You need Spotify Premium to download music for offline listening. In the Spotify app, open an album or playlist, select Download, wait for completion, then test playback with Wi‑Fi and mobile data turned off. To save one song, add it to a playlist first and download that playlist. Spotify Free includes offline podcast downloads, but not offline music downloads.
What you need before downloading
- An active Spotify account with an eligible Premium plan for offline music.
- The Spotify app on a phone, tablet, Windows PC or Mac; the web player is not the supported download method.
- An internet connection for the initial download.
- Enough storage. Spotify recommends keeping at least 1 GB free.
- The current app version and access to the same account you will use offline.
Saving a song to Your Library or Liked Songs is not the same as downloading it. Only content with a completed download status is available without a connection. Spotify’s official offline feature stores app-managed data, not ordinary audio files; Spotify describes iPhone downloads as encrypted. See Spotify’s Premium benefits and storage guidance.
Download music on iPhone or Android
Download an album or playlist
- Connect to Wi‑Fi and open Spotify.
- Find the album or playlist and open it.
- Tap Download.
- Wait until the download indicator shows completion.
- Turn off Wi‑Fi and cellular data, or enable Airplane Mode, and play several tracks to verify them.
Menu names can vary slightly by app version, operating system and region. Spotify’s current mobile path for Offline Mode and storage controls is Profile picture → Settings and privacy → Data-saving and offline.
Download one song
Spotify’s supported workflow does not use a standalone download control for an individual track. Add the song to a new or existing playlist, open that playlist and tap Download. Downloading Liked Songs requires the same explicit playlist download action.

Download music on Windows or Mac
- Install and open the Spotify desktop app.
- Sign in to the Premium account.
- Open the album or playlist you want to keep offline.
- Click Download and wait for the indicator to finish.
- Disconnect from the internet and test playback.
To force Spotify to use only saved material, enable Offline Mode. On Mac, choose Spotify in the Apple menu bar, then Offline Mode. On Windows, open the three-dot menu, choose File, then Offline Mode. Instructions are listed in Spotify’s offline-listening guide.
Podcasts are different on the Free plan
Spotify Free users can download podcasts for offline listening, but music downloads require Premium. Video podcasts can consume considerably more data; where the app offers it, choose an audio-only download when video is unnecessary. Podcast downloads do not grant offline access to Spotify’s music catalog.
Verify downloads before a flight or trip
- Wait for every intended album or playlist to finish.
- Enable Airplane Mode, or disable both Wi‑Fi and cellular data.
- Open the downloaded collection and play tracks from its beginning, middle and end.
- Confirm that you can browse the downloaded material while disconnected.
- If you use Bluetooth, Android Auto or CarPlay, test that setup while offline too.
Do this before leaving coverage. Offline Mode is useful when you want Spotify to avoid attempting to stream anything that was not downloaded.

Prevent mobile-data charges and manage storage
Keep downloads on Wi‑Fi
Spotify uses Wi‑Fi for downloads by default. To permit cellular downloads, go to Profile picture → Settings and privacy → Data-saving and offline → Downloads and streaming, then enable Downloads over cellular. Leave this off unless you deliberately want to spend mobile data.
Choose download quality
Open Spotify’s quality controls and select a setting appropriate for your storage and data allowance. Spotify labels this Audio Quality on iOS and Media Quality on Android. Higher quality uses more space; lossless downloads can use substantially more. Spotify says Premium supports up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz FLAC across much of its catalog, but lossless availability and playback depend on the track, device and output chain.
Free space safely
Use Spotify’s download controls rather than a generic cache cleaner when you need to reclaim space. On mobile, go to Profile picture → Settings and privacy → Data-saving and offline; under Storage, choose Remove all downloads. To remove one collection, open Your Library, filter by Downloaded when available, open the album or playlist, tap the green downloaded-arrow control and choose Remove.

Android users may be able to store downloads on an available, working SD card. On iPhone, downloads remain encrypted app data. A long, high-quality or lossless playlist can require substantial storage, so keep Spotify’s recommended 1 GB of free memory available.
Limits and rules that affect offline listening

These limits and requirements are documented in Spotify’s offline-listening support page. Downloads belong to the Spotify app installation on a device, not to a transferable music folder. A new phone or tablet therefore requires fresh downloads.
If downloads disappear or fail
- Check Premium status. Offline music is a Premium benefit; verify the account and billing status.
- Go online and let Spotify sync. This is essential if 30 days have passed since the last connection.
- Check storage. Free space and Spotify’s 1 GB recommendation matter for large collections.
- Check the five-device limit. Downloads can be removed from the least recently used device after the limit is exceeded.
- Update and restart Spotify. An outdated app can prevent downloads or make them unavailable.
- Check for data-cleaning software. Battery savers and cache cleaners can remove Spotify’s stored data.
- Check an Android SD card. Confirm it is inserted, readable and has free space.
- Review the collection. A track may be unavailable in your region or may have been removed; a changed playlist may need to sync again.
- Re-download after reinstalling. Reinstallation never preserves the previous offline copies.
VPNs, captive portals and unstable connections can also interrupt a download. Reconnect through a reliable network, then start the affected album or playlist again.

Can Spotify downloads become MP3 or FLAC files?
No. Spotify’s Download button creates encrypted, app-managed offline data for playback inside Spotify; it does not export files for a USB drive, another player or unrestricted editing. Do not rely on third-party “Spotify MP3 downloaders,” browser extensions or cracked accounts: they are outside Spotify’s supported workflow and can create account, security or legal risks.
Local Files is separate. It lets Spotify play audio files you already legally store on your own device; it does not convert catalog tracks into local files.
Is Premium worth it for offline music?
If offline access to Spotify’s music catalog is the goal, Premium is necessary. It also provides ad-free music, on-demand playback and downloads on supported apps. Free may be sufficient for online music, offline podcasts or your own Local Files.

Spotify’s US Premium page displayed these monthly prices on August 18, 2026: Individual $12.99, Student $6.99, Duo $18.99 and Family $21.99. Eligibility, taxes, offers and prices vary by market and can change; check the live US Premium page. The Student plan requires verification, Duo is intended for two people meeting Spotify’s same-address requirements, and Family is for a household with separate accounts.
Offline Backup
Some Premium mobile users may see Offline Backup, an automatically generated recent-listens mix. It can help when you forgot to prepare a playlist, including in supported Android Auto and Apple CarPlay situations, but it is not a guaranteed replacement for downloading the specific music you want.
