In India, the service is now branded JioHotstar following the February 2025 combination of JioCinema and Disney+ Hotstar services (JioStar announcement). Older guides may therefore show a different Hotstar interface.
Turn on subtitles on an Android phone or iPhone
- Open Hotstar or JioHotstar and start the movie, episode, or other video.
- Tap the picture once to reveal the playback controls.
- Tap the speech-bubble, CC, Subtitles, or Subtitles & Audio control. It may be inside a three-dot or More menu after an app redesign.
- Under Subtitles, select the language you want.
- Close the menu and resume playback. Text should appear over the video within a few seconds.
Changing the audio track is separate from selecting subtitles. A dubbed soundtrack does not automatically add captions.
Turn on subtitles in a desktop browser
- Open Hotstar or JioHotstar in a supported desktop browser and start playback.
- Move the pointer over the video so the controls appear.
- Select the speech-bubble, CC, Subtitles, or Subtitles & Audio icon.
- Choose a subtitle language, then click outside the menu or resume playback.
An older Hotstar walkthrough describes the control as a comments icon in the bottom-right of the player, followed by Subtitles and a language (historical interface guide). Treat that placement as a reference, not a guarantee of the current design.

Do not confuse a desktop browser with a browser on a phone or tablet. JioHotstar’s indexed Indian terms say mobile-browser streaming is not supported and may prompt you to install the app (JioHotstar terms).
Turn on subtitles on a smart TV or streaming device
- Start the title in the Hotstar/JioHotstar app.
- Press OK, Enter, Select, or the remote button that opens the playback timeline.
- Move across the controls to the speech-bubble, CC, Subtitles, or Audio & Subtitles icon.
- Open Subtitles, select a language, and return to playback.
Android TV/Google TV, Samsung Tizen, LG webOS, Apple TV, Roku, and set-top boxes can place these controls differently. Common TV labels include Subtitles, CC, and Audio & Subtitles, but app and device paths vary (TCL caption guidance).

A television’s global closed-caption setting is not a universal substitute for the in-app menu. If the player offers no usable control, look under the device’s Accessibility, Captions, Closed Captions, or Subtitles settings. Device styling may affect several apps, while subtitles rendered directly by Hotstar/JioHotstar may ignore it.
Change the subtitle language or turn subtitles off
Choose another language
- Open the subtitle menu during playback.
- Select the required language from the listed tracks.
Language choices can differ between movies, seasons, individual episodes, live programs, and countries. A subscription tier should not be assumed to unlock every language.

Disable subtitles
- Open the same playback control.
- Choose Off, None, or deselect the current language.
Turning captions off in a TV’s accessibility menu and turning off subtitles inside the app are separate actions on some devices.
Subtitles and closed captions are not always the same
Subtitles generally translate or transcribe spoken dialogue. Closed captions (CC) can also identify speakers, music, sound effects, and other important audio. Hotstar/JioHotstar may use either term or combine them as Subtitles & Audio. The title must supply the relevant track before it can be selected.

When the subtitle button is missing
The most common explanation is not a broken app: the particular movie, episode, live stream, or regional version may have no subtitle track. Streaming services normally show language choices only when the title provides them; Apple’s support documentation describes the same general behavior (Apple subtitle guidance).

- Tap, click, or press OK to expand minimized controls.
- Update Hotstar/JioHotstar through the device’s official app store.
- Exit the title, reopen it, and try again.
- Sign out and sign back in.
- Restart the phone, TV, streaming stick, or set-top box.
- Reinstall the app if the control is absent for multiple titles.
- Try another supported device or a desktop browser to isolate the fault.
Do not expect a network change to create a missing subtitle track. Change networks only when the video itself is buffering or failing.

When subtitles are selected but invisible
- Reopen the menu and confirm the selection is a language, not Off or None.
- Pause, resume, or skip back a few seconds.
- Try another listed language, episode, or title.
- Close picture-in-picture, casting overlays, or other on-screen panels.
- Check device accessibility settings for caption conflicts or hidden text.
- Update the app and operating system, then restart the device.
If subtitles work on another title, the original track may be defective or absent. If they fail everywhere, report the device model, operating-system version, app version, title, and approximate playback time to support.
When subtitles are out of sync
- Pause and resume playback.
- Skip back or forward a few seconds.
- Restart the episode.
- Try the same title on another supported device or playback method.
- Report the title, season and episode, device, app version, and approximate timestamp.
Do not assume Hotstar/JioHotstar provides a manual subtitle-delay control; use one only if it is visibly offered on your platform.
Subtitle size, color, and appearance
Look first in the in-player subtitle menu for a Style or Appearance option. If none is present, check the phone, TV, operating-system, or streaming-device caption settings. Those settings may affect other apps but may not override captions rendered directly by Hotstar/JioHotstar. User reports describe styling and device behavior that differ between JioHotstar platforms (reported example 1; reported example 2); these are anecdotal, not product documentation.
Why your screen may not match an online guide
Branding, catalogs, subtitle tracks, and controls vary by country. In India, look for JioHotstar; elsewhere, the service may still be called Hotstar or Disney+ Hotstar. Older instructions often say “comments icon,” while newer builds may show a speech bubble, CC, or Subtitles & Audio. The reliable rule is to open the playback overlay and look for the subtitle or caption control supplied for that title and device.
