You can install Spotify’s free Mac app from Spotify’s official download page, open it from Applications, and sign in. Spotify currently lists macOS 12.0 or later as supported; if your Mac can’t run a supported system, try the Spotify Web Player in an up-to-date browser. Note that downloading the app is free, but downloading music for offline listening on desktop requires Premium.

What you need
- A supported Mac: Spotify’s supported-devices page lists OS X 12.0 or later for the Mac app. This is Spotify’s stated minimum, not a guarantee that every Mac able to run that version will support every future app release.
- An internet connection: You need one to download the app, sign in, and stream. Offline listening has separate requirements.
- A Spotify account: You can use a Free account for online listening or Premium for additional features, including offline music downloads.
- Enough free storage: Spotify recommends at least 1 GB of free space for storage management and downloads. Actual use depends on your cache and how much content you save.
If this is a school or work Mac, installation may be restricted by its administrator. The Web Player may be an option, though the network could block Spotify too.

- Check your macOS version: choose Apple menu > About This Mac. If it is below Spotify’s supported minimum, use the Web Player or update macOS if Apple supports an upgrade for your Mac.
- Visit Spotify’s official Mac download page and select the download button. Avoid third-party installer sites.
- Open the downloaded installer from your browser’s download list or the Downloads folder, then follow the on-screen prompts.
- Open Applications > Spotify, or press Command-Space and search for Spotify. If Spotify offers an update, install it before troubleshooting playback.
The desktop Mac app is downloaded directly from Spotify’s website; don’t mistake it for Spotify’s mobile app listing in Apple’s App Store. If macOS asks whether to open an app downloaded from the internet, proceed only if you downloaded it from Spotify’s official site.

Sign in or create an account
Choose the login method associated with your Spotify account—such as email and password, Apple, or Facebook. Using a different sign-in method can make it seem as if your library or subscription is missing, or can lead you to create a second account by mistake. If you need to recover access, use Spotify’s password reset page.
If Spotify is in Offline Mode and you normally sign in with Apple or Facebook, Spotify says you may need to sign in with your email address and password instead. Turn off Offline Mode or connect to the internet if you can.
Find and play music, podcasts, and more
- Choose Search and enter a song, album, artist, playlist, podcast, or—where available—an audiobook.
- Select a result and click Play. Use Home for recommendations and recently played items, and Your Library for saved content and playlists.
- Use the playback bar to pause, skip, seek, adjust volume, open the queue, or choose a playback device. Some controls and content vary by account, plan, region, and app version.
- To make a playlist, choose the playlist-creation option, give it a name, then add tracks. The queue is for upcoming playback; a playlist is a saved collection you can return to.
The device picker can send playback to supported Spotify Connect devices. Depending on the equipment and compatibility, available destinations may include speakers, TVs, or other devices. You can also use the Mac’s audio output settings for connected headphones and speakers. Spotify says an account can play on only one device at a time; installing the app on several devices is a separate matter.

Spotify Free supports online streaming, but ads and playback controls can vary by platform, market, and current policy. Premium includes ad-free music listening and full on-demand playback under Spotify’s current plan terms. See Spotify’s Free and Premium pages for the offers available in your region.
Download music for offline listening
On the Mac desktop app, offline music downloads require Premium. Spotify says Free users can download podcasts, but not music. On desktop, the download action is for playlists rather than individual tracks: to save one song, put it in a playlist and download that playlist.
- Connect to the internet and open the playlist you want to save.
- Select its Download button and wait for the download indicator to show that it is saved.
- When you want to avoid streaming and play only content saved on the Mac, choose Spotify > Offline Mode from the macOS menu bar.
Spotify’s offline-listening rules currently allow up to 10,000 tracks per device on up to five devices. The account must connect to the internet at least once every 30 days to keep downloads active. Spotify may remove downloads from the least recently used device if you exceed the five-device limit.

These are app-managed offline copies, not MP3 files you can export to Finder, copy to a USB drive, or play in another app. Reinstalling Spotify removes saved downloads, so you’ll need to download them again. Keep free space available; storage use varies with audio quality, downloads, and cache.

Use Spotify Offline Mode
In the Mac menu bar at the top of the screen, select Spotify > Offline Mode. When it is on, content that was not downloaded may be unavailable or appear grayed out. Turn Offline Mode off and reconnect to stream or refresh your downloads. Offline Mode is useful when you want to ensure Spotify does not try to stream over a weak connection.
Desktop app or Web Player?

To use the Web Player, open it in a supported browser, sign in, then search and play. Spotify lists Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Opera, and Safari among supported desktop browsers; keep yours current. If the player fails, Spotify recommends trying a private or incognito window. Some browsers may also require protected-content or DRM playback to be enabled; see Spotify’s Web Player help for browser-specific steps.

Spotify Free and Premium: what matters on Mac
You do not need Premium to install the app or stream online with a Free account. Premium is relevant if you want offline music, ad-free music listening, and full on-demand playback. If you mainly listen online or use Spotify for podcasts, Free may be sufficient; if you need music for travel or unreliable internet, offline downloads are a Premium feature. Features and offers can vary by region and account eligibility. Check Spotify’s current offline-download feature page rather than relying on a price or promotion quoted elsewhere.

The installer will not open
Make sure the download finished, then download it again from Spotify’s official page. Confirm that your macOS meets Spotify’s current requirement. If this is a managed Mac, ask its administrator about app-install restrictions. Delete installers from unofficial sources rather than trying to bypass macOS security.
The app installs but will not launch or play
Quit and reopen Spotify, restart the Mac, and check for app and macOS updates. If the problem continues, reinstalling may help; be aware that Spotify downloads are removed and must be saved again after reinstalling. Try the Web Player to see whether the issue is limited to the desktop app. Spotify’s playback troubleshooting guide has further steps.

Spotify says it is offline
- In the menu bar, select Spotify and make sure Offline Mode is off.
- Check that another website or app can use the internet, then try another Wi-Fi network if possible.
- Check firewall or network restrictions. School, office, hotel, and public networks may block Spotify even when other sites work.

Songs are grayed out
Check whether Offline Mode is on and whether those tracks were downloaded. If you are online, confirm the connection and remember that content availability can differ by market. Spotify lists Offline Mode, network problems, and market availability among possible causes; see its playback help.
The Web Player has no audio or will not play
Update the browser, try a private window, and check whether the network blocks Spotify. If the browser reports that protected content is disabled, follow Spotify’s browser-specific protected-content instructions. If available, compare with the desktop app.

Downloads can be removed if the account has not connected to the internet for 30 days, Spotify was reinstalled, or the five-device limit was exceeded. An outdated app, low storage, or tools that clear app data can also interfere. Reconnect, update Spotify, check storage, and download the playlists again if needed. Spotify’s offline-listening page explains the current limits.
There is no sound
Check Spotify’s volume and the Mac’s system volume, confirm the selected output device, and reconnect Bluetooth headphones if needed. Make sure playback has not been sent to another Spotify Connect device. Test another app, then restart Spotify or the Mac.
