The All-American World Championship at Derby Downs is normally reached by winning or qualifying through one of those local or rally programs rather than by signing up directly for the championship.
The practical sequence is straightforward, but the details matter: division age and size limits, car design, wheel and weight requirements, registration deadlines, inspection windows and transportation obligations all vary by program and season. The 2026 Akron local event illustrates the process and its timing, while the current International Soap Box Derby rule book controls the specifications you should use for a future entry.
What “entering Akron” actually means
The phrase can describe two different goals:
- Entering the Akron Area Local Soap Box Derby: You register for the local race, submit the required paperwork, bring a legal car to inspection and compete for the chance to represent Akron.
- Entering the All-American World Championship at Derby Downs: You first qualify through an approved local race or sanctioned rally. The championship is the destination for qualifying racers, not usually an open, first-come entry event.
The International Soap Box Derby says more than 80 race cities around the world qualify champions for its annual FirstEnergy All-American Soap Box Derby World Championship at Derby Downs in Akron, Ohio. A family outside the Akron area therefore starts by finding an approved race city or rally, then follows that program’s registration and qualification rules.
Check age, division and physical limits first
Akron’s official eligibility guidance says anyone between 7 and 20 years of age may compete. That broad range is divided into classes with different vehicles and limits. The age ranges and approximate driver limits below come from Akron’s current getting-started information; verify the exact limits in the current International Soap Box Derby rule book before buying parts or building a car.

| Division | Typical age range | Vehicle and driver limits | Important preparation note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stock | 7–13 | Approximate driver limit: 5 feet 3 inches and 125 pounds. Combined car-and-driver limit: 200 pounds. | Uses the Stock design. The Stock kit does not include Z-Glas racing wheels or weights. |
| Super Stock | Within the overall 7–20 eligibility range; confirm the current division rule | Current specifications should be checked in the current rule book. | Use only the current Super Stock design, dimensions and equipment requirements. |
| Masters (also called Scottie) | 10–20 | Approximate driver limit: 6 feet and 160 pounds. Combined car-and-driver limit: 255 pounds. | Uses a different lay-down car design from Stock. |
How to handle age at the boundary
Do not rely on a general statement such as “the racer is 13” or “the racer turns 14 this year.” The applicable event rules determine how age is treated for that race. Check the current rule book and the entry form for the season in which the racer will compete, especially when a birthday falls near the event date.
Why the combined weight matters
The combined limit includes the racer and the car, so a child who is under the approximate driver limit can still create a problem if the finished vehicle and permitted ballast exceed the class maximum. Weigh the assembled car, then weigh the racer with normal racing clothing and safety equipment. Leave enough margin for any approved hardware added before inspection.
Choose your route to the championship
Your location determines the most practical entry route, but both routes require a legal division-specific car and inspection.
| Entry route | Who uses it | Registration | Qualification outcome | Travel responsibility |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Akron Area Local Soap Box Derby | Families entering the Akron-area event | Local race form, racer and parent/guardian signatures, birth-certificate copy, racer information and payment | Akron local champions represent Akron in the All-American race | Follow the local event’s instructions for race-day arrival and inspection |
| Sanctioned rally | Racers who live outside the Akron local area or choose a rally schedule | Rally form; a separate form is required for each division entered during the same weekend | Rally programs provide a qualification path to the World Championship | If the racer qualifies, the family is responsible for transporting the racer and car to Akron |
Race cities and rally schedules change. Use the current International Soap Box Derby program information to identify an approved location, then obtain that event’s current form, fee schedule and inspection instructions.
Step-by-step: from interest to a legal entry
1. Confirm eligibility and pick one division
- Confirm that the racer will be within the 7–20 eligibility range for the event.
- Compare the racer’s age, height and weight with Stock, Super Stock and Masters guidance.
- Check the latest rule book for exact measurements, weight limits, approved components and any age-date definitions.
- Choose the division before buying a kit. A Stock body and a Masters lay-down car are not interchangeable designs.
If the racer could fit more than one class by age, use the division whose physical limits and car design can be met comfortably. Do not select a class solely because its age range is available; inspection is based on the complete car-and-driver combination.

