There is no single national address for Ukrainian book donations. The reliable approach is to choose a specific library or cultural organization, describe the books you have, and obtain current acceptance and delivery instructions before sending anything.
For a concrete route, the Educational Initiatives Foundation’s Dobranich project seeks Ukrainian-language books for families displaced within Ukraine. The Scientific and Technical Library of Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute accepts gifts for its academic collection, while Free Ukraine Library provides a diaspora option. Local government campaigns can also open short-term intake periods, but their dates and rules must be checked each time.
Start with the recipient, not the boxes
Libraries do not operate a universal donation service. Under Ukraine’s library framework, gifts are one way collections may be built, but each library has authority to determine which sources and materials it accepts. That means a book that is useful to one institution may be unsuitable for another.
Before sorting a large collection, decide who should use it:

Once you have a likely recipient, send a short list of titles, photographs of representative shelves, or both. Ask about language, subject, publication date, condition, quantity, and delivery method. Do not ship first and ask later: addresses, opening hours, named contacts, and postal arrangements can change.

Dobranich: a route for Ukrainian-language books for displaced families
The Educational Initiatives Foundation’s Dobranich initiative is the most specific match when your goal is to put Ukrainian-language books directly in the hands of families displaced within Ukraine. Its project guidance requests books that are in good condition or newly purchased.
Subjects and formats Dobranich names
- Children’s books in Ukrainian.
- Educational and developmental books.
- Coloring books.
- History guides.
- Fiction.
- Popular nonfiction about Ukraine’s history, culture and armed forces.
These categories describe the project’s stated interests; they are not a guarantee that every title is needed at the moment you contact the foundation. A concise inventory helps the team avoid receiving duplicates or material outside its current distribution plan.
Drop-off and domestic shipping
The project page describes weekday drop-off in Kyiv and Lviv and shipment through Nova Poshta to a Kyiv branch. Because the operational details are liable to change, request the current address, receiving hours, contact name and branch or shipment instructions directly from the foundation. Do not rely on an old screenshot, forwarded message or address copied from an earlier appeal.
Kyiv Polytechnic’s university-library route
The Scientific and Technical Library of Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute invites book gifts to develop a collection it describes as current, varied, interesting and useful. Its English support page gives examples rather than a blanket acceptance rule:
- Textbooks published within the last three years.
- Reference books.
- Fiction.
- Books in foreign languages.
- Albums.
The three-year textbook example matters if you are clearing older course books: ask before assuming they belong in an academic collection. The library provides a book-donation contact. Send your inventory first, then arrange a handover or shipment that the library has agreed to receive. For a large collection, confirm whether the institution has staff capacity and storage space before arranging transport.

Free Ukraine Library and other diaspora options
Free Ukraine Library’s donation page accepts in-kind donations of Ukrainian books at its locations and links to a locations list. This can be practical when you are near one of those sites or when a diaspora organization is a better fit for the language and community you want to serve.
Location-based acceptance is not the same as a universal mail-in program. Check the relevant location’s hours, intake policy and preferred contact before you travel. The organization also describes monetary donations that help purchase books and boxes, but that information does not establish a service in which it will collect any parcel you send without prior approval.

Municipal and district authorities sometimes announce focused book drives. A Kyiv Shevchenkivskyi District Administration announcement dated February 6, 2026, invited residents to donate Ukrainian books to district libraries during a campaign running February 6–14, 2026. That intake window is over.
The useful lesson is procedural: search the relevant library or local-government website for a current announcement, and read the dates and participating branches literally. A campaign may specify only certain neighborhoods, days, subjects, languages or drop-off points. If no active notice is posted, contact the library directly rather than assuming the old campaign continues.
A step-by-step donation process
- Define the audience. Write down whether you want the books to reach displaced families, university readers, public-library patrons or a diaspora community. This determines which route to test first.
- Make a simple inventory. Record title, author, language, publication year when known, format and approximate quantity. For a mixed collection, photograph several shelves so the recipient can see the condition and subject balance.
- Shortlist one or two recipients. Match the audience and geography to the routes above. Avoid sending the same unapproved parcel to several organizations.
- Contact the recipient before packing for shipment. Ask whether it currently wants the titles, languages, subjects and editions you have. Include the total number of boxes or approximate volume if you know it.
- Confirm acceptance conditions. Get a clear answer about condition, quantity, publication date, duplicates, damaged books, delivery method and timing. If the response is conditional, follow the conditions rather than treating the initial invitation as unconditional.
- Obtain current logistics. Request the exact address or branch, receiving hours, contact person, phone or messaging details used for arrival coordination, and any labeling instructions. For a drop-off, ask whether an appointment is needed.
- Sort and prepare only the approved material. Separate children’s, educational, fiction, reference and other categories if the recipient asks for that arrangement. Remove books that are moldy, wet, unsafe or too damaged to use.
- Package to the agreed method. Use sturdy boxes that one person can lift safely, protect books from moisture, and mark the outside with the recipient’s name and your contact details if requested. Keep a copy of the inventory inside or send it electronically.
- Send or deliver during the confirmed window. For Dobranich, use the current Kyiv, Lviv or Nova Poshta instructions supplied by the foundation. For another institution, use only the method it has approved.
- Keep the handover record. Retain the shipment receipt or delivery confirmation and the final inventory. If the organization reports that some books cannot be used, ask whether it wants them redirected or discarded rather than forwarding them elsewhere without permission.
What to offer, and what to withhold until approved
Good candidates for a displaced-family program
Books in Ukrainian that are clean, complete and usable are the strongest starting point for Dobranich. The project specifically mentions children’s reading, educational and developmental titles, coloring books, history guides, fiction and popular nonfiction about Ukraine’s history, culture and armed forces. A newly purchased book is acceptable according to the project guidance, but buying should follow confirmation of need.
Good candidates for an academic library
For Kyiv Polytechnic’s library, begin with textbooks from the last three years, reference books, fiction, foreign-language books and albums—the examples listed by the library. Provide publication years where possible. A recent textbook may be more relevant than a large quantity of obsolete course material, while a well-preserved foreign-language book may fit a collection even when it is not in Ukrainian.

