To find a particular challenged book, first verify its reported challenge history in the American Library Association (ALA) Office for Intellectual Freedom (OIF) Censorship Search Portal. Then search your public library catalog by exact title and author, check every format and branch, and ask library staff about holds, interlibrary loan, or access restrictions. If you want to buy a copy, use Bookshop.org’s bookstore locator or its Banned and Challenged Books collection, then contact the independent shop to confirm stock or place an order. National challenge records identify reported censorship attempts; they do not prove that a specific library branch lacks a title or that a bookstore has one on its shelf.
Understand what “challenged” and “banned” mean
A challenge is an attempt to remove or restrict access to a book because someone objects to its content. The challenge may end with the book retained exactly as it was, moved or otherwise restricted, or withdrawn. ALA’s examples of restrictions include moving a title to an older age section, adding a warning or rating, removing it from an online catalog, taking it off freely browsable shelves, or requiring parental permission.
ALA uses banned more narrowly: a book is banned when it is entirely removed from a collection after a formal or informal challenge. Routine collection weeding, a damaged copy, or a temporary pause while staff review a complaint is not automatically a ban. Therefore, seeing a title in a national “banned books” list does not tell you what happened at your local library.
Judith Krug, the first director of ALA’s Office for Intellectual Freedom, explained why these disputes attract attention: “People don’t challenge materials that don’t say something to the reader.” That observation describes the cultural stakes, but it does not replace checking a current catalog record or a bookseller’s inventory.

Use ALA to confirm a reported challenge
Search the Censorship Search Portal
- Open the ALA OIF Censorship Search Portal.
- Enter the exact title. If the title is common or produces no result, search the author’s name and try alternate spellings.
- Read the record for the year, location, stated objection, and outcome when those details are available. The portal is a U.S. database assembled from reports sent to OIF, media accounts, and public records.
- Treat the record as evidence of a reported attempt to censor, not as proof that every library removed the book.
A record can describe a school, public library, prison library, or another institution. Note the institution and jurisdiction before assuming that the same action occurred in your town.
Use annual lists as discovery tools
ALA’s Banned & Challenged Books hub links to annual lists and background information. These lists are useful when you are looking for books by theme, author, or period, or when you remember only that a title appeared in recent coverage. They are not circulation catalogs and do not show current holdings.
For a broader explanation of how to locate and document titles, consult ALA’s Researching Banned or Challenged Books guide. Use the title and author from any list as your starting point, then verify availability locally.
Check your public library step by step
Search the catalog precisely
- Go to your public library system’s catalog rather than relying on a general web search.
- Search the exact title and author. Try the author’s surname alone if the title search fails, and check alternate editions or translations.
- Open each record and identify the format: print book, ebook, audiobook, large print, or another edition.
- Check the status of each copy. A record may show available, checked out, on hold, in processing, or held at another branch.
- Use the catalog’s request, hold, or branch-transfer function when it is offered. If the system provides interlibrary loan, submit a request for a copy outside the network.
Catalog labels differ by system. “Available” may mean that a copy is on a shelf at one branch, while “in transit” or “processing” means it cannot be collected immediately. Open the item details and branch map instead of assuming that a title-level result represents a copy near you.
Ask staff when a result is missing or restricted
A missing search result does not establish that a book was banned. A title may be absent because the library never purchased it, all copies were discarded or lost, the catalog record is limited to another format, or the system is temporarily updating records. ALA also notes that a restriction can involve removing a title from the online catalog or from open stacks, so catalog absence can have several explanations.

Contact a librarian with the exact title, author, and publication format you want. Ask:
- Does the system’s catalog include this format and every branch?
- Is the title under review, restricted to staff-mediated requests, or temporarily unavailable?
- Can staff place a hold, request a branch transfer, or arrange interlibrary loan?
- Is there an ebook or audiobook license even if no print copy appears?
Staff can tell you what the local collection policy and current records show. They cannot infer a national outcome from an ALA list, and a national record cannot establish a branch’s present holdings.
Check more than one library system
If your city or county system has no copy, search neighboring public-library systems, a regional consortium, or a university library’s public-access rules. Each system makes its own acquisition, licensing, and access decisions. Confirm whether you may obtain a card, use reciprocal borrowing, or request a copy through interlibrary loan before traveling.

Use Books Unbanned for eligible digital access
For U.S. readers ages 13 through 21, Brooklyn Public Library says its Books Unbanned eCard provides access to its ebooks and audiobooks, including frequently challenged titles. The library’s card-application information explains the current eligibility and application terms.
- Read the current eligibility requirements before applying; the offer is intended for readers 13–21 in the United States.
- Apply through the instructions on Brooklyn Public Library’s Books Unbanned page.
- Use the Brooklyn Public Library website or the Libby app to search for the title.
- Check the format and lending status. Some records marked “Always Available Online” can be checked out without a waiting list, while other titles may have a queue or licensing limit.
This route confirms access through that library’s digital collection, not ownership of a print copy at your local branch. Eligibility, titles, lending limits, and application rules can change, so use the current library pages rather than an old social-media post.

