Deactivation and deletion: the practical difference
The two controls sit together, but they solve different problems. Deactivation pauses the Facebook presence while preserving a route back. Deletion starts an account-removal process that becomes irreversible after Meta’s cancellation period. The comparison below follows the effects Meta describes in its official help guidance.
| Consideration | Deactivate account | Delete account |
|---|---|---|
| Profile and uploaded material | The profile cannot be seen or visited by other people. Photos, posts and videos are not deleted. | The profile, photos, posts, videos and other content added to the account are scheduled for permanent deletion. |
| Returning to Facebook | You can reactivate the account. | You cannot reactivate it after deletion is complete. A pending request can be cancelled during Meta’s stated cancellation period. |
| Messenger | Messenger can remain available while the account is deactivated; profile details can still appear in existing conversations. | Messenger is no longer available through the deleted account. |
| Facebook Login | Sign-ins to other apps may continue, depending on the settings and circumstances Meta describes. | Facebook Login stops working for services that used the account. |
| Meta Quest | The deactivated Facebook account cannot be used to access Meta Quest products or information. | Quest information, purchases and achievements associated with the account may be deleted; returns and store credits may be lost. |
| Additional profiles | Other profiles under the account are also affected by deactivation. | Other profiles under the account are also affected by deletion. |
| Messages already sent | Information such as messages already sent can remain visible to recipients. | Messages sent to friends may remain in their inboxes even when the account is deleted. |

Prepare before you request permanent deletion
Deletion is not a housekeeping step you can safely perform first and investigate later. Once the process is complete, information added to the Facebook account cannot be retrieved through that account. Work through these checks while you can still sign in.
Save Facebook information you may want later
Meta recommends downloading a copy of your Facebook information, including material such as photos and posts. Treat the download as an archive to inspect before you confirm deletion. Open the account’s information-download control, select the categories and date range you need, and keep the resulting files somewhere you control. The exact controls and labels can change with Facebook’s interface, so use the current download option displayed in your account rather than relying on an old screenshot.
Allow time to check the archive. Open a sample of photos, videos and documents, and make sure the files are readable before sending the deletion request. If several people rely on a page or profile you manage, tell them where essential records will be kept and who will handle the account afterward.
Audit Facebook Login connections
Make a list of every app and website where Facebook is the sign-in method. Deletion disables those Facebook Login connections. A service may still hold your account, but you may no longer be able to enter it with the Facebook button. Before deleting Facebook, sign in to each provider and add another sign-in method if it offers one, or follow that provider’s account-recovery process. Preserve usernames, recovery email addresses, passwords, subscription details and any files that the outside service stores.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Do not assume that remembering the email address is enough. Some providers require a password reset while you are still authenticated, a verified phone number or a support ticket that can take time. Test the replacement sign-in in a private browser window or on another device before you remove Facebook access.
Check Meta Quest access and purchases
If the Facebook account is used with Meta Quest, download the relevant Quest information before deletion as well. Meta warns that associated Quest information, app purchases and achievements can be affected; existing returns or store credits may be lost. Deactivation is not a workaround for this issue: Meta says a deactivated Facebook account cannot be used to access Quest products or information. Resolve any return, credit or purchase questions while the account is still usable.
Identify additional profiles
Review any additional profiles managed under the same account. Both deactivation and deletion affect those profiles, so a personal decision can also remove or hide profiles that other people rely on. Save information and arrange alternative administration before you continue.
Open the deactivation or deletion controls
Meta documents the main route through Accounts Center, the settings area used for connected account experiences. The labels can move as Facebook changes its interface; choose the closest matching item if your screen is worded slightly differently.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Select your profile picture at the top right of Facebook.
- Open Settings & privacy, then select Settings.
- Open Accounts Center.
- Under account settings, select Personal details.
- Select Account ownership and control.
- Open Deactivation or deletion.
- Select the account or profile you want to change.
- Choose Deactivate account for a temporary break or Delete account for permanent removal.
- Continue through the confirmation prompts shown for your account.
Accounts Center is described by Meta in About Accounts Center. The same Deactivation or deletion control is where you make the choice; do not assume that deactivation requires a separate, undocumented menu path.

