Yes—you can temporarily deactivate Facebook while continuing to use Messenger. Choose Deactivate account, not Delete account, and keep Messenger active or remain signed in to it when you confirm the change. Deactivation hides most of your Facebook profile without deleting your photos, posts, videos, or Messenger conversations. Meta says that using Messenger does not reactivate Facebook.
Deactivate Facebook, don’t delete it
The two options have very different results:

| Delete account | Starts the permanent account-deletion process and removes access to Facebook features. | Messenger access ends. |
If you want a break from Facebook but still need your conversations, select Deactivate account. Meta’s explanation is available in its Facebook deactivation help page.
Before deactivating Facebook
- Test Messenger. Open Messenger and send or receive a message before changing Facebook settings.
- Keep your login details available. Messenger may ask for the same email address or mobile number and password used for Facebook.
- Check Pages you control. A Page controlled only by your account may also be deactivated. If it must remain public, give another person full control first.
- Review additional profiles. Profiles associated with the Facebook account may be affected by deactivation.
- Check connected services. Some apps use Facebook Login. Deactivation and deletion can affect those connections differently, so make sure you can use another sign-in method where necessary.
Deactivation is not complete invisibility. Previously sent messages can remain visible to recipients, and some references to your name or activity may remain visible in places such as friends lists, groups, or Messenger.

The current standard route uses Accounts Center. Menu placement and wording can vary by app version, device, region, and account configuration.

- Open the Facebook app.
- Open Menu. On some iPhones, it is in the bottom-right; other layouts may place it elsewhere.
- Tap Settings & privacy, then Settings.
- Open Accounts Center.
- Tap Personal details.
- Tap Account ownership and control.
- Choose Deactivation or deletion.
- Select the Facebook account or profile you want to change.
- Choose Deactivate account.
- Tap Continue and complete the confirmation screens.
Before submitting the final confirmation, check the selected account and verify that the action still says Deactivate account. Do not continue if the screen says Delete account.
If Accounts Center is not shown in that location, Facebook may provide an alternative account-management route such as Profile Access and Control → Deactivation and Deletion. See Meta’s mobile instructions for the current options.
How to deactivate Facebook on a computer
- Open Facebook and click your profile picture.
- Choose Settings & privacy, then Settings.
- Open Accounts Center.
- Go to Personal details → Account ownership and control → Deactivation or deletion.
- Select the Facebook account or profile.
- Choose Deactivate account, then continue through the confirmation prompts.
Desktop navigation can change, but the destination is generally the same Accounts Center section. Meta’s deactivation and deletion guidance covers the underlying process.

After Facebook is deactivated, open the Messenger app—not the Facebook app—or use Messenger.com. If Messenger asks you to sign in, use the same Facebook email address or mobile number and password. Meta explains this sign-in process in its Messenger help documentation.

According to Meta, you can continue using existing Messenger conversations and chat with friends. Your Facebook profile picture may still appear in conversations. Friends—and in some cases other people—may still be able to find or message you in Messenger.
Using Messenger does not reactivate Facebook. Logging in to Facebook does reactivate it. A Facebook Login used with another service may also reactivate the Facebook account, so use Messenger directly when you want to keep Facebook deactivated.
What deactivation does not remove
- Messages you previously sent may remain in other people’s conversations.
- Your name may remain visible in friends lists or in content visible to group administrators.
- Your profile picture may continue to appear in Messenger conversations.
- You may remain searchable or reachable through Messenger.
- Pages controlled only by the deactivated account may also be deactivated.
- Additional profiles under the account may be affected.
Deactivation hides the Facebook profile from most people; it does not erase every past interaction or make you unreachable everywhere.

- Close and reopen Facebook, or visit your profile while logged out if practical. Your Facebook profile should no longer behave like an active public profile.
- Open Messenger directly.
- Send a test message to a trusted contact and confirm that it sends.
- Ask the contact whether they can reply.
- Check that you have not accidentally opened Facebook and signed back in.
Messenger remaining usable is the important practical test. The exact profile visibility seen by other people can vary by context, including previous messages, groups, Pages, and Messenger.

Troubleshooting
Messenger signed me out
Confirm that you deactivated Facebook rather than selected deletion. Then sign in to Messenger with the original Facebook email address or mobile number and password. If you forgot the password, reset it through Meta’s account-recovery process. You can also try Messenger.com.
Facebook became active again
You may have logged into Facebook rather than Messenger, or used Facebook Login in another service. A successful Facebook login reactivates the account. Deactivate it again if you intended only to use Messenger.
I cannot find the deactivation setting
Look in Accounts Center → Personal details → Account ownership and control → Deactivation or deletion. If several accounts or profiles are listed, confirm that you selected the intended Facebook account. Facebook may present a fallback such as Profile Access and Control → Deactivation and Deletion.

A Page controlled only by the deactivated account may also be deactivated. Reactivate Facebook or arrange full control for another person before deactivating if the Page needs to stay visible.

I selected Delete account
Deletion is not the correct choice for keeping Messenger. Meta says permanent Facebook deletion ends Messenger access. If you have only just started the deletion process, review Meta’s current cancellation instructions immediately; do not assume Messenger access will continue.

To return to Facebook, log in with the email address or mobile number associated with the account. You may need access to that login method and may need to reset your password. A successful Facebook login normally reactivates the account, although connected services or Pages may not behave identically in every case.
Regional note for EEA users
Meta documents additional Messenger-without-Facebook account choices for people in the European Economic Area. Those options are a regional exception and may not appear for users elsewhere. The standard deactivation route above applies where the ordinary Facebook account controls are available.

Can people still search for me on Messenger?
Yes. Meta says people may still be able to find or message you in Messenger even though your Facebook profile is deactivated.
Will old Messenger messages disappear?
No. Previously sent messages may remain visible in recipients’ conversations.
Can I deactivate Messenger too?
Messenger deactivation is a separate action that Meta says may be available after Facebook has been deactivated. It is not required to deactivate Facebook.