2. Obtain the correct kit and parts
The official Akron getting-started instructions direct entrants to select a division, purchase the corresponding car kit and parts through the Soap Box Derby online store, and prepare the vehicle for an official race. For Stock, the kit includes the main components needed for the car but requires separately purchased Z-Glas racing wheels and owner-provided weights. The entry-level Stock kit is described as taking roughly four to six hours to assemble, assuming the builder has the required tools and follows the instructions.
That assembly estimate is not a promise that every entry will be ready in one evening. Allow additional time for reading the current rules, checking wheel installation, correcting alignment, painting or finishing if permitted, weighing the car and resolving inspection issues. Keep receipts and kit documentation in case the local or rally officials ask what components were used.
3. Build for the rule book, not just the kit instructions
- Use the kit intended for the selected division.
- Install only wheels, axles, hardware and ballast permitted for that class.
- For Stock, obtain the required Z-Glas racing wheels and plan the weight installation separately.
- For Masters, account for the lay-down configuration and the 255-pound combined limit.
- Check Super Stock dimensions and specifications in the current rule book before construction because the general Akron overview does not provide all current technical details.
- Measure the finished car and verify the racer-plus-car total before requesting inspection.
4. Find the event and obtain its current form
Akron-area entrants should use the current Akron Area Local Soap Box Derby announcement and registration form. Other families should locate a sanctioned rally or local race city through the International Soap Box Derby program. Confirm the event’s division list, entry deadline, payment method, inspection location, impoundment window and qualification terms before sending money or shipping a car.

5. Submit every required document
For the Akron local route, the published registration materials require the race form with racer and parent or guardian signatures, a copy of the racer’s birth certificate, racer information and payment. A missing signature or document can delay acceptance even when the car is complete.
Rally registration requires selecting the division and submitting a separate form for each division entered during the same weekend. If a racer is entering more than one class, do not assume one form covers all entries. Follow the rally’s instructions for documentation, payment and any additional releases.

6. Meet inspection and impoundment requirements
Inspection is the point at which officials verify that the car and racer meet the current rules. Have the car clean, assembled and accessible for measurement. Bring any documents or identification requested by the event, and arrive within the published inspection window. A car that has not passed inspection should not be treated as race-ready, even if it rolls correctly in a driveway test.
Some events also impound cars after inspection. Once impounded, the car may not be available for casual adjustments, so make alignment, wheel and ballast checks before handing it over. Ask the event officials how and when an impounded car can be collected or moved.
7. Race, then follow the qualification instructions
An Akron local champion represents Akron in the All-American race. Rally and other approved local programs provide their own qualifying positions and procedures. If the racer qualifies for the World Championship, read the acceptance and travel instructions immediately: the rally form states that the family is responsible for transporting both the racer and car to Akron.

|---|---|---|
| Race date | Saturday, June 6, 2026 | Plan to be available on the rain date as well. |

