation should be clearly marked as such.

U.S. House Resolution 1714

The resolution is useful for a dated legislative account of the discovery and rescue timeline and for showing how the United States Congress characterized NASA’s involvement. If you use “instrumental,” put it in a sentence such as “The resolution called NASA’s contribution instrumental.” That grammar keeps praise attached to the body that issued it.

A resolution records what legislators recognized and how they framed the episode; it is not an incident log or a technical after-action report. Use it to corroborate dates and the stated advisory role, while checking operational details against Codelco or the Chilean administrative account.

The former president’s office retrospective

“Rescate en la Mina Chilena” is an administrative retrospective. It can document how the president’s office presented the capsule, drilling decisions, and the government’s response. If you provide an English rendering, label it as a translation and retain the Spanish original for verification.

Because the item comes from a former president’s office, it is especially useful for official messaging and the administration’s retrospective, not for assigning independent blame. Its use of “70 days” should remain visibly attached to that source when you compare it with the 69-day wording in NASA and the House resolution.

Compare sources by role, proximity, and claim type

Before drafting, make a three-part comparison for every important statement. First ask who produced the record: a space agency, a legislative commission, a company, a congressional body, or a presidential office. Next ask how close the record is to the event: an audio interview, a 2010 corporate report, a later investigative summary, or an administrative retrospective. Finally ask what kind of claim it makes: describing an operation, reporting testimony, expressing praise, or assigning responsibility.

Comparison question Why it matters Example
Who is speaking? Institutional authority is specific to the subject, not universal. NASA can describe its advice; the Chamber can report its commission’s conclusions.
When was it recorded? Timing affects whether a record is contemporaneous, retrospective, or recollected. Codelco’s 2010 report and a later oral-history transcript should not be treated as the same kind of evidence.
What is the source trying to do? Purpose shapes emphasis and omissions. A sustainability report highlights Codelco’s activities; a resolution recognizes the rescue.
What verb fits? Source-sensitive verbs prevent overstatement. “Recalls,” “reports,” “describes,” and “concluded” carry different evidentiary meanings.

This comparison also helps resolve apparent conflict. If one account gives a 69-day duration and another gives 70, first identify each institution’s purpose and counting language. If one source describes a decision and another assigns responsibility, they may not be contradicting each other at all; they may be answering different questions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Separate operations, testimony, and findings

Many weak accounts blend three different kinds of evidence. Keep them in separate columns in your notes:

  • Operational description: what an organization says it did, such as Codelco’s drilling account or the former president’s office’s capsule narrative.
  • First-person recollection: what a named NASA participant remembers in an oral-history interview. This is evidence of that person’s experience and interpretation.
  • Investigative finding: what the Chamber commission concluded after hearings and testimony. A finding still needs its institutional attribution and legal qualification.

When two accounts describe the same event, do not merge their verbs. “Codelco reports that probe 10B reached the refuge” is different from “the commission concluded that the company was responsible for unsafe conditions.” The first describes an operation; the second assigns responsibility within an investigative process.

How to research the rescue step by step

  1. Define the question. Write one sentence, such as “What did NASA advise?” or “What did Chilean lawmakers conclude about oversight?” Avoid starting with a broad request for “the true story.”
  2. Choose the matching institutional source. Begin with NASA for NASA’s contribution, the Chamber summary for safety and oversight, Codelco for its own technical account, the House resolution for the congressional chronology, and the former president’s office for the administration’s retrospective.
  3. Capture the source’s identity. Record the institution, title, publication or report year, page number where available, and whether the item is an interview, summary, resolution, or corporate report.
  4. Extract claims with attribution attached. In your notes, write “NASA says…” or “the commission reported…” before every factual statement. This prevents attribution from disappearing during drafting.
  5. Build a date table. Enter the August 5 collapse, August 22 discovery, and October 13 rescue, then add the source’s elapsed-day count. Keep “69 days” and “70 days” in separate cells until you understand the counting convention.
  6. Check quotations against the original wording. Preserve the Spanish rescue message and Piñera quotation exactly when quoting. Mark translations as translations, and do not turn a transcript’s edited punctuation into a new sentence that changes meaning.
  7. Cross-check high-stakes claims. For technical actions, compare Codelco with the administrative retrospective. For responsibility, use the Chamber summary and label it as a commission conclusion. For NASA’s role, compare NASA’s own overview with the House resolution’s characterization.
  8. Mark what the source cannot establish. A NASA interview cannot prove every miner’s experience; a corporate report cannot settle legal liability; a commission summary cannot substitute for the complete report; and a presidential-office retrospective cannot stand for every Chilean institution.
  9. Draft with source verbs. Prefer “reports,” “describes,” “records,” “recalls,” and “concluded” over the unqualified “proved” or “was.” This preserves the evidence trail for readers.

Search using the source’s own language

Search titles and institutional labels exactly before trying broad web queries. Useful wording includes “Chilean Miners Rescue,” “Rescate en la Mina Chilena,” and “accidente de la Mina San José.” These labels identify the event and the records’ language; they do not prove which questions readers ask most often.

For English-language searches, combine the event name with an institution and document type, such as NASA History plus “oral histories,” or “House Resolution 1714.” For Spanish-language searches, retain accents and the mine’s name, then add terms such as commission, safety, or rescue. Once you locate a promising page, confirm that it is the institutional item itself rather than a commentary that merely cites it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Save the stable title, issuing body, date or report year, and page or transcript identifier. A bare link is not enough when an institution hosts several versions of a retrospective or when a PDF’s pagination differs from a web viewer’s screen count.

