How to Find a Blood Donation Center Near You (US and England)

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To find a blood donation center near you, use a location-based finder, then contact the collecting organization to verify the address, hours, donation type, appointment, identification requirements, and your eligibility. In the United States, start with the AABB Blood Donation Site Locator, the American Red Cross drive search, or ADRP’s DonatingBlood.org finder. In England, use NHS Blood Donation’s booking service. Entering a state, ZIP code, or postcode is essential because centers and mobile drives change by area and date.

A search result is not the same thing as a confirmed appointment. A directory may show a center, a temporary drive, or an older schedule, while the collector’s own booking system has the current record. Treat the locator as the discovery step and the collecting organization as the final authority on where and when you can donate.

Choose the locator for your country

Blood collection is organized nationally and locally, so a directory that works in one country may not list facilities elsewhere. The options below are complementary rather than proof that one service is complete. Start with the service that covers your country, then cross-check a second listing when the first search is empty or unclear.

Service Geographic scope Results shown Booking and confirmation
AABB Blood Donation Site Locator United States Donation sites; mobile drives may also be available Discovery first. AABB advises calling ahead or visiting the center’s website to schedule and confirm eligibility.
American Red Cross search United States Blood drives searchable by ZIP code or sponsor code, plus center information Search and appointment management are available through its service and app; confirm the details shown for your selected drive.
ADRP DonatingBlood.org finder United States Fixed centers and mobile drives reported in the ZIP-code area Useful for discovery; contact the listed collector for current times, appointment rules, and eligibility.
NHS Blood Donation England Permanent donor centers and temporary community venues Online account and app booking, with a donor helpline. Try another date or location if no appointment appears.

These services answer slightly different questions. AABB is a broad US site locator; Red Cross is particularly useful when you are looking for a scheduled drive or have a sponsor code; ADRP helps distinguish a permanent center from a mobile listing. NHS Blood Donation is the England-specific booking route described here. None should be presented as a universally exhaustive global directory.

Find a US blood donation site step by step

1. Search the AABB locator

  1. Open the AABB Blood Donation Site Locator.
  2. Enter at least your US state or ZIP code. AABB describes this as the information needed to find a blood donation site near you.
  3. Review the returned locations and note whether each is a permanent site or a mobile opportunity.
  4. Open the collector’s own page or call before traveling. AABB specifically recommends confirming scheduling and eligibility in advance.

Use the full address rather than relying only on a center name. If several results appear, compare the actual travel distance, the date on which each site is operating, and the type of donation the collector says it accepts. A locator result is a lead, not an appointment confirmation. Addresses, opening hours, blood-component services, and available slots can change.

2. Check the American Red Cross search

  1. Search by ZIP code to find a blood drive in your area, or use a sponsor code when an employer, school, community group, or event has provided one.
  2. Compare the listed date, time, venue, and drive status.
  3. Use the Red Cross service or app to review drive information and manage an appointment when that option is offered.
  4. Recheck the booking immediately before leaving, especially for a mobile drive whose venue or schedule can change.

A sponsor code can be useful when the drive is organized for a particular workplace, school, or community group and is not obvious from a general ZIP search. If the code produces no result, ask the sponsor or the Red Cross whether the drive is still scheduled rather than assuming there is no local opportunity.

3. Cross-check with ADRP

  1. Enter your ZIP code in the DonatingBlood.org finder.
  2. Read the result type carefully. ADRP distinguishes fixed blood-center listings from mobile drives reported in the ZIP-code area.
  3. Contact the organization named in the listing to verify that it is accepting donors on the displayed date.

Checking more than one US finder can reveal a community drive that another directory does not display. A result in a neighboring ZIP code may still be the closest option if a mobile host is just outside your area. None of these services is established as universally exhaustive, so an empty result is a reason to broaden the search, not proof that no donation site exists nearby.

