You can stream a playlist from a VPS to YouTube by preparing media the server is authorized to use, choosing an FFmpeg input that matches the playlist format, pacing prerecorded files in real time, and sending the output to the current RTMPS ingest URL from YouTube Live Control Room. The key first step is identifying what “playlist” means: a text list of local video files, an HLS manifest, or another format. FFmpeg’s concat demuxer handles compatible local files in sequence; it is not a universal playlist reader.
1. Check YouTube access and create the live stream
Live streaming requires a verified YouTube channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days, according to YouTube’s eligibility guidance. Check that your channel meets the current requirements before spending time configuring a VPS.
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Create > Go live to open Live Control Room.
- Create or schedule a stream. Copy the ingest URL and stream key shown for that stream; do not reuse an old URL from a tutorial.
- Keep the stream key private. Anyone with it may be able to send a feed to your broadcast.
YouTube currently lists limits of 10 active streams per channel and 3 active streams per stream key. Check Live Control Room for current limits before planning multiple simultaneous broadcasts.
2. Identify the playlist format before downloading
Local files in a text list
If you want to play a sequence of downloaded video files, FFmpeg’s concat demuxer can read a text file listing those local files and present them as one sequential input. This is the appropriate case for the concat demuxer.

For example, create a trusted text file named playlist.txt in the same directory as the media:

file 'part-03.mp4'Then use -f concat -i playlist.txt as the input in the command below. The files should have matching streams, codecs, and time bases. If they differ, a seamless concat may fail or produce playback and timestamp problems; normalize them into compatible files first, or use a different workflow that explicitly handles the differences.
HLS manifest or other remote playlist
An HLS .m3u8 manifest describes media segments; it is not the same as a concat-demuxer text file. FFmpeg has a separate HLS demuxer, but the right invocation depends on the manifest, segment URLs, access controls, and any required authentication. Do not pass a remote playlist to the concat demuxer just because both are called playlists. Verify the input method for the format and access arrangement you actually have.

Only download or rebroadcast media you have permission to use. A technically successful stream does not grant rights to copyrighted films, music, or other content.
3. Prepare the VPS and check the workload
Choose a VPS with enough disk space for the media and sustained outbound bandwidth for the stream. There is no universal CPU or RAM recommendation: requirements depend on the source resolution and frame rate, target bitrate, and whether FFmpeg can copy the existing streams or must transcode them. Check the provider’s sustained egress and compute limits, then benchmark the actual workload rather than relying only on advertised peak resources.
- Confirm the playlist and every referenced file are present on the server and readable by the account running FFmpeg.
- Check free disk space for downloads, temporary files, and any converted copies you need.
- Confirm that the VPS network can sustain the outgoing stream bitrate with headroom.
- Keep the stream key out of public scripts, logs, repositories, and support tickets.
4. Choose encoding settings that fit the source
YouTube’s general encoder guidance recommends H.264 video, constant bitrate (CBR), and a 2-second keyframe interval; the interval should not exceed 4 seconds. Choose resolution, frame rate, and bitrate to match the source and YouTube’s current encoder settings. Avoid upscaling a low-resolution source simply to select a higher output resolution.

For a prerecorded playlist encoded as it streams, a basic H.264/AAC example is:

-f flv "rtmps://CURRENT-INGEST-URL/STREAM-KEY"This is an example, not a universal bitrate prescription: it assumes 30 fps for the 60-frame GOP values, and the video bitrate must be adjusted to the chosen resolution, frame rate, source quality, and current YouTube guidance. Replace the quoted destination with the exact RTMPS server URL and stream key from Live Control Room. Some YouTube ingest URLs provide a server path and key as separate values; assemble them exactly as the interface specifies.

-re reads a file at its native rate so prerecorded media is emitted in real time rather than as fast as the VPS can process it. FFmpeg cautions against using this option for actual live capture devices or live streams. If the existing files already have compatible codecs and stream layouts, you may be able to stream-copy instead of transcoding; doing so avoids encoding load but does not let you change their codec, resolution, or bitrate.

YouTube recommends keeping total stream bitrate within available upload bandwidth and leaving 20% headroom. Apply that margin to the VPS’s sustained outbound capacity, not just a short speed-test peak.
5. Send the feed over RTMPS, then check the preview
Use the RTMPS URL supplied by Live Control Room. RTMPS is RTMP over TLS/SSL and encrypts the connection. YouTube explains its ingest options in its encoder guidance and RTMPS instructions. Do not substitute a remembered ingest address for the current one.
- Start FFmpeg in a persistent VPS session or under a process manager so disconnecting your SSH session does not stop the command.
- In Live Control Room, wait for the incoming preview and inspect audio and video before making the broadcast public.
- If the stream is scheduled for manual start, select Go live in Live Control Room when you are ready.
- Monitor FFmpeg output and the VPS network while the broadcast runs. YouTube recommends testing the encoder and monitoring stream quality.
YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume a longer continuous broadcast will be archived in full.

6. When HLS may be the better ingest option
RTMPS is the straightforward choice for a continuous feed when your encoder and video format are supported. YouTube’s HLS ingest can be relevant when HDR or a codec unsupported by RTMP is required, but it has higher latency and more specific delivery requirements. YouTube specifies HTTPS POST/PUT, TS segments of 1–4 seconds, no byte ranges, and a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments. See its HLS ingest guidance before implementing that path.
7. Account for timestamp and reconnection failures
Concat duration and timestamps
The concat demuxer relies on file durations. Inaccurate or unavailable duration metadata can cause timestamp artifacts, especially around file transitions. Its documentation supports a duration directive to override a file’s duration in the concat list. The -safe option defaults to enabled; disabling it permits a broader set of paths, so do so only when you trust the playlist file and every path it references.
Recovery after a disconnect
FFmpeg has protocol-specific reconnect options and an optional FIFO muxer recovery mechanism, but their behavior depends on the input protocol and failure type. They do not guarantee gap-free playback. See the documentation for protocol reconnect options and the FIFO muxer. Test recovery with your actual input and YouTube connection before relying on it for a long-running stream.
8. Troubleshoot common problems
