On a Mac, the Music app exports a playlist or the whole library as XML, and can export playlist song information as text. On Windows, Apple documents these export commands for iTunes—not for the current Apple Music app. Choose the method that matches what you need to preserve.
Choose the right export method
| Your goal | Best starting point | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Keep a record of a whole library and its playlists | Music on Mac: File > Library > Export Library | An XML description of library and playlist information, not audio files. Apple’s Mac guide |
| Save one playlist for another compatible library | Music on Mac or iTunes for Windows: Export Playlist as XML | Playlist information; the destination needs matching songs for a complete playlist. Apple’s Mac guide and iTunes for PC guide |
| Make a readable song list | Music on Mac: Export Playlist as a text file | Song information suitable for reading or spreadsheet cleanup; inspect the output before treating it as a clean CSV. Apple’s Mac guide |
| Move playlists to Spotify or another streaming service | A playlist-transfer service | Track matches in the destination service; matches and availability are not guaranteed. |
| Back up music files you own | Copy the actual audio files and library database separately | Your files and, if included, a separate record of library organization. An XML export alone is not a media backup. |
| See the same Apple Music library on your devices | Sync Library | Cloud synchronization, not an independent export or backup. Apple’s Sync Library guidance |
If you want ordinary MP3 or AAC files from Apple Music subscription downloads, none of these export methods does that. Apple says subscription downloads cannot be manually transferred to another device as ordinary files. Apple’s iTunes download guidance
Prepare the library before exporting
- Open the library you intend to preserve. Sign in with the Apple Account associated with it and check that the expected playlists and songs appear.
- Let Sync Library finish updating, if you use it. Sync Library requires an Apple Music or iTunes Match subscription. It makes library items available across devices; Apple warns it is not a backup service. Apple Support
- Back up owned local files separately. Copy the folders that contain personal imports or eligible purchased files, rather than relying on playlist XML to preserve audio.
- Keep the source library unchanged until you verify the export. Save the exported file somewhere you can find it, then make another copy on external or cloud storage.
- Choose the output for the job. XML is more useful for compatible library applications; text is easier to read and review manually.
Export the whole library on a Mac
Use the Music app’s library export when you want a broad record of library and playlist information.
- Open Music on your Mac.
- Choose File > Library > Export Library.
- Choose a destination and save the XML file.
- Open or import the file in the application where you plan to use it, then confirm that the expected playlists and details are present.
- Keep an additional copy separate from the Mac.
Apple describes this as saving information about the library and playlists. It does not package the songs or music videos. Treat the XML as a structured library record, not a complete music backup. Apple Support: Save a copy of a playlist in Music on Mac

Export one playlist on a Mac
Save it as XML
- In Music, select the playlist in the sidebar.
- Choose File > Library > Export Playlist.
- Choose XML in the format menu.
- Select where to save the file and save it.
The XML contains playlist and track information, and may include local file references. Those references point to files at particular locations; they are not copies of the audio. If you import the playlist into another library, Apple says unavailable items are removed, so the destination needs matching songs for the playlist to be complete. Apple’s Mac guide
Save song information as text
- Select the playlist in Music.
- Choose File > Library > Export Playlist.
- Choose Text files in the format menu, then save the file.
- Open the result in a text editor or spreadsheet and check its fields and separators before sorting or sharing it.
Apple says the text export includes information from each song’s Info window, not just the columns currently visible in the library. The exact fields and formatting can vary by app version and export method, so verify the output rather than assuming it is a standardized CSV. Apple Support
Export with iTunes for Windows
These steps apply to iTunes for Windows. Do not assume the same commands are present in the current Apple Music app for Windows.
Export one playlist
- Open iTunes and select the playlist.
- Choose File > Library > Export Playlist.
- Choose XML as the format, then save the file.
Export library information
- In iTunes, choose File > Library > Export Library.
- Choose a destination and save the XML file.
Apple’s iTunes guide describes these exports as playlist or song information, not the actual songs or videos. Apple Support: Save a copy of your playlists in iTunes on PC

