For prerecorded lessons at 720p and 30 frames per second, encode the live feed as H.264 at YouTube’s recommended 8 Mbps, using CBR, a 2-second keyframe interval, and RTMPS when available. YouTube lists 3 Mbps as the minimum H.264 video bitrate for that live format. These settings encode the feed; your playout software must separately handle lesson playlists, looping, and recovery if the source or connection stops.
Recommended settings for a 720p30 live feed
YouTube’s live encoder guidance distinguishes settings by resolution and frame rate. For a 720p lesson whose intended live output is 30 fps, use these settings as a starting point:
| Setting | Recommendation |
|---|---|
| Resolution and frame rate | 1280×720 at 30 fps, when that matches the lesson source |
| Video codec | H.264 |
| Live video bitrate | 8 Mbps recommended; 3 Mbps minimum |
| Bitrate mode | CBR |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds |
| Ingest protocol | RTMP or RTMPS; YouTube recommends RTMPS |
| Audio | AAC or MP3 are supported over RTMP/RTMPS. Stereo AAC is a straightforward choice when supported; YouTube’s advanced settings list 128 Kbps stereo. |
These are YouTube’s recommendations, not a guarantee of uninterrupted operation. The bitrate figures are for video ingest; allow additional network capacity for audio and other traffic. Test the actual setup and monitor YouTube’s stream-health messages while live. See YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrate guidance.
When to consider AV1 or H.265
YouTube’s live bitrate table lists 6 Mbps recommended and 2 Mbps minimum for AV1 or H.265/HEVC at 720p30, compared with 8 Mbps recommended and 3 Mbps minimum for H.264. Use one of those alternatives only if the encoder and the rest of your workflow support it reliably; the lower listed bitrate alone does not make it the right choice for every setup. The same official settings page contains the codec figures.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Keep the lesson file settings separate from live settings
A file’s export bitrate and the bitrate sent to YouTube are settings for different stages. For an SDR 720p lesson file at standard frame rates, YouTube’s upload recommendations list MP4, H.264, progressive scan, and 5 Mbps. That 5 Mbps figure is for the uploaded or locally played file—not the live H.264 ingest recommendation of 8 Mbps at 720p30.
If you are exporting the lessons yourself, use the upload guidance for the files, then configure the encoder’s live output separately. The source’s frame rate is a sensible guide to output: avoid changing it without a reason, and use 720p30 when that matches the source and your intended stream. Details are in YouTube’s recommended upload encoding settings.

Set up a continuous lesson playlist
YouTube’s encoder and Live Control Room instructions explain how to send a feed to a stream. They do not prescribe a particular application for sequencing lesson files indefinitely. The encoder or playout software you choose must provide the playlist and repeat behavior you need, and you should verify how it handles a missing file, end of playlist, application restart, and connection interruption in that software’s own documentation.
- Prepare the lesson files. Use a consistent source format where practical. For SDR 720p files at standard frame rates, YouTube lists MP4, H.264, progressive scan, and 5 Mbps as its upload recommendations.
- Build the playlist in your playout or encoder software. Add lessons in the intended order, enable repeat or loop, and check whether the software advances cleanly between files. YouTube’s cited setup pages do not define these application-specific controls.
- Configure the live output. Choose 1280×720 at 30 fps when appropriate for the source, H.264 at 8 Mbps recommended (3 Mbps minimum), CBR, and a 2-second keyframe interval that does not exceed 4 seconds. Select RTMPS if available and configure a supported audio format.
- Connect to the YouTube stream. In YouTube Studio or Live Control Room, create or select the stream and copy its stream URL and stream key into the encoder. Treat the key as a credential: it allows an encoder to send a feed to your channel. YouTube’s live stream settings guide explains stream settings, keys, and scheduling.
- Preview and test before relying on the stream. Check a representative lesson with movement and speech, listen for clear audio, confirm the watch page is accessible, and inspect stream health and messages. YouTube recommends preparing in advance and continuously monitoring audio and video quality; see its live streaming tips.
- Plan for continuous operation. Your host, network connection, and playout software all need to keep producing a feed. Confirm how your chosen setup reconnects and resumes after an interruption; YouTube’s cited guidance does not promise automatic recovery or prescribe a 24/7 playlist tool.
What to check for a 24/7 stream
- End-of-playlist behavior: confirm the list repeats rather than stopping after the final lesson.
- File transitions: inspect the change between lessons for black frames, abrupt audio changes, or unwanted gaps.
- Network headroom: plan capacity above the video bitrate to accommodate audio and other traffic, then test the real connection.
- Recovery: determine what happens if the encoder, host, network, or YouTube connection drops, and whether the software resumes the playlist automatically.
- Stream key security: do not share the key casually; update the encoder if you change the key in YouTube.
- Rights and permissions: use lesson video, music, and other material you have the rights to stream. A continuous schedule does not grant permission to rebroadcast copyrighted material.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want uploaded lessons to keep looping on YouTube without leaving a computer running at home, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It keeps the stream running from the cloud, supports the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
