If you want to receive gifts from channels you don’t follow, turn off Twitch’s setting that blocks those gifts. To send one, use the channel’s subscription menu.
What “gifts” means on Twitch
On Twitch, “gifts” usually means gifted subscriptions: a viewer pays for a channel subscription for another viewer or for members of the channel community. They are different from Bits and Cheers, and from tips or donations made through third-party services. A Prime Gaming subscription is also distinct: Twitch’s gifting announcement says it cannot be transferred as a gift.
How to allow gifted subscriptions as a viewer
To be eligible for community gifts from channels you don’t follow, disable the block on receiving those gifts:
- Sign in to Twitch and open your account menu.
- Choose Settings, then open Security and Privacy or the privacy section.
- Find Block Receiving Gifts on Channels You Don’t Follow and turn it off.
- Save the change if Twitch displays a save button.
Twitch can change settings placement and wording across devices, languages, and account rollouts. If you don’t see the control, search Settings for “gifts.” This setting removes a restriction on gifts from channels you don’t follow; it does not guarantee that Twitch will select your account for a community gift. Following or chatting in a channel may make you more visible to its community, but does not guarantee a gift either.

How to gift a subscription to someone
You don’t need to enable a channel setting to buy a gift. On the channel, open Subscribe, choose Gift a Sub, then select a recipient or a community-gifting option if one is offered. Pick the tier and quantity available in the purchase flow, review the order, and complete payment. Twitch’s subscription guide covers the subscription flow; exact controls can vary by device and interface.
You may also be able to select someone’s name in chat, open their user card, and choose Gift a Sub. Twitch documented this route in its subscription-gifting announcement. If the option is missing in the mobile app, try Twitch’s desktop website; mobile and web purchase flows have changed over time, so older platform-specific instructions may no longer apply.

Do streamers need to enable gifts?
Generally, no. Gifted subscriptions are part of Twitch’s built-in channel subscription system, not a separate donation feature the streamer has to switch on. The channel needs subscriptions available. Twitch’s Creator Dashboard and monetization tools can vary with eligibility and account status, so a channel without subscriptions may not show a gifting option.
Twitch’s Monetized Streamer Agreement includes paid and gifted subscriptions in the program, but it does not establish one guaranteed payment per gift. A streamer’s applicable share depends on the agreement and dashboard; access to monetization tools and eligibility for payouts are not the same thing. Twitch’s May 13, 2026 monetization update describes expanded access to some tools for eligible streamers while retaining status requirements for payouts.

Why you can’t see or complete a gift
- The channel may not offer subscriptions. If there is no subscription option, a gift-sub purchase may not be available for that channel.
- The recipient may not be eligible. Twitch’s original gifting rules excluded recipients who were already subscribed or banned in that channel. Those are useful checks, though current eligibility can depend on Twitch’s live rules and account conditions.
- The purchase surface may differ. The button or available options may vary between desktop, mobile web, and apps. Try desktop web if the expected control is missing on mobile; Twitch later announced iOS subscription support, so blanket claims that gifting is never available on mobile are outdated.
- Payment, region, or account restrictions may apply. Check the on-screen purchase message and your payment method; Twitch’s available purchase options can differ by platform and location.
- You may be looking for the wrong feature. A gifted sub is a Twitch channel subscription, not a Bit, tip, donation, or transferred Prime Gaming subscription.
Do gifted subs renew, and can you refuse one?
Don’t assume a gifted sub will renew or be charged to the recipient. Twitch’s gifting announcement described gifts as one-month subscriptions and said recurring gifts were unavailable at launch; because that information is historical, rely on the duration shown in Twitch’s current purchase and subscription screens for the specific gift.
Twitch’s announcement also described gifts as automatically applied and purchases as final and nonrefundable. It said recipients could disable subscription benefits while the streamer still received support. Since those details are from 2017, check your current Subscription Management controls and Twitch’s applicable terms for your account rather than assuming every gift can be rejected or refunded.

Do gifted subscriptions trigger streamer alerts?
Twitch processes a gifted sub through its native subscription system; a custom overlay or alert is optional. Streamers who want custom notifications can use a bot or integration that listens for gift-sub events. Twitch documents these events in its EventSub subscription types.
