How To Create Music With AI For Documentary Films

To create music with AI, write a brief that describes the scene, emotion, pace, instruments, vocals, and intended use; generate several versions; then edit and review the strongest one against your footage. For a documentary score, start with an instrumental when dialogue or factual narration must remain clear. Use a song generator for vocal material, an instrumental maker for a score bed, and mastering software only after you have an arrangement you want to finish.

Choose A Workflow That Fits The Music

Documentary music has to serve a specific edit: it may need to sit under speech, build toward a reveal, or leave space for natural sound. Decide what the cue must do before prompting. These tools have different documented workflows; a listed capability does not establish support for a particular genre, instrument, scene, or delivery requirement. Check the vendor’s site for any such specifics.

Tool Useful Starting Point Documented Workflow
Suno A complete song or a score idea that may need revisions Generates songs with vocals, lyrics, instrumentation, and production; supports editing, remixing, extensions, section replacement, and stem export. Free Plan does not include commercial rights or stem separation.
Eleven Music A full song or instrumental with producer-focused editing Generates songs with AI vocals, lyrics, or instrumental tracks; supports section editing, inpainting, genre transitions, and audio references. Commercial rights vary by plan and exclude film, TV, and studio games.
Soundverse AI Beat Maker An instrumental score bed to continue editing Generates instrumentals and offers WAV mixes, separated stems, and MIDI editing. Its Free Tier starts with 1,000 tokens upon signup; Creator & Pro lists commercial licenses.
Aiode New musical takes based on an uploaded track Audio-to-audio generation, section-level control, multiple takes, individual stems, and DAW drag-and-drop workflows. The product is described as being in beta; the Free plan allows 2 mix or region exports per month.
iZotope Ozone Mastering a finished mix in a DAW Advanced includes 20 mastering modules and Stem EQ; supports major DAWs through AU, AAX, and VST3 plug-in formats. It is a mastering suite, not a music-generation tool.

Build A Brief Before You Generate

Write down the cue’s job and constraints in plain language. Useful details include where the cue starts and stops, whether dialogue continues over it, how the emotional tone changes, and whether vocals would compete with speech. Describe musical qualities rather than asking for music that imitates a named artist or a specific recording.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Scene: What is visible or being explained?
  • Emotional movement: Should the cue stay restrained, gradually become tense, or resolve gently?
  • Role in the mix: Should it sit quietly under narration or carry a section without dialogue?
  • Sound: Name broad instrument families, texture, energy, and whether to include vocals.
  • Edit needs: Note the approximate cue length and any transition or ending the picture edit needs. Confirm that the chosen product can deliver the duration and file format you require.

For example, a prompt brief for a reflective archival sequence could read: “Instrumental documentary underscore for a reflective archival sequence; restrained and intimate at first, then gradually more hopeful; sparse piano-like notes and soft sustained textures; no vocals; keep the arrangement uncluttered beneath narration; finish with a gentle, resolved ending.” Treat the instrument and duration details as creative instructions, not guarantees about a generator’s output.

Follow The Creation And Edit Workflow

  1. Choose one starting tool. Use Suno or Eleven Music when you want a complete song or vocal option, Soundverse AI Beat Maker for a complete instrumental, or Aiode when you have a track to transform. If you already have a finished mix in a DAW, iZotope Ozone is the mastering option in this set.
  2. Generate from the brief. Keep the first prompt focused on scene, mood, broad sound, and vocal or instrumental choice. Do not overload it with contradictory directions. The tools support different controls, so only use controls that are actually available in the product you chose.
  3. Listen against the footage. Place the candidate under the intended scene and check whether it masks speech, changes mood too early, or fails to leave room for a visual transition. A track that sounds compelling alone may not fit the edit.
  4. Revise one problem at a time. If the cue is too busy, ask for a sparser arrangement; if its emotional shift is mistimed, make the desired change more explicit in the brief. Where available, use section editing or replacement in Suno or Eleven Music, or section-level control in Aiode. Recheck the changed passage in context.
  5. Prepare the handoff. Export the mix or stems only if the selected plan and workflow support the files you need. Soundverse lists WAV mixes, stems, and MIDI; Suno lists stem export but not on its Free Plan. Confirm current export availability, formats, and plan limits with the vendor before building a delivery workflow around them.
  6. Finish the mix deliberately. Balance the cue against dialogue and production sound in your editing or audio setup. If you use Ozone, apply mastering to the mix you intend to deliver; mastering does not repair a cue that is compositionally wrong for the scene.

Make A Vocal Song When The Story Calls For One

Lyrics can make a cue feel more specific, but they also draw attention away from narration and may imply a point of view. Use vocals when the sequence has room for them and the words serve the story. Suno and Eleven Music document song generation with vocals and lyrics; Rhymebook is a lyric workspace that supports genre, mood, theme, and song structure.

  1. Write the song’s purpose first. State what the lyric should communicate and what it must avoid asserting. Keep documentary claims grounded in the film’s reporting and sources.
  2. Draft and review the words. Use Rhymebook to generate or refine lyrics, then check every line for tone, clarity, and factual implication. Its listed export format is text, so treat it as a writing step rather than an audio export tool.
  3. Generate a song version. Take the approved lyric into Suno or Eleven Music and describe the arrangement and vocal role. If the scene needs speech to remain prominent, consider an instrumental instead.
  4. Edit in context. Listen to the vocal against the picture and dialogue. Replace or revise material that distracts, overstates what the film establishes, or clashes with the scene’s point of view.

Check Rights, Consent, And Authorship

Before using generated music in a documentary, read the selected product’s current terms for your plan and intended distribution. Suno’s Free Plan does not include commercial rights. Eleven Music’s commercial rights vary by plan and exclude film, TV, and studio games, so its listed terms do not establish permission for a documentary film use. Soundverse lists commercial licenses for Creator & Pro; check the vendor’s terms for the exact use. For other products, the information here does not establish commercial permission. Obtain consent for voices or recordings you upload or ask a system to reproduce, and check each platform’s terms for uploaded material and generated output.
