The most reliable starting point is the Instituto do Cinema e do Audiovisual (ICA) Agenda. It gives you a countrywide scan of festivals and screenings. From each listing, open “Mais informações” and then confirm the current programme, venue, session time, ticket rules, subtitles and accessibility on the organiser’s own page. For documentary-focused programming, check DocLisboa in Lisbon and Porto/Post/Doc in Porto; use the same calendar to find regional events such as Vista Curta in Viseu and Curtas Vila do Conde.
Event dates and ticket conditions are edition-specific. The examples below are dated to 2026 unless a different year is stated, so verify every session before travelling.

Start with the national ICA calendar
The ICA Agenda is the best first pass because it brings together cinema events in different Portuguese cities rather than limiting your search to Lisbon or Porto. Its current listings include DocLisboa in Lisbon and Vista Curta in Viseu, demonstrating why a national calendar is more useful than relying on one city’s cinema listings.
- Open the ICA Agenda.
- Look through the dated event entries for festivals, screenings and related film activities.
- Open the listing’s “Mais informações” link. That link takes you to the organiser or venue where the practical information is maintained.
- Record the city, dates and named venues, then open the organiser’s current programme before making plans.
The agenda is a discovery tool, not a guarantee that every session remains unchanged. A listing can identify an event while the festival later adjusts its programme, times or locations. Treat the official event page as the final authority.

What to record from each listing
A quick note made while browsing saves time later. Copy the event name exactly, the city, the announced festival dates, the official website and every venue named in the listing. Then add a separate line for the individual film, screening date, start time and ticket page once the detailed programme is online. Keeping festival dates separate from session dates prevents a common mistake: assuming that a film plays throughout the entire event.
Also note whether the calendar describes a documentary festival, a short-film festival or a general film event. That description tells you how much filtering you will need. A documentary-focused event may let you browse by day, while a broad festival requires checking sections, catalogues or individual film records.
Use documentary-focused festivals as your next search
DocLisboa in Lisbon
For 2026, the ICA listing dates DocLisboa from 15–25 October 2026. It names four Lisbon venues: Culturgest, Cinema São Jorge, Cinemateca Portuguesa and Cinema Ideal. Use those names to check venue calendars and to identify the right address for a particular screening. The festival’s current information should be checked for the session list and ticket instructions rather than relying on a past edition.
Four venues also mean four possible sets of practical conditions. A film listed under DocLisboa may be in a different part of Lisbon from the previous session, and a venue’s own box office may have instructions that differ from another location. When you build a day plan, leave time to travel between venues and confirm which entrance or room is specified in the current programme.

That edition described both online and box-office sales, gave different standard prices for some venues, stated that films had Portuguese and English subtitles, and warned that the programme could change. Those statements apply to the 2025 edition only; they do not establish 2026 prices, sales channels or subtitle coverage. Consult the 2025 ticket information only as a historical example, then follow the current festival and venue pages.
Porto/Post/Doc in Porto
Porto/Post/Doc’s official site describes a festival centred on documentary and contemporary documentary practices. The Visit Portugal event listing gives the 2026 dates as 19–28 November 2026 and describes a programme spread across several Porto venues, with screenings, retrospectives and related activities.
Because the event uses more than one venue, do not assume that a festival pass or a single address covers every session. Open the current programme, note the venue attached to each film and check the ticket instructions for that specific event. Retrospectives and related activities may not follow the same schedule or admission route as a standard screening, so read the event type as well as the title.
Look beyond the two largest cities
Vista Curta, Viseu
The ICA Agenda lists Vista Curta in Viseu for 13–17 October 2026 and identifies multiple venues in the city. Vista Curta is a short-film festival rather than a documentary-only event. Search its current programme for documentary titles before treating it as a documentary destination.
For a short-film event, check the programme’s section or block headings, not just the festival name. A documentary may be part of a competition, a thematic programme or a special session. If the listing gives several Viseu venues, match the title to the exact venue and allow for movement between locations.
Curtas Vila do Conde
Curtas Vila do Conde’s official site provides programme, film-catalogue, news and newsletter routes. The municipal listing for its 34th edition describes a ten-day event from 17–26 July 2026, with competitions, premieres, retrospectives and special programmes. It is a broad international film festival, not a documentary-only festival, so use the programme or catalogue to locate documentary selections.
Rank #2
- Factory sealed DVD
The festival’s breadth is part of its appeal, but it also changes the search task. Search the catalogue for documentary descriptors, read the synopsis and confirm that the item is a screening rather than an industry or discussion event. The municipal description establishes the length and broad activities; the official festival programme is where individual films, times and venues should be confirmed.
Cinemateca Portuguesa’s programme page records collaborations with Curtas Vila do Conde and publishes programme information. The specific page at Cinemateca Portuguesa Programação contains historical material, so navigate from the site to the current schedule instead of treating that page as a live 2026 calendar.