Book in England through NHS Blood Donation

NHS Blood Donation’s service is the relevant national route for readers in England. Use its website or app to create or access an account, search available appointments, and book a date. Its venue information separates permanent donor centers from temporary community venues, so read the location type before planning travel.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Enter your postcode or choose a location in the NHS Blood Donation booking service.
  2. Review the available venues and dates, including community sessions as well as permanent centers.
  3. Select a time and complete the booking steps in your account or app.
  4. If no suitable appointment appears, try another date or location. NHS guidance notes that booking further ahead generally gives you more choice.
  5. Use the donor helpline if the online service cannot answer a venue or booking question.

Check whether the result is a permanent donor center or a temporary community venue. A community venue may have different entrances, parking, or access arrangements from the building’s usual public entrance. Save the appointment details in your account and check them again close to the visit.

This England-specific process should not be treated as a UK-wide instruction. Readers in Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, or another country should use their own national blood service.

Eldoncard Blood Typing Kit, 2 Test Pack
  • What is the EldonCard: You can learn your blood type in just a couple of minutes using the Eldon Blood Typing Kit. The EldonCard is used for ABO-and RHD blood grouping. The card allows individuals to understand what their blood group is. The Blood Typing cards are accurate and can be used in the home and once completed the card can be covered for future reference
  • Why do I need the EldonCard: Your blood type is inherited from your parents and determined by the presence or absence of certain antigens and antibodies. The EldonCard is made of a special type of plastic upon which dried antibody formulations are placed. The EldonCard at home test kit is a reliable, durable, and flexible point-of-care blood typing system
  • How EldonCard Works: The type of antigen you have tells us what your blood type is. While there are more than 20 blood-type systems, A, B, O and Rh (Rhesus) factors are by far the most important types. The blood is drawn by using a single-use safety lancet, which prevents accidental piercing by anyone picking up the lancet after it has been used. This home medical test is an essential part of blood testing supplies
  • EldonCard Accuracy: The EldonCard is extremely accurate. It has been tested against the standard blood typing procedure using directly agglutinating antibodies. Tests have been performed at several laboratories in different countries and the results are in-line with laboratory-based tests
  • Where and Who can use it: EldonCard health test kit is used by hospitals, blood banks, blood centers, where it can be used for general blood typing and for bedside testing. Given the flexibility, durability and accuracy of the EldonCard, it can be used outside hospitals and clinic environments. Often it is used within practitioner clinics, humanitarian settings, remote locations, battlefields, classrooms, private homes, and in many emergency situations calling for a speedy and reliable test

Verify a result before you travel

After finding a likely center or drive, use the collector’s direct booking channel. Have the following questions ready:

  • Is the address and entrance still correct?
  • What are the donor hours on the day you want to visit?
  • Is the session accepting whole-blood donations, plasma, platelets, or another component?
  • Do you need an appointment, or are walk-ins accepted?
  • What identification must you bring?
  • Are there age, weight, health, medication, travel, or donation-interval requirements that apply to you?
  • Has the session been moved, cancelled, or filled since the listing was published?
  • Is there a separate check-in time from the appointment time?
  • Are there instructions for parking, public transport, building access, or a host-site entrance?

AABB’s general guidance recommends asking about requirements and identification when booking. Keep the confirmation message, reference number, and collector’s phone number until the donation is complete. If you are comparing two sites, ask both organizations the same questions; a policy or appointment process at one collector does not automatically apply at another.

Understand eligibility without guessing

There is no single guarantee that a person will be accepted at every center. In the United States, collectors work under US Food and Drug Administration requirements, AABB Standards, and local policies; a center’s medical director may impose a stricter policy. Your circumstances and the collector’s rules both matter.

Age, weight, identification, recent travel, medicines, health conditions, pregnancy-related circumstances, tattoos or piercings, and the interval since a previous donation can affect screening. General information from a directory is not a personal clearance. Ask the chosen collector for the current rule before assuming you qualify, and answer the screening questions accurately at the appointment.

