How to Donate or Volunteer With Homelessness Services in Northumberland County

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The most direct ways to help are to donate through Transition House Coalition of Northumberland, confirm its current in-kind needs before delivering goods, or apply for a host or driver role with Rebound Child & Youth Services Northumberland’s Nightstop program. Transition House is Northumberland County’s adult emergency shelter. The County coordinates adult shelter access through Transition House at 310 Division Street in Cobourg, while Nightstop supports eligible young people aged 16–24 through screened volunteer hosts and drivers.

Choose the route that fits what you can offer

Homelessness services in Northumberland County need different kinds of support. A financial gift can be made quickly and used where the shelter has the greatest need. Requested goods can help residents directly, but only when the shelter confirms that the items and quantities are useful. Volunteering may mean a defined, screened commitment rather than an occasional drop-in shift. The table below separates the available routes by contribution, beneficiaries and preparation.

Route What you contribute Who it supports Commitment or screening What to confirm first
Transition House financial donation One-time or recurring money Adults using the emergency shelter Donation transaction; no volunteer screening Use the shelter’s current CanadaHelps donation page and select the gift frequency you want
Transition House in-kind donation Requested clothing, linens, toiletries or gift cards Adult shelter residents Purchase and delivery; needs change Ask what is currently needed, acceptable condition, quantities and delivery arrangements
Nightstop host A private room, meals and household support Eligible youth aged 16–24 References, criminal-record checks, training, home visit and staff support Eligibility, household requirements, schedule and current intake
Nightstop driver Transportation for the program Youth using Nightstop Volunteer application and program screening; ask about driving requirements Current routes, times, insurance and vehicle expectations
Transition House board or event support Governance experience or event sponsorship The shelter and its wider operation Role-specific conversation with the shelter Whether a board seat, committee role or sponsorship opportunity is open
County Food 4 All volunteering Sorting, packing, distribution or inventory time People reached through food-security services Role-specific volunteer process Do not assume the placement is inside the emergency shelter

Donate money to the adult emergency shelter

Where the donation goes

Transition House Coalition of Northumberland describes itself as Northumberland County’s emergency shelter for adults over 18 and serves communities throughout the County. Its website directs donors to a CanadaHelps page, where the shelter says both single and recurring donations are available. A financial gift is usually the simplest option when you are unsure which supplies are currently needed because the organization can apply funds to operational priorities.

How to make a gift

  1. Open the donation page from the current Transition House website rather than relying on an old bookmark or an unsolicited payment link.
  2. Choose a one-time or recurring contribution on the CanadaHelps form.
  3. Enter the amount and donor information requested by the payment service.
  4. Keep the confirmation for your records. If you need a tax receipt or have a question about how a gift is designated, contact Transition House directly.

If you are deciding between cash and goods, ask the shelter first. A monetary donation can be used without the storage, sorting and disposal issues that arise when unsolicited items arrive.

Tens Towels 4 Piece Extra Large Bath Towels 30 x 60 Inches, Dark Grey
  • Light Weight and not too thick: The reduced thickness makes it more convenient to carry, allows for quick drying & is energy efficient
  • Larger: This package contains four generously sized bath towels, each measuring 30 x 60 inches, perfect to wrap yourself in
  • Designed in Super Fine Cotton to provide a softer texture and feel
  • Wash before first use. Wash them on their own, use mild detergent and avoid bleach & fabric softeners. Refrain from ironing
  • Use tumble dry on low heat. Over-drying towels can increase linting and reduce lifespan of towels. Shedding is natural on initial wash/dry cycles

Donate clothes, towels or supplies without creating a burden

Items Transition House has identified

Transition House’s help information lists the following categories among its needs:

  • Towels and blankets
  • Socks
  • Men’s and women’s running shoes
  • Sweatpants and pajama pants
  • Sweatshirts or hoodies
  • Toiletries
  • Gift cards

The list is not a permanent shopping list. The County’s February 2025 notice emphasized that shelter needs change and asked prospective in-kind donors to contact the shelter about current requirements. Before buying anything, email [email protected] or use another contact method confirmed by the shelter to ask whether the item is wanted, what sizes or specifications are useful, how many are needed, and when and where deliveries are accepted.