Handle the 69-day and 70-day counts transparently

The difference is not a reason to discard either source. NASA and the U.S. House resolution call the period 69 days, while the former president’s office calls it 70 days. Present the counts with their sources and note that the discrepancy may reflect how the start and end dates are counted. Do not claim that one institution made a mathematical error unless you have a separate, explicit record establishing that.

The same rule applies to depth. The Chamber summary’s approximately 700 meters and NASA’s 2,300 feet describe the underground location in different units and institutional contexts. Retain the unit and wording supplied by each source instead of implying a precision the records do not provide.

What the sources do not establish

This set of records is strong for institutional chronology and NASA’s advisory contribution but incomplete for several important questions. It does not provide a complete archive of Chilean primary records, the full commission report, detailed drilling measurements, or a comprehensive collection of miners’ oral histories.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Do not invent individual miners’ motives, emotions, medical details, or conversations from an institutional summary.
  • Do not present NASA as the organization that ran or led the rescue. The NASA material describes an advisory role.
  • Do not convert the Chamber commission’s responsibility findings into a final court judgment.
  • Do not use the event figures as general mining-safety statistics. They are facts about this rescue, not results from a broader statistical study.
  • Do not treat a company’s operational account as independent corroboration of its own performance.
  • Do not imply that five miners’ testimony in the commission summary represents all 33 miners.
  • Do not infer technical capsule dimensions, drilling rates, medical outcomes, or legal penalties from a source that does not state them.

For a deeper investigation, consult the complete commission report, original Chilean government records, and directly attributable interviews with rescued miners. Until those materials are in hand, qualify claims about personal experience, technical measurements, and legal outcomes.

A citation checklist for your finished article

  • Is every date, number, and quotation tied to the institution that supplied it?
  • Does the timeline distinguish the August 22 discovery after 17 days from the October 13 extraction and its 69-day or 70-day wording?
  • Have you identified NASA’s role as advice on medical care, nutrition, psychological support, and capsule engineering requirements rather than command of the rescue?
  • Have you described the Chamber material as a commission summary and its responsibility statements as findings?
  • Have you labeled Codelco’s drilling narrative as a company account?
  • Have you identified the House resolution’s praise as congressional characterization?
  • Have you labeled the former president’s office account as an administrative perspective and marked any English translation of Piñera’s quote?
  • Have you avoided presenting the institutional records as a complete record of the miners’ own voices?
  • Have you preserved the exact Spanish wording of quoted statements and identified the relevant page or transcript?
  • Have you separated event facts from general mining-safety statistics?

Frequently Asked Questions

Which source is best for NASA’s role in the rescue?

NASA History’s “Chilean Miners Rescue Oral Histories” overview is the best starting point. It describes advice on medical care, nutrition, psychological support, and engineering requirements for the capsule. Use individual transcripts for named participants’ recollections, and remember that NASA says personal opinions in interviews are not necessarily the agency’s views.

Where can I verify the message from the trapped miners?

Codelco’s 2010 Sustainability Report, page 32, says probe 10B reached the refuge on August 22 and returned “Estamos bien en el refugio los 33”. Attribute the wording to Codelco and preserve the Spanish original when quoting.

Did NASA lead the rescue operation?

The NASA material describes an advisory contribution, not command of the rescue. NASA offered recommendations on medical care, nutrition, psychological support, and capsule engineering requirements. Do not turn congressional praise that NASA was “instrumental” into a claim that it ran the operation.

What does the Chamber of Deputies source prove?

The commission summary documents the investigation’s scope, including 22 sessions and testimony from officials, owners, specialists, labor representatives, and five rescued miners. It reports the commission’s conclusions about mine owners and SERNAGEOMIN. Those are investigative findings, not automatically a final judicial ruling.

Why do some sources say 69 days and another says 70?

NASA and U.S. House Resolution 1714 use 69 days, while the former president’s office uses 70 days. The difference may reflect how the start and end dates are counted. Report each figure with its source instead of silently choosing one or alleging an error without a separate record.

Can I use a miner’s experience from the NASA oral histories?

Not unless the particular transcript contains that miner’s own attributable testimony. NASA’s collection focuses on NASA participants and does not replace direct oral histories from the rescued miners. Avoid assigning emotions, motives, medical details, or conversations that the cited transcript does not state.

Is Codelco’s report an independent account?

No. It is a corporate report describing Codelco’s own technical contribution and early-search chronology. It is valuable for what Codelco says it did, but pair it with other institutional records and do not present it as neutral corroboration of the company’s performance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I consult for a definitive legal outcome?

The listed summary does not establish a final judicial outcome. Consult the complete Chamber commission report and original Chilean government or court records, then attribute any legal conclusion to the specific record that establishes it.

The Bottom Line

Build the article around a source-question match: NASA for its advisory work and participant interviews, the Chamber of Deputies for investigative scope and attributed responsibility findings, Codelco for its company account of drilling and probe 10B, the House resolution for congressional chronology, and the former president’s office for the administration’s retrospective. Keep dates, units, quotations, institutional praise, and the 69-day/70-day difference attached to their sources. That discipline produces a reliable account without claiming more than these records can establish.