| Divisions | Stock, Super Stock and Masters | Choose the class before purchasing or assembling the car. |
Those dates have passed. They are useful as a model for the order of events, not as a current registration schedule. A future entrant should obtain the new season’s form because dates, deadlines, fees, inspection locations and included benefits can change.
What the car and equipment budget includes
The required equipment depends on the division. The clearest published package is the Stock entry.
| Item | Stock | Super Stock | Masters |
|---|---|---|---|
| Division-specific body or kit | Stock car kit | Use the current Super Stock design and approved kit or parts | Masters lay-down design |
| Racing wheels | Z-Glas wheels purchased separately from the kit | Verify current rule-book requirement | Verify current rule-book requirement |
| Weights or ballast | Provided by the owner and installed within the rules | Verify current rule-book allowance | Verify current rule-book allowance |
| Combined car-and-driver limit | 200 pounds | Check current rule book | 255 pounds |
| Published assembly estimate | Roughly 4–6 hours for the entry-level kit | Not stated | Not stated |
Do not treat the kit price as the entire cost of entering. The family may also need wheels, weights, tools, protective equipment, transportation, lodging and any event-specific fees. The 2026 Akron local fee was $50, but the published rally material does not state a universal rally entry price; obtain the amount from the individual rally.
Registration and inspection checklist
Use this checklist before the deadline:
- Racer is within the event’s age range.
- Division is selected and matches the racer’s age and physical limits.
- Correct kit and approved parts are on hand.
- Stock racers have Z-Glas wheels and permitted weights.
- Car is assembled according to the current rule book.
- Car-and-driver weight has been measured against the division limit.
- Local race form or rally form is complete.
- Racer and parent or guardian signatures are present where required.
- Birth-certificate copy and racer information are included for the local route.
- A separate rally form is prepared for each division entered during the same weekend.
- Payment is ready in the method and amount specified by the event.
- Inspection and impoundment location and time are on the calendar.
- Transportation plan covers the racer and car, including a possible trip to Akron after qualification.
Common mistakes and how to prevent them
Buying a car before choosing the division
A Stock kit is not a universal Soap Box Derby chassis. Select the class first, then purchase the matching kit and parts. If the racer’s age or size could place them near a boundary, resolve that question with the current rules before ordering.
Assuming the kit contains every race component
For Stock, Z-Glas wheels and weights are separate requirements. List every component before assembly and confirm that each one is permitted.

Using old specifications
Rules and schedules are season-specific. A car that met an earlier dimension or weight rule may require changes in a later season. Check the current rule book rather than relying on a previous racer’s setup or an old online discussion.
Missing the paperwork deadline
Construction can take only a few hours, but registration documents often have an earlier deadline. Work backward from the deadline: choose the division, order the kit, assemble and weigh the car, gather documents, then submit the form with enough time to correct an error.
Arriving outside the inspection window
Inspection and impoundment are scheduled activities, not informal drop-ins. The 2026 Akron local event published a two-hour Wednesday evening window. A late arrival may jeopardize the entry, so confirm any permitted late procedure directly with the event.
Planning only for the local race
If the goal is the World Championship, plan the second trip before racing. The rally form places responsibility for transporting a qualifying racer and car to Akron on the family. Budget time, vehicle space and protective transport for the car.
Suggested planning calendar
Several months before the race
- Confirm age eligibility and compare divisions.
- Read the current rule book and identify the correct car design.
- Locate the Akron local race or an approved rally.
- Record the registration deadline, inspection window and payment requirements.
After selecting the event
- Order the division-specific kit and any required wheels or ballast.
- Gather birth documentation and complete the racer information.
- Reserve transportation that can carry the assembled car without damaging it.
Two to four weeks before inspection
- Assemble the car and perform the rule-book measurements.
- Weigh the car and racer together.
- Check wheels, steering, brakes and fasteners for secure installation.
- Complete signatures and payment, then submit the form before the deadline.
Inspection week
- Perform a final cleaning and hardware check.
- Bring the car and required documents during the official inspection period.
- Ask officials how impoundment works and when the car can be retrieved.
After qualifying
- Read the qualification notice for the championship entry process.
- Confirm transportation and lodging in Akron.
- Keep the car in the condition required for the next inspection and race.
Questions to resolve with event officials
The following details are not universal and should come from the specific race or rally rather than an old form:
- How the event defines age for the current season.
- Current Super Stock dimensions and component rules.
- Whether a particular wheel, axle or ballast configuration is approved.
- Accepted payment methods and refund or transfer terms.
- Late-registration policy.
- Exact inspection, impoundment and car-release procedures.
- Number of championship qualifying positions.
- Deadlines and logistics after a racer qualifies for Akron.
For a first-time family, the safest approach is to treat the published form and current rule book as controlling documents, then ask the race director about any point that is unclear before purchasing equipment or traveling.
