A reconnect message tells you that FFmpeg encountered a transport event; it does not tell you whether the cause was faulty media, an overloaded encoder, the VPS network path, YouTube ingest, or an FFmpeg protocol mismatch. To diagnose a stream dropping from a Kolkata VPS, save timestamped FFmpeg stderr and the matching YouTube Live Control Room health messages, then compare them with encoder output, host load, and measured outbound capacity from that VPS. The city alone cannot identify a route problem.
What to capture when the stream drops
Build an incident record before changing settings. A complete timeline is more useful than a single line containing “reconnect,” because it can show whether FFmpeg exited, retried, resumed output, or remained alive while YouTube reported an unhealthy stream.
- UTC time: Record the time of the drop and any recovery, using the same time basis for FFmpeg and YouTube observations.
- FFmpeg details: Save the full stderr around the event, the complete command line, and the output of
ffmpeg -version, including build/configuration details. Redact the stream key from any command you share. - Process outcome: Note whether FFmpeg exited, continued running, attempted another connection, or resumed sending output. A running process is not proof that YouTube is receiving a healthy stream.
- YouTube evidence: Save the corresponding Live Control Room stream-health status and exact error text. YouTube says the dashboard reports stream health and status messages, and its error guide provides timestamped errors and corrective guidance: See your live stream’s metrics and Live streaming error messages.
- Host conditions: Record CPU load, whether a local archive is available and growing, and any relevant VPS or network-provider events.
Keep the original logs private if they contain credentials or other sensitive data. Never publish a live YouTube stream key.
How to read FFmpeg reconnect logs
Read the log in context, not as a verdict. Separate a connection attempt from a completed connection, continued packet output, and YouTube confirming healthy ingest. Then identify which side of the command the relevant protocol and option apply to: the input may use one protocol while the YouTube output uses another.

Check the protocol before adding reconnect flags
FFmpeg’s documented reconnect, reconnect_at_eof, reconnect_streamed, retry-count, and delay options are listed under its HTTP protocol options. For example, the documentation defines reconnect as: “Reconnect automatically when disconnected before EOF is hit.” These are not general-purpose RTMP publishing switches. An option intended for an HTTP input is not automatically applicable to an RTMP or RTMPS output. Check the actual input and output protocols, the installed build, and the applicable command help before changing flags. See the FFmpeg Protocols Documentation.
Builds can differ because protocol support may be enabled or disabled at configure time. The documentation describes ways to list supported protocols; use the tools and help for the FFmpeg build that is actually running rather than assuming an option exists or behaves the same on another host.
Do not mistake a timeout for recovery
FFmpeg’s generic rw_timeout is measured in microseconds and governs how long network read or write operations wait. It is not a reconnection mechanism, and it cannot create missing upload capacity. Adjusting a wait limit may change when an operation reports a problem, but it does not establish why the connection failed.

Separate media or encoder trouble from a VPS network problem
Before blaming the outbound route, establish whether FFmpeg is producing sound, video, and a local archive correctly. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance recommends inspecting the encoder’s output, encoder errors, CPU load, and local archive; if the stream appears healthy in the encoder, investigate the outbound internet connection. See Troubleshoot your YouTube live stream.
Use what the encoder and archive show
- If the audio or video is already missing, corrupted, or stopping in the encoder or local archive, investigate the source, media timestamps, encoding load, and configuration before treating the event as a network-only failure.
- If the encoder output and archive remain healthy while transmission falters, focus next on output protocol/configuration, outbound connectivity, and YouTube’s ingest messages.
- If CPU load rises or encoder errors line up with the drop, address the host’s encoding/resource issue and repeat the test before drawing conclusions about the route.
These clues can overlap: one fault may expose another. A network interruption can reveal weak retry behavior, and a format problem can coexist with a connectivity issue.
Check VPS upload bandwidth and headroom
Measure usable, sustained outbound capacity from the VPS that sends the stream. A speed test from a laptop or home connection measures a different path and cannot establish the Kolkata VPS’s egress performance. Compare repeated measurements with the stream’s configured video and audio bitrates, host load, and the times of the drops.