What to ask before dropping items off

  1. “Is this item needed now?” Needs may have been met since the public list was posted.
  2. “Are new items required?” Ask about condition, packaging, hygiene and wear.
  3. “Which sizes or types are most useful?” Clothing and shoes can be difficult to distribute if the size mix is wrong.
  4. “What quantity can you accept?” A large collection may require storage space the shelter does not have.
  5. “Where and when should I deliver it?” Do not leave goods at an entrance without a confirmed handoff.

About buying a towel online

A bath towel is a concrete, marketplace-searchable example because towels appear on Transition House’s needs list. Buying one online is not itself a donation to the shelter, and an online retailer does not substitute for the shelter’s approval. Confirm the current need and delivery instructions first; then purchase only the type and quantity Transition House requests. If the shelter does not need towels at that time, redirect the money to its financial donation page or ask for another priority.

Volunteer with homeless youth through Nightstop

What Nightstop does

Rebound Child & Youth Services Northumberland operates Nightstop, a short-term host-home program for local youth aged 16–24 who meet the program’s eligibility and risk criteria. Instead of relying only on emergency accommodation, Nightstop arranges a safe temporary stay with a trained volunteer household or coordinates transport through volunteer drivers.

Become a host

A Nightstop host provides a private bedroom, bathroom and laundry access, plus meals for the young person during the stay. Hosting is a substantial household commitment, not an informal invitation to someone you have met. Rebound describes a process that includes reference checks, criminal-record checks, training and a home visit. Staff support volunteers during participation.

  1. Call 905-207-3657 to ask about Nightstop volunteering, or call Rebound at 905-372-0007 ext. 229.
  2. Explain whether you are interested in hosting, driving or both, and ask whether applications are currently being accepted.
  3. Review the eligibility, safeguarding, household and scheduling requirements before applying.
  4. Complete the required references and criminal-record checks.
  5. Take the program’s training and complete the home visit.
  6. Wait for staff confirmation before accepting a placement. Follow the boundaries, communication and safety procedures provided by Rebound.

Become a driver

Nightstop also recruits volunteer drivers. A driver role can suit someone who cannot host overnight but can provide reliable transportation. Ask Rebound about the current driving schedule, routes, licensing or insurance requirements, vehicle standards and whether drivers need the same checks and training as hosts. Those details are not specified in the available public information, so obtain them directly rather than assuming your personal vehicle or availability is sufficient.

Questions to settle before you apply

  • Which young people are eligible, and how are placements matched?
  • How much notice do hosts and drivers receive?
  • What happens if a host household has an emergency or cannot continue?
  • What support is available during a stay or a transport assignment?
  • What information must remain confidential?

Ask about Transition House volunteer, board and event roles

General shelter volunteering

Northumberland County’s February 2025 notice said Transition House planned to engage volunteers in different aspects of shelter service and invited interested people to email [email protected]. However, the shelter’s current help information identifies board service and special-event sponsorship without describing a general shelter volunteer application. That means availability, screening, duties and timing should be treated as unconfirmed until Transition House responds.

Email the shelter with a clear subject such as “Volunteer inquiry” and include your availability, relevant skills, preferred type of work and whether you are seeking a regular or one-time role. Ask whether an opening exists now, what screening is required, and whether volunteers interact directly with residents. Do not arrive expecting an unscheduled shift.

Board service and event sponsorship

Transition House identifies board service and special-event sponsorship as additional ways to get involved. Board work generally involves governance, oversight and preparation rather than front-line shelter shifts; event sponsorship supports a particular fundraising activity. Ask the shelter what role or event is currently open, the expected time commitment and whether there is an application or orientation.