Books that need a direct decision
Do not assume that every old textbook, duplicate novel, encyclopedia set, damaged paperback, children’s workbook with completed exercises, or book in an unfamiliar language will be accepted. The available guidance does not establish a universal rule for these categories. Put them on the inventory and let the intended recipient decide.
Condition, quantity and sorting checklist
- Pages and covers are intact, dry and free of mold or strong odors.
- The book can be safely handled by a child, family or library worker.
- Publication year and edition are recorded when they may affect usefulness.
- Languages and broad subjects are identified.
- Duplicates are counted rather than described vaguely as “many.”
- Books with missing pages, severe water damage or unsafe binding are excluded unless the recipient specifically requests them for another purpose.
- Boxes are closed securely but remain light enough for the receiving team to move.
These are preparation practices, not a substitute for the recipient’s own rules. If an organization asks for a different condition standard or packing method, its instruction controls.
Buying books specifically to donate
Buying new books can make sense when the recipient has identified a gap. Dobranich explicitly allows newly purchased books, and the Kyiv Polytechnic library invites gifts while naming categories it finds useful. In either case, ask for a current wish list or approval before spending money. “Ukrainian books” is too broad to determine whether a title, age level, edition or subject is wanted.
If no recipient has confirmed a need, hold the purchase. A well-intentioned title can still create sorting, storage and forwarding work if it does not match the collection. The goal is a usable donation, not simply a parcel that leaves your home.
Domestic, international and in-person delivery questions
When you are in Ukraine
Use the route’s stated local options. Dobranich describes weekday drop-off in Kyiv and Lviv and a Nova Poshta shipment to a Kyiv branch. Verify the current branch and recipient details before paying for postage. The Kyiv Polytechnic page provides a donation contact but does not establish a standard public drop-off or postal procedure in the information summarized here, so ask the library to specify one.
When you are outside Ukraine
Start with a diaspora location such as a participating Free Ukraine Library site if that is geographically practical, or ask a Ukrainian institution whether it is prepared to receive an international parcel. Do not infer that a domestic address or a Nova Poshta instruction automatically supports international shipping. Confirm who is responsible for receiving the parcel, what address format to use, and whether the organization wants international shipments at all.

International postage, customs paperwork and carrier restrictions depend on the countries and service selected. The recipient should tell you what documentation and delivery arrangement it can handle; do not invent a shipping method on its behalf.

- Language and subject match: Are your books within the categories the organization names?
- Condition and date: Does the recipient specify good condition, new purchases or recent editions?
- Geography: Can you reach the stated location or approved shipping channel?
- Timing: Is the invitation ongoing, or did it apply only to a dated campaign?
- Capacity: Has someone confirmed that the organization can receive your quantity now?
If a route fails any of these checks, pause and contact another recipient instead of sending an unsolicited box.
Common failure points and fixes
The campaign page is old
Symptom: The announcement has a closing date, or the named contact no longer responds. Fix: Treat the dates as binding, search for a newer notice from the same library or authority, and request a current intake decision.
You have a large unsorted collection
Symptom: You cannot tell the recipient how many books, which languages or which subjects are included. Fix: Count boxes, photograph representative shelves and create a title list before asking for acceptance.
The books fit the language but not the audience
Symptom: You have Ukrainian children’s books but are contacting an academic library, or recent technical textbooks but are seeking a family-focused program. Fix: Reassign the collection by audience and send each recipient only the relevant inventory.

You found an address but no confirmation
Symptom: A web page lists a location, but there is no assurance that staff are accepting parcels today. Fix: Contact the organization and obtain current hours, recipient details and delivery approval before dispatch.
The recipient cannot use part of the donation
Symptom: Some duplicates, outdated editions or damaged books are declined. Fix: Ask whether the organization wants you to redirect, recycle or otherwise dispose of them. Do not add unapproved material to a later shipment.
What the legal framework means for donors
Ukraine’s law on libraries and library affairs sets the legal and organizational basis for library activity, recognizes gifts among the ways collections may be completed, and gives libraries authority over collection sources. The practical consequence is straightforward: a library may accept donations, but it is not required to take every book offered. The Ministry of Culture’s library-resources page points to the relevant laws and regulations.
For donors, that framework supports a consent-based process. Treat the institution’s collection policy and current instructions as decisive, especially when the books are old, numerous, specialized or expensive to transport.

A compact message you can send
Use a short, specific inquiry rather than a general offer:
Hello. I would like to donate approximately [quantity] Ukrainian-language books. The collection includes [subjects or age groups], published mainly in [years], and is in [condition]. I am located in [city/country]. Do you currently accept these titles? If so, please confirm the preferred delivery method, current address or branch, receiving hours, contact person and any packing or labeling requirements. I can send a title list and photographs.
Replace each fill-in with real information before sending. A recipient can answer this message quickly because it states the audience, contents, condition, quantity and location.
