To show the song currently playing, put its title in the video image as an overlay. In OBS, a practical option is a text source that reads a file your music player or automation updates when the track changes. Keep the title in Unicode Tamil, use a Tamil-capable font installed where the overlay is rendered, and preview the result at your stream’s final resolution. YouTube’s broadcast title describes the broadcast; it does not automatically display each changing song title on screen.
How the track title gets onto the stream
Your stream is the audiovisual feed sent to YouTube. The broadcast also has metadata, including a title, but that metadata is not a per-track visual label. The changing song name must be included in the video image before it reaches YouTube. Google’s documentation distinguishes broadcast resources from the live stream carrying the audiovisual feed: YouTube Live Streaming API overview and LiveBroadcasts documentation.
YouTube’s live-chat API concerns chat messages, not the music player’s current-track metadata. Sending a title to chat therefore does not create a now-playing overlay: Google’s live-chat documentation.
Set up a Tamil now-playing overlay in OBS
- Find the track-title source. Check the player or music automation system for its current “now playing” title and whether it can write that value to a text file. The exact integration depends on the software you use; YouTube’s API documentation does not establish a particular player integration.
- Configure the title file. Have the player or a separate automation update a plain text file with the current track name whenever playback changes. Make sure the file contains the title as Unicode text rather than a transliterated substitute. OBS can read text from a file, but the process that updates the file must be configured separately.
- Add a text source in OBS. In the scene used for the stream, add a text source and enable its option to read from a file. Select the title file. OBS describes text sources as a way to add simple text renders to a stream or recording layout; see OBS Project’s Text Sources documentation.
- Choose and check the font. Select a font with Tamil glyph coverage, such as Noto Sans Tamil if it is available in your rendering environment. Install the font on the machine that actually renders the overlay—not merely on a different computer used to edit the setup. Unicode lists Noto among Indic font resources: Noto Fonts: Use Noto and Unicode’s Indic scripts FAQ. The exact font selected can depend on the host’s installed fonts and the text-source implementation.
- Position and size the label. Place the title where it remains readable without covering important video content. Test long names, mixed Tamil and Latin text, punctuation, and the actual background imagery at the stream’s output resolution. Check that the title does not clip at the edges or extend beyond the safe area.
- Test a track change. Preview a change from one title to another and confirm the file updates, OBS refreshes the text, and the previous title disappears. Check again after restarting the player, automation, or stream, since the update behavior depends on how those components are configured.
Make Tamil text render correctly
Keep Tamil text in its proper Unicode sequence and let the font and text renderer handle shaping. Unicode identifies the Tamil block as U+0B80–U+0BFF and the Tamil Supplement as U+11FC0–U+11FFF in Chapter 12 of Unicode 18.0.0. In particular, Tamil vowel signs U+0BC6, U+0BC7, and U+0BC8 can appear visually to the left of the consonant they apply to. That visual placement is a rendering behavior; do not manually rearrange characters to imitate it.

Unicode says Tamil support is implemented in major desktop and mobile operating systems and browsers, but that does not guarantee that your streaming host has a suitable font installed or selected. If characters appear as boxes, missing shapes, or unexpected spacing, first verify the chosen font and where it is installed. Then inspect the exact text and the rendered preview in the environment that will produce the stream. See Unicode’s Tamil language and script FAQ.
Choose an overlay approach
| Approach | Useful when | Check before going live |
|---|---|---|
| OBS text source reading a file | Your player or automation can update a text file, and you want to place and style text in the OBS scene. | Confirm that the file changes on every track transition and that the OBS rendering host has a Tamil-capable font. OBS documents file-based text sources, but does not establish how a particular player writes the file. |
| Browser-based or other third-party overlay | You already have an overlay system that can receive current-track information and render it into the video layout. | Verify the player integration, Tamil shaping and font support in that overlay’s rendering environment, update behavior after a track change or restart, and control over placement. The sources cited here do not verify any particular third-party service. |
Keep the music and the title within YouTube’s rules
Showing a song name does not establish that you have the rights needed to stream the recording. YouTube warns that third-party content identified in a live stream can cause the stream to be replaced with a placeholder image or stopped. Check the rights for the recordings you use and review any notices in YouTube Studio. The platform’s guidance describes how YouTube handles detected material; it does not determine the legal status of a particular recording in every territory. Troubleshoot missing, stale, or malformed titles
- Tamil appears as boxes or blank characters: Check that the selected font includes Tamil glyphs and is installed on the machine rendering the text. Reopen or refresh the overlay after installing a font, then test the rendered preview.
- Vowel signs look misplaced: Preserve the original Unicode sequence instead of rearranging characters. Check the output using a Tamil-capable font and renderer; some vowel signs are displayed to the left of their consonant.
- The previous track name remains: Verify that the player or automation writes the new title to the file and that OBS is reading that same file. Test a track transition while watching the preview.
- The title is cut off or hard to read: Test the longest likely title at the final output resolution. Adjust the source size or placement so the text fits and remains legible over the video.
- The title does not return after a restart: Check that the title file still exists at the configured location, the text source still points to it, and the player or automation resumes updating it. Verify the full restart sequence before relying on it for a continuous broadcast.
Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo keeps a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the uploaded content in the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. StreamNeo does not generate a changing now-playing overlay from a live player; for track names to appear, include them in the uploaded video content or otherwise prepare the visual titles in the files you upload.