What happens when you deactivate
Deactivation is designed for an account you may use again. Facebook hides the profile so people cannot see it or go to it, while the photos, posts and videos on the account are retained rather than deleted. Reactivation restores the account’s ability to be used; the deactivation itself is not a permanent-removal request.
Messenger may still work
Meta says Messenger can remain available during deactivation. Your profile information may still appear in conversations, and messages that you already sent can remain visible. If your goal is to stop every form of messaging or erase past conversations from other people’s inboxes, deactivation does not promise that result.
Other sign-ins may continue
Facebook Login for other apps may remain available during deactivation, subject to the settings and circumstances Meta describes. That makes deactivation less disruptive than deletion for a temporary absence, but it is not a guarantee that every connected service will behave identically. Check a service’s own access requirements before you deactivate if you need uninterrupted use.

A deactivated Facebook account cannot be used to access Meta Quest products or information. Plan for that loss of access even though the Facebook profile and its uploaded content are not being deleted.
What happens when you request permanent deletion
Choosing Delete account starts a removal process rather than merely hiding the profile. Meta says deletion removes the profile and content, ends Facebook Messenger use through that account and stops Facebook Login for apps that relied on it. After the process is complete, the account cannot be reactivated.
Use the fallback route if Accounts Center does not work
Meta also documents a deletion route from Facebook’s own information settings:
- Open Facebook settings and select Your Facebook information.
- Choose Deactivation and deletion.
- Select Delete account.
- Choose Continue to account deletion.
- Confirm the request and enter your password when Facebook asks for it.
This fallback is specifically documented for deletion. If you are trying to deactivate, return to the Accounts Center control and select the deactivation option shown there.

Deletion affects services outside Facebook
Once deletion is complete, any service that used Facebook Login loses that sign-in route. The outside provider may require a separate recovery process, and Facebook cannot restore access to that provider. This is why the preparation audit belongs before confirmation, not after the account disappears.
Deletion affects Quest data and commercial entitlements
Meta says information associated with Meta Quest can be deleted along with the account, including purchases and achievements. Returns and existing store credits may also be lost. Keep records needed for an open return or support case before you submit the request.

How to choose between the two options
Choose deactivation when the problem is time, attention or visibility rather than a final decision. It hides the profile and keeps your uploaded material, gives you a path back, and may allow Messenger and some Facebook Login connections to continue. It is the closer fit for a temporary break, a trial period away from social media or a situation in which you still need the account’s records.
Choose deletion only when you accept the loss of the profile, its uploaded content, Messenger through that account and Facebook Login access after the cancellation period. Deletion is the better fit when you no longer want the account and have already moved dependent services, saved needed information and settled Meta Quest matters.

Neither choice should be treated as a guaranteed eraser for information other people already received. Deactivation can leave sent messages visible, and deletion can leave messages in recipients’ inboxes. Account removal also does not control copies someone else downloaded, quoted or stored outside Facebook.
Cancellation, processing time and information that may remain
Meta’s Facebook Help Center says a deletion request can be cancelled by logging in within 30 days, while cautioning that the number of days available varies by region. Do not treat 30 days as a universal guarantee for every account or country. If you decide to keep the account, sign in and use the cancellation option before the period shown for your account ends.
Meta states: “After 30 days, your account and all of your information will be permanently deleted, and you won’t be able to retrieve your information.” That sentence appears on Meta’s undated Permanently delete your Facebook account help page and is immediately qualified by the regional variation in the cancellation period.
Meta also says removing everything you have posted can take up to 90 days from the beginning of the process. During that removal process, the material is not accessible to other Facebook users. Backup copies may remain after the stated removal period, and Meta says information can be retained for legal matters, terms violations or harm prevention. These operational windows describe Meta’s process; they are not a promise that every copy held elsewhere disappears on the same schedule.
Messages are a separate case
Deleting your account does not guarantee that every message you sent vanishes from other people’s inboxes. Recipients may retain those conversations, just as some records or backups can persist for operational or legal reasons. If a particular message creates a privacy or safety concern, handle that issue before deletion through the available conversation controls and the recipient, rather than assuming account removal will erase it.
Troubleshoot the choice before confirming
The menu is in a different place
Facebook changes menu placement and wording. Start from the profile picture, then look under Settings & privacy, Settings and Accounts Center. Within Accounts Center, the relevant hierarchy is Personal details → Account ownership and control → Deactivation or deletion. If Accounts Center does not provide the deletion control, use the Your Facebook information fallback documented above.
You are unsure which profile will be affected
Stop at the screen that asks you to select an account or profile. Confirm the identity shown there and review additional profiles under the same account. Choosing the wrong profile can hide or remove a different presence than the one you intended.