Volunteer through the County’s food-security programs

Northumberland County’s volunteer listings include Food 4 All roles such as sorting and packing food, distribution and inventory work. These positions can help people facing food insecurity and may complement homelessness prevention and support, but the County page does not identify them as placements inside Transition House. If your goal is specifically to work at the emergency shelter, ask the County and Transition House separately so you do not apply for the wrong program.

When contacting the County, describe the type of contribution you can make and whether you need a role accessible by public transit, suitable for a particular schedule, or limited to occasional shifts. The listing and the shelter are separate routes, with different supervisors and duties.

Seasonal Winter Warming Room

The County’s latest surfaced seasonal notice says a Winter Warming Room will operate at 600 William Street during the 2026/27 winter season, adding overnight capacity when the shelter at 310 Division Street is full. The notice establishes the location and seasonal purpose but does not establish the exact opening date, daily hours or entry arrangements. Verify those details with Northumberland County before directing someone there or planning a donation.

For broader housing, outreach and community-support questions, contact Northumberland County Community and Social Services at 905-372-6846 or 1-800-354-7051 ext. 2001. If a person is in immediate danger or needs emergency medical help, use emergency services rather than waiting for a shelter callback.

Understand the local service picture without overstating the numbers

Northumberland County’s February 2025 report provides an early snapshot of use after a new warming-room and shelter facility opened. It said over 160 unique clients had accessed warming-room and shelter services, approximately 25% indicated they had been living rough before accessing services, and over 456 meals had been served during that early operating period. These are historical early-operation figures from the County’s 2025 report, not current annual totals or a present-day count of everyone experiencing homelessness in Northumberland County.

The sources available for this topic do not establish a newer named local statistic that should be presented as a current homelessness measure. That limitation matters when deciding how to help: service demand can change seasonally, and a public list or early report cannot tell you how many towels, beds or volunteer hours are needed today. Direct confirmation from the organization remains the reliable way to match your contribution to current demand.

A practical decision guide

If you can give money today

Use Transition House’s current CanadaHelps page for a one-time or recurring donation. This is the lowest-coordination route and does not require you to choose an item or arrange a delivery.

If you already have clothes or household goods

Do not leave an unrequested bag at the shelter. Email [email protected], describe the item and quantity, and wait for instructions about current need, condition and delivery.

If you can provide a room or regular practical help

Contact Nightstop at 905-207-3657 or Rebound at 905-372-0007 ext. 229. Expect an application, references, a criminal-record check, training and a home visit for hosting. Ask about the separate requirements for driving.

If you want a one-time or behind-the-scenes role

Ask Transition House about event sponsorship, board service or any currently open volunteer assignment. If those roles are full, review the County’s Food 4 All listings for food sorting, packing, distribution or inventory work, while recognizing that these are not identified as shelter placements.

If you are helping someone seek shelter

For adult emergency shelter access, call Transition House at 905-376-9562. For the seasonal warming room, confirm the 2026/27 hours and entry process with the County before travelling to 600 William Street.

Contact checklist before you act

  • Transition House donations and volunteer questions: [email protected]
  • Adult shelter access and questions: 905-376-9562
  • Transition House location: 310 Division Street, Cobourg
  • Nightstop volunteer inquiries: 905-207-3657
  • Rebound Child & Youth Services Northumberland: 905-372-0007 ext. 229
  • Northumberland County Community and Social Services: 905-372-6846 or 1-800-354-7051 ext. 2001
  • Seasonal warming room: 600 William Street; verify opening date, hours and entry arrangements for the 2026/27 season

How to make help useful and respectful

  • Ask before delivering physical goods so staff do not have to sort unusable or surplus donations.
  • Follow the shelter’s instructions about privacy, photography, resident contact and drop-off procedures.
  • For volunteer roles, complete every screening and training step and keep boundaries set by staff.
  • Do not describe early 2025 service figures as a current count or annual total.
  • Match the route to the beneficiary: Transition House serves adults, Nightstop serves eligible youth aged 16–24, and Food 4 All is a broader food-security program.