A repeatable search workflow
1. Define the kind of event you want
Decide whether you want a documentary-only festival, a single documentary screening, or a general film festival that includes documentaries. Porto/Post/Doc is explicitly documentary-focused. Vista Curta and Curtas Vila do Conde cover short or wider film programmes, so they require an additional title-by-title check.
It also helps to decide whether you want a premiere, a retrospective, a competition film or simply any documentary available on a convenient date. Visit Portugal’s description of Porto/Post/Doc mentions screenings, retrospectives and related activities, while the Vila do Conde listing mentions competitions, premieres, retrospectives and special programmes. Those labels can guide your choice once the detailed programme is released.
2. Search nationally before narrowing by city
Start with the ICA Agenda and note every plausible city and date. This avoids missing regional events. A Lisbon-only search would not surface the Viseu listing, and a Porto-only search would miss events elsewhere in the country.
After the national scan, filter by practical constraints: the dates you can attend, the city you can reach and whether the event is documentary-focused enough for your purpose. Do not discard a regional listing merely because it is not labelled documentary; broad festivals can contain strong documentary selections, but they need closer programme checking.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →3. Move from the calendar to the organiser
Click “Mais informações” in the ICA entry, then use the organiser’s programme page. For Porto/Post/Doc, use the official festival site and the Visit Portugal listing. For Curtas Vila do Conde, use the official festival site and, when useful, the municipality’s event listing.
The Portugal Film Commission Agenda is another calendar worth checking alongside ICA. Use it as an additional discovery route, then apply the same rule: the organiser or venue page supplies the final programme, address and ticket information.
4. Match each film to a venue and session
Write down the film title, date, start time and venue exactly as shown in the current programme. Festivals with several venues can have simultaneous sessions in different parts of a city. A festival name alone is not enough to plan a day.
Check whether a programme item is a screening, a talk, a masterclass or another related activity. Porto/Post/Doc’s listing includes related activities, and Curtas Vila do Conde’s description includes several programme types. Only a session identified as a screening answers a request for a film showing; other events may require separate registration or have different access rules.
Rank #3
5. Verify admission before purchasing
Check whether the session uses advance online sales, a venue box office, a pass or a single-ticket route. Confirm the applicable price, concessions and any venue-specific rule on the current ticket page. Historical prices cannot be carried over to a new edition.
For a multi-venue festival, open the ticket instructions linked to the exact venue as well as the festival-wide page. The 2025 DocLisboa information illustrates why: it described online and box-office sales and showed a different standard price for Cinemateca Portuguesa. That is a reason to check, not a price to assume for 2026.
6. Check language and access information
Look for the subtitle language shown for the individual film or session. Do not assume that Portuguese or English subtitles are available at every Portuguese event. DocLisboa’s 2025 information said that edition’s films had Portuguese and English subtitles; it is not a nationwide or 2026 guarantee. Also check the venue or festival for accessibility details, because these can vary by room and session.
If the programme does not state subtitle or accessibility details, contact the organiser or venue before buying. Ask about captioning, audio description, step-free access or seating arrangements in concrete terms rather than relying on a general festival statement. Keep any reply with your ticket information in case the session changes.

