Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →You can create a YouTube radio station by sending a continuous audio-and-visual program to YouTube Live through an encoder. In YouTube Studio, create or schedule an encoder stream, copy its server URL and stream key into your encoder, check the preview, and start broadcasting. The harder parts are keeping the feed running, planning for stream archives, and securing rights for music in both the live broadcast and any recording.
Decide what “radio station” means for your channel
A YouTube radio station is a format, not a separate YouTube account type: viewers tune in to a live stream built around audio programming, often with a still image, visualizer, or looping video. You can present live-hosted programming or send prerecorded material through a playlist-style playout workflow. In either case, an encoder is the bridge between your program feed and YouTube Live.
Before setting up, decide whether you need to host live, loop prerecorded material, publish an archive, or combine those approaches. This affects your encoder or playout choice, monitoring needs, session schedule, and rights clearance.
Check that your channel can go live
YouTube’s live-streaming getting-started guidance, checked on October 3, 2026, says a channel must be verified, have no live-stream restrictions in the previous 90 days, and meet a minimum age of 16. Requirements and availability can change, so check YouTube’s current live setup guidance before you plan a launch.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Also decide whether the stream should be public, unlisted, or private, and whether you intend to monetize it. Confirm these choices in Live Control Room before going live rather than assuming a reused stream setup has the right settings.
Choose an encoder and prepare the program feed
Software encoder
A software encoder is the usual starting point for a modest setup: it runs on a computer and sends the audio and video program to YouTube. It is a lower-cost route than buying dedicated hardware, but the computer must be capable of encoding the feed and remain powered, connected, and stable for the broadcast.
Hardware encoder
A hardware encoder is an optional choice for higher-production workflows. It is a separate device, so it adds equipment cost; YouTube supports hardware as well as software encoder workflows. The official guidance cited here does not establish a best model or compare specific products.

Set the encoder to match your source and YouTube’s current guidance
Use the current encoder settings YouTube recommends for your chosen resolution and frame rate. Configure the video resolution, frame rate, bitrate, keyframe interval, and audio settings in the encoder, and make sure your upload connection can sustain the outgoing feed. Exact recommended values can vary with the selected format and YouTube’s changing guidance, so do not rely on a generic preset without checking it against the current encoder instructions.

For a radio-style show, assemble the audio and visual feed before connecting it to YouTube. A still image or looping visual can accompany audio, but the audio and visuals both need to be cleared for the way you intend to use them.
Create or schedule the stream in YouTube Studio
- Open Live Control Room. In YouTube Studio, choose Create → Go Live.
- Create a stream or schedule one. Use the stream setup flow to create a broadcast now, or use Manage to schedule a future stream. Scheduling can create an upcoming watch page that viewers can share and set reminders for.
- Review stream settings. Check title, description, visibility, audience, monetization, latency, DVR, and auto-start/auto-stop choices where available. If reusing settings, confirm each one rather than assuming it carried over appropriately.
- Copy the server URL and stream key. Live Control Room provides the connection information the encoder needs. Treat the stream key like a password: do not publish or share it, and reset it if you think it has been exposed.
- Enter the connection details in your encoder. Paste the server URL and stream key into the matching server or streaming fields in your encoder. Select the prepared audio/video source and confirm the encoder’s output settings.
- Start the encoder and inspect the preview. Wait for YouTube to receive the feed. Check picture, audio level, synchronization, and playback from the watch page before you make the stream public or announce it.
- Start the broadcast. When the preview is correct, go live in Live Control Room if your configuration requires it. Test the watch page from another device, including a phone, and confirm that viewers can hear and see the program.
Plan continuity, sessions, and archives
A computer-based encoder requires a powered computer, a stable internet connection, and a plan for recovering from a crash or disconnection. For a continuous channel, arrange monitoring and decide who will restart the feed or how the playout system will recover if the encoder or connection stops.

Do not treat one very long stream as a reliable archive strategy. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived; streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. If you need a recording, plan shorter sessions or a separate archive workflow, and verify that a local recording is actually being written and saved.
One long session avoids repeated scheduling and restart work, but creates archive risk. Shorter scheduled sessions make archive planning more manageable, but require someone or something to handle transitions and restarts. Choose based on whether continuity or dependable session recordings matter more to your channel.
Clear music and visual rights before launch
YouTube’s livestream terms place the rights responsibility on the person providing the content. The terms say: “You represent and warrant that you have all necessary rights for the exploitation of the Live Content on the Google Services throughout the world, including, without limitation, music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers (including public performance licenses) and any other royalty participants.” Check with the relevant rights holders or licensing professionals that your permissions cover the territories, live transmission, and any archive you intend to offer.

Owning a recording does not by itself establish that you have permission to broadcast it. A generic “royalty-free” label is not enough to confirm that a track is cleared for your particular YouTube live and archived use; review the actual license terms.
YouTube says a live stream can be terminated for copyright or Community Guidelines strikes, and an archived stream can receive a Content ID claim after the event. A live broadcast is not exempt from copyright enforcement. Keep documentation for your permissions and have a replacement or shutdown plan if a rights issue is raised.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Monitor the broadcast and handle common failures
- YouTube receives no signal: Confirm that the encoder is running, the correct server URL and stream key are entered, and the selected input is active. If the key may be compromised, reset it in YouTube’s stream settings and update the encoder.
- The preview appears, but viewers cannot access the stream: Check visibility, scheduled start time, and whether the broadcast has actually been started in Live Control Room. Test the watch page while signed out or on another device.
- Audio is silent, distorted, or out of sync: Check that the encoder is using the intended audio input and that its audio level is not clipping. Listen to the YouTube preview or watch page, not only the source computer.
- Video stutters or drops: Check the encoder’s outgoing settings against YouTube’s current guidance and verify that the internet connection can sustain the feed. Reduce the output load if the computer or connection cannot maintain it.
- The stream stops unexpectedly: Check power, computer sleep settings, encoder status, and internet connectivity. For an always-on setup, monitor the watch page and have a restart procedure; do not assume YouTube’s event guidance guarantees continuous uptime.
- The archive is missing or claimed: Check the stream duration and archive settings. A stream over 12 hours may not be captured at all, and an archive can receive a Content ID claim after the live event.
Understand monetization limits
For eligible creators and streams, YouTube identifies ads, Super Chat and Super Stickers, and channel memberships as possible monetization features, subject to availability and YouTube’s requirements. Ad slots are not guaranteed to serve, so do not build a station’s budget on the assumption that every slot will produce an ad or revenue.
