Spotify does not officially download catalog songs as MP3 files. Premium subscribers can save albums and playlists for offline playback inside the Spotify app, but those downloads are app-managed and cannot be exported to a USB drive or played independently in another music player.
No—Spotify does not officially let you export its catalog tracks as ordinary MP3 files. Spotify Premium can download albums and playlists for offline playback, but those downloads remain app-managed data for playback inside Spotify. They cannot be copied to a USB drive, opened in VLC or another music player, or transferred as independent MP3 files.
If you need a real, portable MP3, obtain it from an artist, label, or music store that expressly sells or supplies downloadable files. If you only need to listen without an internet connection, use Spotify’s supported offline-download feature instead.

- Use Spotify Premium for music downloads. Spotify allows Premium users to download albums and playlists. Podcasts have separate download availability.
- Put an individual song in a playlist. Spotify’s documented workflow is to download a playlist or album rather than export a single catalog track directly. Create a playlist containing the song if necessary.
- Open the playlist or album in the Spotify app. Select the Download control. The exact appearance can vary by device and app version.
- Wait for the download to finish while online. Keep Spotify open until the download indicator shows that the content is available offline.
- Use Offline Mode when appropriate. Offline Mode restricts playback to downloaded content and is useful when you want to avoid using mobile data. The setting’s location and wording can vary between desktop, Android, and iPhone.
Spotify requires the account to connect to the service periodically. According to Spotify’s current help guidance, downloads may be removed or become unavailable if you stay offline for 30 days. Downloads can also disappear after reinstalling the app, and Spotify limits offline downloads to five devices. Reinstalling Spotify means downloading the content again.
Why a Spotify download is not an MP3
An MP3 is a normal audio file that can generally be copied, backed up, moved to compatible devices, and played by many independent music applications. A Spotify offline download works differently: Spotify manages the downloaded data and authorizes playback through its application and account.
Spotify’s storage documentation specifically describes iPhone downloads as encrypted. That is why locating Spotify-related data in device storage does not provide a practical or supported way to obtain playable MP3 files. On Android, Spotify may allow downloads to be stored on an available external SD card, but this changes the location of Spotify-managed data; it does not convert the content into portable MP3 files.
Spotify recommends keeping at least 1 GB of free storage for its app-managed downloads. The actual space required depends on how much content you download and the settings used by the app.

Can you copy Spotify downloads to a USB drive?
No. Spotify’s official offline feature does not provide an export, “save as MP3,” or “copy to USB” function. The downloaded data is intended to work through Spotify on an authorized device, not as a collection of transferable songs.
Copying folders from Spotify’s storage location will not produce a usable music library in another player. It may also interfere with Spotify’s ability to recognize its own downloads.
Why Spotify-to-MP3 converters and rippers are not recommended
Websites and applications marketed as Spotify-to-MP3 converters, stream rippers, recording tools, modified Spotify clients, or DRM-removal utilities are not official Spotify features. This article does not provide instructions for using them.
Spotify’s U.S. User Guidelines prohibit copying, reproducing, redistributing, ripping, recording, transferring, or otherwise using Spotify content in ways not expressly permitted by Spotify’s agreements or applicable law. The guidelines also prohibit circumventing technology used by Spotify or its licensors. Spotify’s Terms of Use describe access to the service and its content as limited, revocable, personal, and non-commercial, and state that the content is licensed rather than sold or transferred to the user.

The legal outcome can depend on your country, the recording, your purpose, and the specific method. It would be too broad to claim that every third-party tool is illegal everywhere. The safer and more accurate conclusion is that these tools are unsupported, may conflict with Spotify’s terms and user rules, may expose you to malware or deceptive downloads, and may raise copyright or anti-circumvention issues.
Use Spotify Local Files for MP3s you already have
Spotify’s Local Files feature is different from downloading music from Spotify’s catalog. It lets Spotify play audio files that are already legally stored on your computer or mobile device.
A legitimate Local Files workflow looks like this:
- Obtain the audio legally—for example, by purchasing a downloadable file from an artist or music store, or by using a file you created yourself.
- Keep the MP3 or other supported audio file on your computer or device.
- In Spotify’s settings, enable the option for Local Files or local audio files. The label and location vary by app version and operating system.
- Allow Spotify to scan the folder containing the file, or add that folder as a source when the app provides the option.
- Open the resulting local-files collection in Spotify and play the existing file.
Local Files does not download, unlock, or convert a Spotify catalog track. It only gives Spotify an interface for playing audio that you already possess and have the legal right to use. It also does not make a file obtained from Spotify’s catalog lawful to copy.

If your goal is a file that you can back up, move between devices, or play in another music application, start with a source that explicitly offers downloadable audio. Check the product page before buying because not every artist or release provides the same formats.

For example, eligible Bandcamp purchases may be available as MP3 V0, MP3 320, FLAC, AAC, Ogg Vorbis, ALAC, WAV, or AIFF. Bandcamp identifies MP3 as the default format for broad compatibility, but availability is controlled by the artist or label and can differ by release. You can downloadable MP3 music from a release page only when that release expressly includes a downloadable MP3 option; this is an alternative purchase source, not a method for converting Spotify tracks.
Other lawful possibilities include an artist’s own store, a label’s download shop, or a digital marketplace that clearly supplies a downloadable file. Confirm the format, permitted uses, and regional availability before purchasing. Buying access to a stream is not the same as buying an MP3 download.

Quick troubleshooting
My playlist will not download
- Check that you are signed in to the Premium account that has download access for music.
- Confirm that the device has an internet connection and enough free storage.
- Make sure Spotify has permission to use storage or mobile data where required.
- Check whether the device is already one of the five devices used for offline downloads.
- Keep the app open while the download completes, then test playback with Offline Mode.
The downloads disappeared
- Connect to Spotify online; downloads can require an online check at least once every 30 days.
- Check whether Spotify was reinstalled. Reinstallation removes app-managed downloads and requires a fresh download.
- Check whether you exceeded the five-device offline limit.
- Do not delete or manually move Spotify’s storage folders.
I have an MP3 but cannot find it in Spotify
- Verify that Local Files or local audio files is enabled in Spotify settings.
- Confirm that Spotify is scanning the folder where the file is stored.
- Check that the file is playable and that the app has permission to access it.
- Remember that Local Files plays your existing file; it does not import Spotify catalog music as a new MP3.