YouTube says total streaming bitrate must not exceed available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% headroom. That 20% figure is YouTube Help guidance; the accessed page does not state a publication year. Shared network use can also reduce the capacity available to your stream. See YouTube streaming tips.
| Configured stream | YouTube’s published recommendation | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| H.264, 720p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps recommended | Compare the actual total stream bitrate—not video alone—with sustained VPS upload capacity, leaving YouTube’s recommended headroom. |
| H.264, 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps recommended | Use the same capacity and headroom check; the recommendation is not a guarantee that a specific VPS will stay connected. |
Both bitrate figures are recommendations on YouTube Help’s encoder-settings page; its accessed version does not state a publication year. They are not measurements of your VPS. YouTube lists recommendations that vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate, so check the current table for the settings you use: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

If your measured sustained capacity is close to the configured total bitrate, reduce stream demand or resolve the capacity constraint before treating automatic retries as a fix. If capacity appears adequate, keep measuring during representative stream conditions: a single measurement away from the incident may miss a transient or shared-use constraint.

Use YouTube’s ingest status to test the other side
Open the affected stream in Live Control Room and align its health messages with the FFmpeg UTC timeline. YouTube’s error guidance distinguishes status and format problems; its encoder guidance covers the recommended RTMP/RTMPS settings, codecs, frame rates, keyframe timing, and bitrate. Check the exact message against the format and settings you configured rather than assuming every disconnect is a codec problem.
YouTube advises: “During the event, monitor the stream health and review messages.” Its encoder guidance also recommends testing beforehand. Compare the dashboard’s status with whether FFmpeg continued output and whether the local archive stayed healthy. A healthy-looking local output does not by itself prove that YouTube accepted the ingest, while an ingest error does not by itself prove the VPS route is at fault.
- Live Control Room reports a format or ingest error: Verify the stream format, encoder settings, and stream key against the current YouTube guidance, then use the exact error message to choose the correction.
- YouTube health changes at the same time as FFmpeg output stops: Check whether the local output also stopped, then compare encoder/resource evidence with the VPS network timeline.
- FFmpeg output looks healthy and VPS egress appears stable, but YouTube still reports ingest errors: Investigate the exact YouTube status and configuration rather than assigning responsibility to the VPS provider without evidence.
Classify the evidence before escalating
| Possible cause | Evidence to inspect | What the evidence helps distinguish |
|---|---|---|
| Input, source, or media issue | FFmpeg input errors, local archive, audio/video quality | Whether the media itself degrades or stops before transmission. |
| Encoder or resource issue | Encoder errors and CPU load | Whether local encoding falters at the time of the drop. |
| Output or protocol issue | Complete command, input/output protocols, FFmpeg build, stderr | Whether options are supported and being applied to the correct protocol and direction. |
| VPS outbound network issue | Measurements from the sending VPS, configured bitrate, headroom, correlated timestamps | Whether sustained egress capacity or connectivity degrades with the stream. |
| YouTube ingest or configuration issue | Live Control Room health messages, timestamped errors, stream settings | Whether YouTube reports an ingest or format problem while local output appears healthy. |
These are diagnostic categories, not mutually exclusive explanations. Use the full timeline to narrow the cause instead of selecting one from the city name or a single log line.

When to contact the VPS provider or YouTube
Escalate an evidenced outbound-path problem to the VPS operator
If the encoder and archive are healthy, configured bitrate is below measured sustained capacity with headroom, and drops align with outbound connection trouble, send the VPS or network operator the UTC incident times, relevant host metrics, and route or destination evidence gathered under its accepted diagnostic procedures. YouTube recommends contacting the internet service provider when outbound connection problems are found; for a hosted server, the relevant network operator is the VPS provider. Avoid claiming that a Kolkata route is at fault unless measurements from that actual host support it.
Use YouTube’s exact status when local output and egress look stable
If FFmpeg output appears healthy and the outbound path is stable but Live Control Room continues to report errors, investigate the exact status against stream format, key, and ingest configuration. A title, city, or generic reconnect message cannot establish a provider-side fault or a YouTube incident.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded videos looping as a 24/7 YouTube stream rather than diagnose and maintain your own FFmpeg process on a VPS, StreamNeo runs that playback in the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed.
