To expand storage on a cloud server running a 24/7 stream, enlarge the provider-managed disk, then make sure the guest operating system and filesystem can use the added space. First confirm that storage capacity—not throughput, IOPS, latency, or a sharing requirement—is the problem. Take a recoverable backup before changing partitions or filesystems, and do not assume the stream can remain uninterrupted: downtime depends on the provider, disk, operating system, and configuration.

Check what is actually full

A cloud disk has at least two relevant layers: the size of the volume configured with the cloud provider, and the capacity recognized by the operating system’s partition and filesystem. Enlarging the first does not always enlarge the second. On Linux, df -h shows filesystem capacity and use; also inspect attached disks and provider metrics to identify whether the issue is a full filesystem or a performance bottleneck. Google’s troubleshooting guide describes this distinction: Troubleshoot full disks and disk resizing.

For a streaming workload, identify what the disk stores and how the application uses it: a growing local recording, a media library, cache or scratch data, or files accessed from another service. A larger volume can address insufficient capacity, but does not by itself establish that the stream will perform better. Google Cloud documents different scaling behavior for Persistent Disk and Hyperdisk, and actual performance can also depend on the VM and disk type. See Google Cloud disk types.

Choose storage that matches the workload

Before resizing, consider whether a larger block disk is the right fix. Block, file, and object storage are different interfaces, not interchangeable ways to add space to the same filesystem. Google Cloud’s guidance outlines these storage models: Design an optimal storage strategy for your cloud workload.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • Block storage: A VM-attached volume suits applications that expect a disk or filesystem. Compare capacity, throughput, IOPS, latency, supported VM types, and durability.
  • Managed file storage: Consider this if the application needs shared files across machines and supports the provider’s file protocols.
  • Object storage: Consider this for retained media or archives if the application can access objects through an API or client library rather than requiring a mounted block device.
  • Temporary local storage: Use only for data that can be regenerated. Google identifies Local SSD as temporary; data can be lost during VM lifecycle events. Use durable storage for recordings or other data that must survive a stop, restart, crash, or failure. See Google Cloud disk types.

Changing from block to file or object storage is an application and architecture change, not a routine disk resize. Weigh expected growth and retention against access pattern, sharing, availability, replication, and recurring cost.

Safe workflow for expanding a cloud disk

  1. Record the current configuration. Identify the provider, VM and machine type, disk name and type, zone or region, current and target capacity, operating system, partition table, filesystem, and whether the volume is a boot or data disk. Check current attachment and capacity limits for that provider and VM before choosing a target.
  2. Make a recovery plan. Confirm that you have a usable backup, snapshot, or other recovery path and know how to restore it. Google recommends taking a snapshot before partition or filesystem changes. Its documentation says increasing Persistent Disk size does not itself delete or modify disk data, but that is not a substitute for a backup: Modify the size of a Persistent Disk.
  3. Enlarge the provider-managed volume. Use the provider’s console, CLI, API, or infrastructure-as-code workflow and follow its current instructions for the disk type and whether it can be resized online. For Google Persistent Disk, enlargement is supported whether or not the disk is attached to a running VM; the disk cannot be reduced. These are Google-specific conditions, not a guarantee of zero downtime for other providers or configurations: Google Persistent Disk resizing.
  4. Make the operating system use the new space. Inspect the device, then extend the partition and filesystem—or the relevant volume manager—if they have not grown automatically. Some Google boot disks resize the root filesystem automatically, while some images and resized data disks require manual steps. Azure’s Windows guidance likewise treats managed-disk enlargement and Windows volume growth as separate operations. IBM Classic block storage instructions call for a host rescan followed by partition and filesystem resizing. Use the vendor’s exact procedure for your OS and layout: Google troubleshooting guide, Azure Windows VM disk expansion, and IBM Classic block storage expansion.
  5. Verify both layers. Confirm the provider reports the new disk size and the guest reports the expected filesystem capacity and free space. Check storage metrics and observe the streaming process after the change. Provider resizing procedures are not streaming-workload tests; validate service health in your own environment.
  6. Review cost and reversibility. Check the provider’s current billing for the selected capacity and performance tier. Expansion can increase recurring charges, and some providers do not allow shrinking. IBM documents prorated billing after expansion of Classic block volumes and says the allocation cannot be reduced afterward; verify current charges in your account.

Provider-specific limits and exceptions

Google Cloud Persistent Disk

Google’s Persistent Disk documentation lists a maximum of 64 TiB per volume and up to 257 TiB of attached Persistent Disk capacity for most VMs. For shared-core machine types, it lists a maximum of 16 Persistent Disk volumes and 3 TiB total Persistent Disk capacity. These limits apply to Google Cloud, not cloud disks generally; check the current documentation and the limits for your VM before planning: Persistent Disk documentation.

Google states, “You can’t reduce the size of a disk.” Plan the target carefully and snapshot before partition or filesystem work: Modify the size of a Persistent Disk.

Azure Windows VMs

Microsoft’s Windows VM guide lists a maximum OS disk size of 4,095 GiB and explains that MBR partitioning limits usable capacity to 2 TiB. It recommends using data disks for needs above that threshold unless the OS disk is converted to GPT. Online expansion support also depends on disk type, size, VM, and operation. These details are specific to the documented Azure Windows scenario, not a general Azure or Linux rule: Expand Virtual Hard Disks Attached to a Windows VM in Azure.

Storage Spaces Direct

Google warns that Storage Spaces Direct does not recognize added space from resizing underlying Persistent Disks and that data might become inaccessible. Its guidance points to adding servers or drives instead. If this is your topology, do not treat a disk resize as an ordinary expansion; follow the applicable Storage Spaces Direct procedure and validate the design first: Google disk resizing troubleshooting.

Common problems after a resize

  • The provider shows a larger disk, but free filesystem space is unchanged. The guest may not have rescanned the device, or the partition or filesystem may still have its old size. Inspect the device and follow the OS- and filesystem-specific expansion steps in the provider’s documentation.
  • The filesystem has space, but the stream still has storage-related problems. Capacity may not be the bottleneck. Check throughput, IOPS, latency, VM limits, and the application’s read/write pattern; adding capacity does not guarantee higher performance. Compare the provider’s disk types and performance model.
  • The resize operation is unavailable or fails. Recheck disk type, VM compatibility, size limits, attachment limits, and whether the provider supports the requested online operation. Provider rules differ; consult the current product guide rather than applying another provider’s command.
  • A very large disk is not fully usable on Azure Windows. Check whether the partition table is MBR; Microsoft documents a 2 TiB usable-size limit for MBR. Follow its Windows-specific guidance before selecting a disk layout.
  • Storage Spaces Direct no longer sees the expected capacity. Google specifically warns against resizing underlying Persistent Disks as the way to add space to this topology; added space might not be recognized and data might become inaccessible.
  • Data disappears after a VM lifecycle event. Verify whether the files were on ephemeral storage. Local SSD is temporary; move data that must persist to a durable storage option.