You need a connected app immediately
Do not delete Facebook while treating Facebook Login as a recoverable detail. Open the outside app or website first, add another authentication method if possible and verify that it works in a separate sign-in. If the provider offers no alternative, contact that provider before deleting Facebook.
You changed your mind
For a deactivated account, sign in again to reactivate it. For a deletion request, sign in during the cancellation period shown for your region and use the cancellation control. After deletion is complete, Meta says the account and its information cannot be retrieved.

Will people still see my profile if I deactivate Facebook?
Meta says people cannot see or go to a deactivated profile. However, information such as messages you already sent can remain visible in conversations, so profile hiding is not the same as removing every reference to you.
Can I use Messenger after deactivation?
Meta says Messenger can remain available while Facebook is deactivated. Profile details may still appear in existing conversations. If you need Messenger to stop working, deletion has a different outcome, but it also ends access to the Facebook account and cannot be undone after completion.
Does deleting Facebook delete messages I sent?
Not necessarily. Meta warns that messages sent to friends may remain in their inboxes. Deleting your account removes your access to Facebook; it does not guarantee that recipients’ copies or independent records disappear.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

Meta documents a cancellation period of 30 days, while noting that the available number of days varies by region. Log in during the period displayed for your account and use the cancellation option. Once deletion is complete, the account and its information cannot be retrieved.
How long does Facebook take to delete everything?
Meta says removing everything you have posted can take up to 90 days from the start of the process. It also says backup copies may remain and that some information can be retained for legal matters, terms violations or harm prevention.
What happens to apps where I used “Log in with Facebook”?
After deletion, Facebook Login no longer works for those services. Before deleting, add another sign-in method or contact each provider about recovery. The outside service, not Facebook, controls whether your account and data can be recovered.
Will deleting Facebook affect my Meta Quest purchases?
Meta says associated Quest information, app purchases and achievements may be deleted, and returns or store credits may be lost. Download relevant information and resolve open purchase, return or credit issues before requesting deletion.

Do additional Facebook profiles get affected?
Yes. Meta says deactivation and deletion affect other profiles under the same account. Review those profiles first and arrange alternative administration or save needed information.
A final decision checklist
- Choose deactivate when you want your profile hidden but expect to return.
- Choose delete only after saving Facebook and, where relevant, Meta Quest information.
- List every app or website using Facebook Login and establish another way into each one.
- Resolve Quest purchases, returns, achievements and store-credit questions before deletion.
- Review additional profiles that the same account controls.
- Record the cancellation deadline Facebook displays; the period can vary by region.
- Tell people who need to reach you that existing messages may remain visible even after account removal.
The safest sequence is therefore: archive what matters, replace dependent sign-ins, settle Quest-related issues, verify the selected profile, and only then submit the choice in Accounts Center.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is deactivation permanent?
No. Deactivation is intended as a reversible break. Your profile is hidden, your photos, posts and videos are retained, and you can reactivate the account by signing in again. Messenger or some Facebook Login connections may still work during the break.
Is Facebook deletion immediate?
No. A deletion request enters a cancellation period that Meta describes as 30 days, although Meta says the number of days varies by region. Meta also says removing posted material can take up to 90 days, with backups or legally retained information potentially lasting longer.
What should I save before deleting Facebook?
Download Facebook information such as photos and posts, and download relevant Meta Quest information if you use Quest. Also save details needed for apps that use Facebook Login, including recovery contacts, credentials, subscriptions and files held by those services.
Can I keep using Facebook Login after deactivation?
Meta says Facebook Login for other apps may remain available during deactivation, depending on the settings and circumstances. Do not rely on that for a critical service without checking the service’s own access requirements.
What if Accounts Center does not show deletion?
Use Facebook’s documented fallback: Settings, Your Facebook information, Deactivation and deletion, Delete account, Continue to account deletion, then confirm and enter your password if prompted. Menu labels can vary as Facebook updates its interface.
Will my other Facebook profiles disappear?
Meta says additional profiles under the same account are affected by both deactivation and deletion. Review them before choosing an option, save information you need and arrange another administrator where appropriate.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCan Meta keep any information after deletion?
Meta says backup copies may remain after the removal process and that information may be retained for legal matters, terms violations or harm prevention. Messages already delivered to other people may also remain in their inboxes.
The Bottom Line
Deactivate for a reversible break; delete only after exporting needed information, replacing Facebook Login, checking additional profiles and resolving Meta Quest purchases or credits. Meta gives a region-dependent cancellation period commonly described as 30 days and says posted material may take up to 90 days to be removed.