Find an independent bookstore
Locate a participating shop
Open Bookshop.org’s bookstore locator and search by city, state, or ZIP code. The locator identifies participating independent bookstores and lets you choose a local shop for a purchase so that the shop receives the associated profit.
You can also browse Bookshop.org’s Banned and Challenged Books collection. Use the collection to discover editions and titles, then open the listing details carefully: title, author, publisher, format, and publication date may differ among editions.
Confirm shelf stock before you go
The locator and collection do not prove that a particular store has a copy on hand. Call, email, or use the store’s own ordering form with the ISBN or complete edition details. Ask whether the copy is currently in stock, whether it can be ordered, how long ordering is expected to take, and whether the store can hold it for pickup.
If you need a specific edition—such as hardcover, large print, a particular translation, or an audiobook on physical media—state that explicitly. A store may have the title but not the format you want. Inventory changes quickly, so reconfirm before traveling.
Compare the practical routes
| Route | What it can confirm | Eligibility or cost | Formats and waiting time | What it cannot confirm |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Local public-library catalog | Whether the searched system lists copies, formats, branches, and current statuses | Library-card and local-policy requirements apply; no universal price or policy is stated | Print, ebook, audiobook, and other formats when the system owns or licenses them; holds and transfers may involve a wait | Why a missing record is absent until staff verify the reason |
| Interlibrary loan or regional borrowing | Whether another participating library can supply the title | Available only where the local system offers the service; rules vary | Often depends on a lending library’s availability and loan period | Permanent ownership by your local branch |
| Books Unbanned eCard | Digital access through Brooklyn Public Library’s program | U.S. readers ages 13–21 must meet the program’s current terms | Ebooks and audiobooks; some “Always Available Online” titles have no wait, while others may queue | Local print holdings or access for people outside the eligibility rules |
| Independent bookstore | Stock or an order only after the shop confirms it | Purchase price and shipping depend on the edition and store | Usually print editions; ordering time and shelf stock are shop-specific | Inventory at a nearby shop based only on an online locator or collection page |
| ALA search and annual lists | A reported U.S. challenge and related context | Open discovery resource | No lending or purchasing function | Current availability at any library or bookstore |
Interpret ALA’s national numbers carefully
ALA’s figures describe reported activity, not a complete census of every challenge in the United States. OIF says its data comes from reports and news coverage, and many challenges never reach those channels. A title can therefore be absent from the database even if a local complaint occurred.

In data released in 2026 about 2025, ALA reported 5,668 books banned from libraries, which it said represented 66% of the total challenged. Attribute that figure to the ALA Office for Intellectual Freedom’s reported 2025 data. It should not be presented as a count of every U.S. library system or every challenge. The OIF portal also states that 92% of reported attempts to censor books in 2025 were made by government decision makers and pressure groups; that statistic describes the reported attempts in the portal’s scope, not all objections nationwide.

The ALA portal lists a challenge, but the library has the book
That is entirely possible. A challenge can end with retention, or it may have occurred at a different institution or in a different year. Record the local catalog status and the date you checked it; the national entry and local availability answer different questions.
The title is not in the catalog
Try the author search, alternate formats, neighboring systems, and a direct question to library staff. Ask whether the title is under review or available only through a staff request, but also consider ordinary explanations such as non-purchase, withdrawal of a damaged copy, or an incomplete format record.

The catalog shows a copy, but you cannot find it on the shelf
Check the branch and status details. A copy marked on hold, in transit, processing, or recently returned may not be shelved. Ask the service desk to locate it or place a hold rather than concluding that access has been removed.
The bookstore page shows the title, but the store says it is unavailable
Online listings can represent an orderable edition rather than a copy physically in the shop. Ask for the ISBN, request an order, and confirm the expected arrival date. If the edition is out of print, ask whether the bookseller can identify another edition or a used copy.
You are outside the Books Unbanned age range
Use your local library, another participating library, or a bookstore. The Books Unbanned eCard’s stated eligibility is for U.S. readers ages 13–21, so it is not a general substitute for local borrowing or purchasing.
A quick checklist for finding one specific title
- Write down the exact title, author, desired format, and edition or ISBN if relevant.
- Search the ALA OIF portal and review the annual lists to understand the reported challenge history.
- Search your library catalog by title and author; inspect every format, branch, and status.
- Place a hold, request a transfer, or use interlibrary loan if the system offers those options.
- Ask library staff about a missing record, review status, catalog restriction, or alternate format.
- If eligible, apply for Books Unbanned and search through the library website or Libby.
- Use Bookshop.org’s locator or collection to identify an independent shop.
- Contact the shop with the exact edition details and confirm stock or ordering before visiting.
For deeper background
ALA Editions’ Books Under Fire: A Hit List of Banned and Challenged Children’s Books, Second Edition by Pat R. Scales (2021) is a 232-page reference with summaries, challenge reports, discussion points, links, and further reading. The ALA Store description presents it as background for librarians, educators, and researchers, not as a live catalog or current title-status database.
The dependable division of labor is simple: ALA helps you understand whether a challenge has been reported; a library catalog and its staff establish local borrowing options; a bookstore confirms purchase availability. No national list or online discovery page can establish a particular branch’s or shop’s current holdings without that local check.