Programmes can change. DocLisboa’s ticket information explicitly warned that its programme could be altered. Reopen the official programme and ticket page on the day before travel, and confirm the venue address and start time once more.
Do the same check if you are travelling from another city. A changed start time can affect trains, accommodation and connections between venues. If a listing has disappeared, look for the festival’s news or programme-update page rather than relying on a cached calendar entry.
2026 examples at a glance

| DocLisboa | Lisbon | 15–25 October | Documentary festival; ICA lists Culturgest, Cinema São Jorge, Cinemateca Portuguesa and Cinema Ideal as venues. |
| Vista Curta | Viseu | 13–17 October | Short-film festival with multiple Viseu venues; check the programme for documentary titles. |
| Porto/Post/Doc | Porto | 19–28 November | Documentary-focused festival with screenings, retrospectives and related activities across several venues. |
| Curtas Vila do Conde, 34th edition | Vila do Conde | 17–26 July | Ten-day international film festival with competitions, premieres, retrospectives and special programmes; documentary status depends on the individual selection. |
The dates in this table come from the ICA Agenda, Visit Portugal and the Município de Vila do Conde listing. They are planning anchors, not substitutes for a live session schedule.
How to compare two possible events
Programme fit
Choose a documentary-focused festival when you want the highest likelihood that most sessions are documentaries. Porto/Post/Doc describes that focus directly. At Vista Curta or Curtas Vila do Conde, search the programme for documentary titles and formats; a general festival may offer only a small documentary selection.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
If your priority is a particular director, country or theme, use the film catalogue or programme search rather than the festival label. A broad festival can be the better match for a specific title, while a documentary-focused festival is usually the easier choice for discovering several documentaries in one visit.
Location and venue complexity
Use the national agenda to identify the city, then count the actual venues in the programme. DocLisboa’s 2026 listing names four Lisbon venues. Visit Portugal describes Porto/Post/Doc as distributed across several Porto venues. A single-city event can still require separate travel between screening locations.
Rank #4
Compare the address of the venue with the address shown on the ticket page, since a festival may use a venue’s name while the session takes place in a particular room or building. If you plan consecutive screenings, allow a buffer for queues, transport and finding the next entrance.
Date certainty
Published annual dates help you reserve time, but they do not tell you which film plays on which day. Keep the festival dates and the individual session schedule as separate pieces of information. Reconfirm both when the current programme is released or updated.
Admission and access
Compare the ticket type offered for the exact session, the sales channel, any discount category, subtitle information and accessibility notes. Venue rules can differ inside one festival. DocLisboa’s 2025 information specifically showed that Cinemateca Portuguesa had a different standard ticket price from other venues, illustrating why a festival-wide assumption can be wrong.
Travel cost and planning effort
The calendar sources do not establish a complete travel budget, so calculate transport and accommodation separately for the city and dates you choose. If you are travelling for Porto/Post/Doc, DocLisboa, Vista Curta or Curtas Vila do Conde, compare the cost of attending one session with the cost of a day or multi-day visit. Accommodation can be a practical secondary consideration for a distant festival, but availability, prices and any partner arrangements must be checked independently rather than assumed from the event listing.
Tickets, prices and subtitles: what can and cannot be carried forward
The only concrete prices in the official material are historical DocLisboa 2025 examples: a €5.00 standard ticket and a €3.20 Cinemateca Portuguesa standard ticket. They describe that edition and should not be used as 2026 price guidance. The same limitation applies to purchase methods, discount rules and subtitle statements.
When the current edition opens sales, read the ticket page for:

Searching in Portuguese often exposes programme pages that an English-only query misses. Combine one of these phrases with a city name such as Lisboa, Porto, Viseu or Vila do Conde:
- cinema documental — documentary cinema
- agenda de cinema — cinema listings
- programação — programme
- sessões — screenings
- festivais de cinema — film festivals
- bilhetes — tickets
For example, “cinema documental Porto” can lead you to documentary-focused pages, while “programação sessões Viseu” is useful when checking a regional festival’s schedule. Once you find a result, verify that it is an official organiser, venue, municipality or national cultural listing before relying on it.
You can make a search more precise by adding a year, month or venue name: “programação DocLisboa 2026,” “bilhetes cinema documental Lisboa” or “sessões Curtas Vila do Conde.” Portuguese accents are useful but not always required by a search engine; try both the accented and unaccented form if a page is difficult to find.