Do not cancel a needed appointment merely because an online page is unclear. Call the center and ask what documentation or waiting period applies to your situation. The staff member who performs the screening, under that organization’s medical direction, makes the final donation decision. If one organization says a circumstance requires a delay, do not assume another collector will apply an identical timetable; confirm directly with the site you plan to use.

Fixed centers versus mobile blood drives

Fixed donation centers

A fixed center operates at a permanent address and usually has recurring hours. It may offer more predictable facilities and a wider range of donation types, but it can be farther away than a community event. Verify the exact entrance and parking instructions because a large building may have a separate donor reception area.

  • Perfect for those interested in Dr. Peter D'Adamo's Blood Type Diet
  • Read instructions carefully before you begin for accurate results
  • Each Blood Typing Kit is good for one use (enough for 1 test for a single individual)

A fixed site can be practical when you expect to donate repeatedly and want one familiar location. Even then, recurring hours do not guarantee that every donation type is available every day. Check the appointment calendar or call before assuming that a center open for one service is accepting the component you want to give.

Mobile or community drives

A mobile drive is held temporarily at a school, workplace, faith building, community hall, or other host site. It can be closer on a particular day, but the opportunity disappears when the session ends. ADRP labels fixed and mobile results, and AABB notes that mobile drives may be available. Confirm the host address, check-in time, accessibility, and cancellation status before setting out.

Mobile listings can be filed under the host site’s ZIP code rather than your home ZIP code. Read the complete venue name and street address, not just the town. If the listing names a sponsor or host, that organization may be able to confirm the building entrance, but the blood collector remains the source for appointment and eligibility questions.

How to decide

  • Choose a fixed center when you need a recurring location, a specific component donation, or a schedule that is easier to predict.
  • Choose a mobile drive when its date and venue are convenient and the collector confirms that it accepts the donation type you want to give.
  • Keep both options in your search when the first location has no appointment.
  • Prefer the option whose collector can confirm the current address, appointment, and eligibility rules, even if it is not the shortest route.

What to bring and what to do on appointment day

The collecting organization’s instructions take priority, but a short preparation checklist prevents avoidable delays:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Bring the identification requested when you booked, plus your appointment confirmation or reference number.
  • Allow time for registration, health-history questions, screening, the donation itself, and the post-donation recovery period.
  • Tell staff about relevant medicines, recent illness, travel, procedures, or prior donation reactions rather than deciding yourself that they do not matter.
  • Follow the center’s instructions about eating, drinking, and activity before and after donation.
  • Ask staff what to do if you feel unwell during or after the donation.

For a mobile venue, check whether the event has a different entrance, parking arrangement, or accessibility route from the host organization’s normal address. Keep your phone available for a collector’s cancellation or relocation message. If you cannot attend, use the collector’s service to change or cancel the appointment so the time can be offered to another donor.

When no nearby appointment appears

Expand the search area

Try a neighboring ZIP code, another town, or a permanent center instead of searching only the first radius. A mobile drive may be listed under the host site’s ZIP code rather than your own. Searching the state or a larger region can also reveal a collector that does not appear in a narrow local query.

Change the date or donation type

Search several days and, where the service allows it, check whether whole blood, plasma, or platelet appointments have different availability. Do not book a component type unless the collector confirms that you are eligible for it. A calendar with no whole-blood slot is not necessarily evidence that every type of donation is unavailable.

Call the collector

Phone staff can explain whether a session is full, whether a cancellation list exists, and when the next drive will be posted. They can also resolve questions that a directory cannot, such as identification or medical-screening rules. Ask when to check back if the next schedule has not yet been released.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check again later

Appointment inventories change as drives are added, cancelled, or filled. NHS Blood Donation specifically advises trying another date or location and booking further ahead for more choice; the same practical approach can help when using US services, but each collector controls its own schedule. Recheck the confirmation after any change rather than relying on an old email or saved search result.

