To bold or cross out text on Tumblr, type and select the words, then choose Bold (B) or Strikethrough (S) in the formatting controls. On the web, you can also use Tumblr’s documented keyboard shortcuts. Tumblr calls a cross-out a strikethrough.
How to bold text on Tumblr
On the web
- Start a post, or open a caption or text field that supports formatting.
- Type the words you want to format and select them with your mouse.
- Choose Bold or the B button in the formatting toolbar.
- Click elsewhere in the editor to check the result before publishing.
For example, selecting “This is important” and applying Bold makes it appear as This is important. Tumblr’s formatting guide explains the web editor’s text controls. The toolbar’s position and order can vary.
In the Tumblr app
- Create or edit a post and tap its text area.
- Type your text, then press and hold a word to select it. Adjust the selection handles to cover the full phrase.
- If the formatting controls are not visible, tap Aa.
- Tap B or Bold, then tap outside the selection to check the result.
Tumblr documents Bold among the app’s formatting options, but the precise layout can vary by app version and post type.

The formatting name to look for is Strikethrough, sometimes shown as an S with a line through it. It draws a horizontal line across the selected words; it does not delete them.

On the web
- Type the full phrase in a post or supported text field.
- Select the words you want crossed out.
- Choose Strikethrough or the S control in the toolbar.
- Click elsewhere in the editor and check the preview.
For example, “This is no longer accurate” becomes This is no longer accurate. To remove the effect, select the formatted words and use the strikethrough control again if it toggles in that editor.
In the Tumblr app
- Type the phrase and press and hold to select it.
- Adjust the selection handles, then open the Aa formatting controls if needed.
- Tap S or Strikethrough and check how the text looks.
On a small screen, it may be easier to select a slightly larger range first and then adjust the handles than to try to tap precisely.

Tumblr keyboard shortcuts for bold and strikethrough
Tumblr lists these as composing shortcuts for the web editor in its accessibility documentation. Put the cursor in the composer or select the text first.

If a shortcut does nothing, use the visible toolbar instead. A browser extension, operating-system command, keyboard layout, or editor mode may affect whether a shortcut works. These are web composing shortcuts, not mobile-app commands.

Can you combine bold and strikethrough?
Yes. Tumblr’s NPF format recognizes bold and strikethrough as inline formatting types, and its NPF specification allows different formatting ranges to overlap. Select the same words, apply Bold, then apply Strikethrough while the selection remains active if possible. Check the preview: the words may appear bold with a line through them, though rendering can differ across the editor, dashboard, app, and blog theme.
Where can you use these controls?
Tumblr’s formatting controls can appear in text posts and in some captions or other text areas, including reblog commentary, depending on the post type and editor. Tumblr’s writing-post guide describes its composer options. Do not assume every field offers the same tools: select text and check whether the formatting toolbar appears.

What to do if the formatting buttons are missing
- Enter text and select it; placing the cursor beside text may not reveal the selection controls.
- Look for Aa or a collapsed formatting toolbar.
- Check whether the composer is in HTML or Markdown mode rather than rich text.
- Try a standard text post to see whether the issue is limited to a particular post type or field.
- If the app does not show the controls, try the web editor, or try the app if the web editor is the one having trouble.
- If the interface appears broken, restart or update the app. If it persists, contact Tumblr Support.
The available controls can differ depending on whether text is selected or the cursor is on a blank line, as Tumblr’s composer guide describes.

What to do if a shortcut does nothing
- Confirm the cursor is inside the composer, or select the text you want to format.
- Check that you are using the web editor; these composing shortcuts do not apply to phone touch controls.
- If you are using Markdown or HTML mode, switch to rich text and try the toolbar.
- Try the toolbar if an extension, operating-system shortcut, or keyboard layout may be intercepting the keystroke.
Rich text, Markdown, and HTML modes
For most users, rich text is the simplest option: select text and use the formatting controls. Tumblr’s web composer also offers HTML and Markdown modes through post-form settings, as described in its writing-post guide.

- Rich text: Use the toolbar or documented web shortcuts.
- Markdown: Choose it if you prefer writing markup, but do not assume markup symbols will be interpreted in every Tumblr composer or posting context. If asterisks or tildes appear literally, that editor did not convert them.
- HTML: Useful when you need direct markup control, but Tumblr warns that advanced custom HTML beyond supported styling may be removed when the post is saved.
Check the published post
Before relying on the formatting, view the published post as well as the editor preview. Tumblr represents bold and strikethrough as structured inline formatting, but their appearance can vary between the dashboard, mobile app, blog theme, and devices. For accessible writing, do not use a strikethrough as the only way to communicate essential information; include a clear text explanation when needed. Tumblr’s accessibility guidance discusses readable text presentation.