Common mistakes and the safer alternative
- Using an old programme: A historical Cinemateca page or last year’s festival page may remain online. Follow the site’s route to the current schedule.
- Assuming a broad festival is documentary-only: Vista Curta and Curtas Vila do Conde are broader film events. Check individual titles and sections.
- Treating festival dates as session dates: The opening and closing dates do not identify a film’s screening day. Use the detailed programme.
- Assuming one ticket rule applies everywhere: Multi-venue festivals can have venue-specific prices and sales channels. Read the exact ticket instructions.
- Promising subtitles without checking: Subtitle availability is edition- and film-specific. Look for the language attached to the session.
- Planning from a calendar entry alone: The ICA Agenda is excellent for discovery, but the organiser’s page controls the final details.
- Expecting a complete national count: No reliable official total of all documentary screenings in Portugal is established by these calendars. Use them to find events, not to claim that the list is exhaustive.
- Buying equipment or printed guides as a substitute for listings: A projector, screen accessory, printed catalogue or travel guide does not identify the current screening time. Official online calendars and programme pages are the useful core tools for this search.
- Confusing a related activity with a screening: Festivals may list discussions, retrospectives or special events alongside films. Check the item type and admission rule.
Useful official pages to bookmark
- ICA Agenda — national discovery calendar.
- Portugal Film Commission Agenda — an additional film-event calendar to check alongside ICA.
- Porto/Post/Doc — official documentary festival information.
- Visit Portugal: Porto/Post/Doc — 2026 event listing and description.
- Cinemateca Portuguesa Programação — programme information; navigate to the current schedule.
- Curtas Vila do Conde — programme and catalogue routes.

Bookmark the calendar and the festival page separately. The calendar helps you discover an event; the festival page is where programme revisions, ticket releases and venue notices are most likely to appear.
A practical checklist before leaving for a screening
- Confirm that the title is in the current programme, not only in an archive or catalogue.
- Check the exact date, start time and venue.
- Open the venue map or address supplied by the organiser.
- Buy the correct ticket or confirm the pass-entry procedure.
- Check subtitle language and any accessibility information for that session.
- Recheck the programme for changes shortly before departure.
If you are attending more than one session, repeat the checklist for every film. Save the ticket confirmation, venue address and programme link on your phone, and keep a note of the organiser’s contact route in case a session changes.
Following this sequence gives you a dependable route from a nationwide discovery calendar to a verified documentary screening, while allowing for regional festivals and the edition-by-edition changes that affect prices, subtitles, venues and schedules.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best place to begin searching for documentary screenings in Portugal?
Start with the Instituto do Cinema e do Audiovisual (ICA) Agenda for a nationwide scan. Open each listing’s “Mais informações” link, then confirm the current programme, venue, tickets and access details on the organiser’s page.
Which Portuguese festivals are most clearly documentary-focused?
Porto/Post/Doc in Porto describes its focus as documentary and contemporary documentary practices. DocLisboa is also a documentary festival; its 2026 ICA listing gives dates of 15–25 October and four Lisbon venues.
Are Vista Curta and Curtas Vila do Conde documentary festivals?
No. Vista Curta is a short-film festival, and Curtas Vila do Conde is a broad international film festival. Both may include documentaries, but you must check the current programme or catalogue for individual documentary titles.
How much do documentary screening tickets cost?
The documented DocLisboa 2025 examples were €5.00 standard and €3.20 standard at Cinemateca Portuguesa. Those are historical edition-specific prices, not guidance for 2026 or other festivals. Check the current ticket page.
Can I assume films in Portugal have English subtitles?
No. DocLisboa stated that its 2025 edition had Portuguese and English subtitles, but that does not establish subtitle coverage for 2026, another festival or every film. Check the language listed for the specific session.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteHow can I avoid arriving at the wrong venue?
Record the exact venue attached to the film and session in the current programme. DocLisboa lists four Lisbon venues, and Porto/Post/Doc uses several Porto venues, so a festival name or city alone is not enough.
The Bottom Line
Use the ICA Agenda to discover events across Portugal, then move to the organiser’s live programme for the film, session, venue, ticket, subtitle and accessibility details. For documentary-first choices, begin with DocLisboa and Porto/Post/Doc; for regional options, check documentary selections within Vista Curta and Curtas Vila do Conde. Reconfirm everything because dates, prices and programmes can change by edition.
