The fastest way to find music from a YouTube video is to check the video’s own description first. Open Show more and look for Music or Music in this video. If YouTube has no useful credit, use Shazam on a phone, a browser recognizer on a computer, or humming and lyric searches for harder cases.
Start with YouTube’s own credits
The quickest way to identify music in a YouTube video is to check the video itself before installing anything. Open the full description by selecting Show more (or more), then look for a section called Music, Music in this video, or a similar music-attribution block.
When available, this section may list the song and artist and link to official music content. YouTube can add it automatically when music is identified through copyright-management systems such as Content ID, or when the creator uses music from the YouTube Audio Library. It is often the strongest starting point, but it is not guaranteed to be complete or correct: label or distributor metadata may be missing, and a listed track may not be the music playing at the timestamp you care about.
After finding a possible match, play the relevant part of the video again and compare the title, artist, vocals, arrangement, and timestamp. Treat the credit as a strong lead—not automatic proof.

Check the creator’s other clues
- Description: Look for manually added song credits, soundtrack lists, or links.
- Pinned comment: Creators sometimes identify background music in a pinned reply.
- Chapters: Expand the video chapters and jump to the section where the music begins.
- End credits: Documentary, film, gaming, and travel videos may identify music near the end.
- Playlists: The creator may link to a soundtrack or music playlist.
These are creator-supplied clues, so confirm them against the audio rather than assuming that every listed track appears throughout the video.
Use Shazam when the original recording is audible
For a recognizable commercial recording, Shazam is usually the best automated fallback. Apple documents that Shazam can identify music playing around you or inside another app, including YouTube, TikTok, and Instagram.
On a phone
- Open the YouTube video and move to a section where the music is clear.
- Open Shazam and start recognition. On supported Apple devices, you can also start music recognition from Control Center.
- Return to YouTube while the song continues playing.
- Wait for the result, then pause the video.
- Compare the returned title and artist with the audio and the exact video timestamp.
On Android, use the Shazam app or an available Shazam shortcut or widget. The exact controls can vary by device and app version.
Improve the chance of a match
- Skip past introductions and narration.
- Choose a section with isolated vocals or a distinctive instrumental melody.
- Avoid dialogue, sound effects, applause, and transition audio.
- If the first attempt fails, try two or three other timestamps.
- For a long mix, repeat the process at different points; one recognition pass may identify only the track currently dominant in the mix.
Shazam can queue an identification request while offline and complete it after connectivity returns when the track is available in its catalog. That does not guarantee recognition of obscure, unreleased, heavily altered, or uncatalogued audio.
If you need a fallback after YouTube’s metadata is missing, compare a song identifier app with a desktop browser tool or a humming-based search. These services are useful in different situations, and none should be treated as guaranteed to identify every recording.
Identify music from YouTube on a computer
If you are watching on a desktop or laptop, a browser recognizer can listen to the YouTube tab directly. AHA Music states that its Chrome extension can detect songs playing in browser tabs, including YouTube streams. It also offers audio- and video-file recognition.

- Install the extension from a trusted browser marketplace or use the service’s official page.
- Open the YouTube video in a separate browser tab.
- Start a clear section of the music.
- Activate the browser extension and wait for a result.
- Compare the returned title and artist with the actual audio and timestamp.
This is more convenient than playing YouTube through one device while holding a phone near the speakers. It can still fail when speech covers the music, when the audio is only a brief sound effect, or when the video contains a DJ mix or unofficial edit.
Use a short extracted clip when necessary
AHA Music says its file-recognition workflow attempts the first 60 seconds of an uploaded file and supports common audio and video formats, with a stated maximum file size of 100 MB. If you use this approach, do not upload an entire long video. Cut a clean excerpt that begins where the melody or vocals are easiest to hear, and check the service’s current privacy and upload terms before submitting personal or unpublished material.
Try humming or singing when you cannot replay the recording
If you remember the melody but cannot access the YouTube audio, SoundHound can search for music that you hear, sing, or hum. Its support guidance recommends that one person hum or sing for at least about 10 seconds for better results.
- Choose the main vocal melody or the most memorable instrumental line.
- Hum or sing steadily for at least 10 seconds.
- Keep background noise low and avoid speaking over the melody.
- Review several results instead of accepting the first approximate match.
- Compare a candidate with the original video if you can access it again.
Humming recognition is less certain than matching the original recording. It may return songs with a similar melodic contour, particularly when the remembered tune is incomplete or sung in a different key.
YouTube’s own song search on Android
YouTube also documents song search on Android, allowing a user to hum or record a currently playing song to find related YouTube videos, Shorts, and official music content. The feature and its interface can vary by device, account, and YouTube app version, so do not worry if the control is not present on your phone.
What to do when no tool finds the song
1. Isolate a better excerpt
Recognition tools work from an audio signature or melody pattern. A clean excerpt containing a recognizable chorus, vocal phrase, or instrumental hook is more useful than narration, crowd noise, applause, or sound effects. Try a section after the introduction and another before a transition.

2. Check whether the audio was altered
The result may be correct in principle but fail to match because the video uses a different version. Listen for:
- sped-up or slowed-down audio;
- pitch-shifted or “nightcore” edits;
- reverb-heavy versions;
- instrumental or karaoke versions;
- live performances;
- covers;
- remixes, mashups, and unofficial edits.
Search a promising title with terms such as remix, cover, sped up, slowed, live, or instrumental. Then compare the arrangement and the timestamp. These searches help investigate a mismatch, but they do not prove that an alternate version is the source.
3. Search distinctive lyrics
If the vocals are intelligible, write down a distinctive consecutive phrase and search for it in quotation marks with the word lyrics. Avoid generic phrases such as “I love you” or “feel the music.” Use several unusual words where possible.
Verify the result by listening to the recording. Lyric websites, automatic captions, and user-submitted transcriptions can contain errors, especially when the audio is quiet or heavily mixed.

Search the comments for terms such as song, music, track, or soundtrack. Check replies from the creator and any pinned comment. A playlist or written credit can also help when automated recognition has failed.
Mark these as user- or creator-supplied evidence. Confirm the suggestion at the relevant timestamp before treating it as the answer.

5. Consider that it may not be a conventional song
The audio could be a production-music cue, stock-music track, game soundtrack, public-domain composition, short-form sound, field recording, original beat, or a brief sound effect. Recognition services may return nothing even when the audio was deliberately chosen.
For a documentary or video essay, also check whether the music is part of a licensed production-music catalog. A track may have a title and composer but still be difficult to find through mainstream music services.

Identification is not copyright permission
Finding a song’s title and artist answers one question: what is this music? It does not answer another: may I reuse it?
Copyright commonly applies to both the sound recording and the underlying musical composition. Reusing music in a new video may require permission, a suitable license, or another applicable legal basis. The rules can depend on the recording, composition, use, territory, and facts of the project.
Do not assume that a description saying “free music” makes a track safe to reuse. YouTube warns that such wording does not prevent a Content ID claim.
If you want to use the track in your own video
- Identify the exact recording and version.
- Find the rights holder or the original licensing source.
- Read the license terms, including attribution, monetization, territory, platform, and commercial-use restrictions.
- Save proof of the license or permission.
- Check whether the license covers the specific edit, upload, and audience you intend.
- Keep a replacement track available in case the rights terms do not fit.
Creators can also check YouTube Audio Library or Creator Music for alternatives. Availability, licensing options, and usage terms in Creator Music can vary by eligibility, geography, and the rights holder’s settings, and those terms can change. If you need music for a new production, look for copyright-safe music for YouTube and read the individual track’s terms rather than relying on a general label.