Why donating promptly matters

A 2026 joint statement from AABB, America’s Blood Centers, and the American Red Cross says that, in the United States, more than 16 million units of blood and blood products are transfused annually and more than 45,000 units are needed daily. The statement also says blood can take up to three days to be tested, processed, and made available for patients. In its words, “Blood can take up to three days to be tested, processed and made available for patients, so it’s the blood already on the shelves that helps save lives in an emergency.”

Those figures explain why a confirmed appointment at a functioning collection site is more useful than simply saving a directory result for later. They do not change the screening rules or guarantee acceptance; they are a reminder to use the live booking information and keep an appointment when you are able to donate.

Common search problems and fixes

Problem Likely reason Action
No results for your ZIP code The service may not list every collector, or a drive may be filed under a host location. Try a nearby ZIP code, another finder, and a broader state or regional search.
A listed drive has no times Appointments may be full, not yet released, or temporarily offline. Call the collector, check another date, and look for a permanent center.
The address looks different from the venue name Mobile drives use a host building and may have a separate donor entrance. Confirm the street address, entrance, parking, and accessibility route directly.
You are unsure whether you can donate Eligibility depends on current rules and individual circumstances. Ask the collecting organization; do not rely on a generic online checklist as a final decision.
Your appointment disappears The session may have been cancelled, moved, or changed. Check the collector’s message or app and contact the site before traveling.
A center appears open but has no suitable donation type Services and appointment inventories can differ by site and day. Ask which components the site is collecting and search another date or center.
You have a sponsor code but no matching drive The code may be tied to a particular event or its schedule may have changed. Confirm the code and event with the sponsor or collecting organization.

A quick decision path

  1. Identify your country and, if applicable, state or region.
  2. Enter your ZIP code or postcode into the appropriate national or regional finder.
  3. Search both permanent centers and mobile drives.
  4. Compare distance, date, donation type, and appointment availability.
  5. Open the collector’s own booking page or call to verify the details.
  6. Ask your eligibility and identification questions before leaving home.
  7. Save the confirmation and recheck for last-minute changes.

The practical answer is therefore two-stage: use a location-aware finder to discover nearby possibilities, then rely on the collecting organization for the live appointment and eligibility decision.

Frequently Asked Questions

What information do I need to find a blood donation center near me?

Use your US state or ZIP code, or your England postcode. A location is needed because results differ by area and because a mobile drive may be listed under its host site’s ZIP code.

Which US blood donation locator should I use first?

AABB’s Blood Donation Site Locator, the American Red Cross search, and ADRP’s DonatingBlood.org finder are useful starting points. They are complementary, so checking more than one can reveal different fixed centers or mobile drives.

Does finding a listing mean I have an appointment?

No. Confirm the current address, hours, donation type, appointment status, identification requirements, and eligibility with the collecting organization. A directory result is only a lead.

How can I tell whether a result is a mobile blood drive?

ADRP distinguishes fixed centers from mobile drives, and AABB notes that mobile drives may be available. Read the full venue and address, then confirm the host entrance, parking, check-in time, and cancellation status.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I do if no appointment is available?

Try another date or location, expand the ZIP-code search, check a permanent center, and call the collector about cancellations or the next schedule. NHS Blood Donation specifically recommends trying another date or location and booking further ahead for more choice.

Can an online eligibility checklist tell me whether I can donate?

Not definitively. US collectors follow FDA requirements, AABB Standards, and local policies, and a medical director may set stricter rules. Ask the chosen collector about age, weight, identification, health, medicines, travel, pregnancy-related circumstances, tattoos or piercings, and donation intervals.

Is NHS Blood Donation’s booking process for all of the UK?

The process described here is for England. Readers in Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, or another country should use the blood service that covers their location.

What should I bring to the appointment?

Bring the identification requested when booking and your confirmation or reference number. Follow the collector’s instructions and tell staff about relevant medicines, illness, travel, procedures, or previous donation reactions.