If you use Apple Music for Windows
Apple’s current Windows user guide covers library access, importing music, playlists, and Sync Library, but does not document the Mac- and iTunes-style XML export commands. That is not proof that every Windows installation lacks every export option; it means the documented iTunes steps should not be presented as instructions for the current Apple Music app. Apple Music User Guide for Windows
- If you have a Mac, use its Music app for XML or text export.
- If your library is managed in iTunes and its export commands are available, use the iTunes steps above.
- If your aim is to move playlists to another streaming service, consider a transfer service and review its matches.
- If you need a record rather than a transfer, make a readable list from the library information available to you and back up local files separately.
Move playlists to another streaming service
For a move to Spotify, YouTube Music, TIDAL, or another service, a transfer tool is often more practical than importing XML. The target service must find corresponding tracks in its own catalog; a similarly named recording may be a different edition, and a track may be unavailable in your region. Treat the result as a match list that needs checking, not a guaranteed duplicate of your Apple Music library.
- Save a separate record first. Export XML or text where available so you can compare the source playlist with the destination.
- Authorize the services through the transfer tool’s official sign-in flow. Review what access you are granting before proceeding.
- Test with one small playlist. Check whether the tool identifies the correct versions before queuing a larger transfer.
- Review unmatched and alternate tracks. Look for live versus studio recordings, remixes, explicit versus clean versions, duplicates, and region-specific availability.
- Check the finished destination playlist. Verify order and selections, then keep the Apple Music source intact until the transfer is satisfactory.
Examples of transfer tools
FreeYourMusic advertises transfers between Apple Music and services including Spotify, YouTube Music, TIDAL, Amazon Music, Deezer, and SoundCloud. Its site describes a free tier for small transfers; its App Store listing describes the first 600 songs as free. Availability and terms can change, so check the current offer before starting. FreeYourMusic says it uses official sign-in authorization and processes transfers on the user’s device; that is the vendor’s claim, not an independent security audit.
SongShift’s App Store listing describes support for Apple Music and services including Spotify, Amazon Music, TIDAL, YouTube, Qobuz, Napster, and Pandora, along with match review, batch transfers, monitoring, and playlist updates. Service support and paid features can change. Both tools transfer playlist or library information; neither turns Apple Music subscription tracks into transferable audio files.

Back up music files you own
Keep these categories distinct: Apple Music catalog tracks are subscription content; iTunes Store purchases may be downloadable to authorized devices; personal imports are files you store; and matched or uploaded tracks may behave differently under Sync Library. A library export does not replace a backup of files you own.
- Copy the folders containing your personal or purchased audio files to a separate drive or storage location.
- Save the Music or iTunes library database as well if ratings, play counts, or organization matter to you.
- Keep the XML export, and save a text list if you want a human-readable inventory.
- Test a sample of the copied files by opening or playing them from the backup location.
On Windows, imported files may remain in their original folders while the app keeps a reference to them. Moving an original file can therefore break playback. Apple Support: Import music from a computer to Apple Music on Windows
Troubleshoot incomplete exports and transfers
The export command is missing
- Check which app you opened: the documented Windows export steps are for iTunes, not necessarily the current Apple Music app.
- Confirm you are using a desktop app; the iPhone and iPad Music apps do not offer a native full-library XML, CSV, or text export workflow.
- Check that the intended library is loaded and that the selected playlist is visible.
An imported playlist is empty or missing songs
Apple says unavailable items are removed from an imported playlist. Confirm the destination library is the one you intend to use, add or import missing music where possible, and compare the result with your saved text list. If moving between streaming services, inspect the transfer tool’s unmatched-song and alternate-version results. Apple’s Mac guide
Local tracks show missing-file errors
The XML may contain paths to files on the original computer. Restore the music folder to its prior location, use the destination app’s locate or consolidate feature if available, or re-import the files. Apple notes that Windows imports can remain in their original locations, so moving those files may break playback. Apple Support

Smart Playlists behave differently
Apple’s Windows guide says Smart Playlist rules are retained in the cloud, while the rules are applied on the device or computer where the playlist is downloaded. An exported or synced playlist should not be treated as a guarantee that its dynamic rules will behave identically in another app or on every device. Apple Music User Guide for Windows
You plan to cancel Apple Music
Export or transfer playlist information before canceling. Apple’s iTunes documentation says downloaded Apple Music items remain on the computer after the subscription ends but cannot be played until it is renewed; that does not make those downloads ordinary, portable audio files. Apple Support
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Sync Library is not an export
Use Sync Library when you want access to the same Apple Music library across signed-in devices, not when you need a file to store, inspect, or import into another service. Apple requires an Apple Music or iTunes Match subscription for Sync Library and explicitly cautions that Apple Music is not a backup service. Apple Support: Use Sync Library with your Apple Music subscription
For scale, Apple’s Windows guide says Sync Library can hold up to 100,000 songs in the cloud, excluding iTunes Store purchases, with individual files limited to 200 MB. These are Sync Library limits, not export-file limits. Apple Music User Guide for Windows

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I export Apple Music songs to MP3?
No. Playlist and library exports contain information, not subscription audio files. Apple says Apple Music downloads cannot be manually transferred to another device as ordinary files. Apple Support
Can I export a full library from an iPhone or iPad?
Apple’s consumer Music apps on iPhone and iPad do not provide a native full-library XML, CSV, or text export workflow. Use a desktop export option or a transfer service, depending on your goal.
Can I import Apple Music XML directly into Spotify?
XML is intended for compatible library applications; it is not generally the easiest route for a streaming-service move. A transfer service can search Spotify’s catalog for matches, but you should review the results.
