You can create a YouTube 24/7 stream with FFmpeg on Ubuntu by sending a looping video and audio feed from an Ubuntu computer or VPS to the RTMPS ingest address and stream key shown in YouTube Studio. First confirm your channel is eligible for live streaming; then choose settings your host’s upload connection can sustain, run FFmpeg under a process supervisor such as systemd, and test the complete stream before relying on it.

This guide is for prerecorded media files, not a live camera feed. The workflow is the same for creators in India as elsewhere; what matters is the actual host’s sustained upload performance. No India-specific VPS provider, pricing, or performance comparison is established here.

1. Check YouTube live-stream eligibility and create a stream

Before configuring Ubuntu, verify that the channel can go live. YouTube says the channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. Streams also need to comply with YouTube’s policies. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.

  1. Sign in to the YouTube channel that will host the stream and open YouTube Studio.
  2. Use the live-stream creation flow to create or select a stream. Choose the intended title, visibility, and other stream details in Studio.
  3. In the stream settings, locate the server/ingest URL and stream key. You will use these in FFmpeg; keep the key private as you would a password.

The exact Studio layout and labels can change. Use the ingest address and key displayed for your own stream rather than copying credentials from an example or another channel.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

2. Choose an always-on Ubuntu host

FFmpeg can run on an Ubuntu computer you keep powered on and connected, or on an Ubuntu VPS. A VPS is one way to avoid leaving a home computer running, but the available evidence does not establish a preferred provider, India-specific host ranking, current VPS prices, or regional upload performance. You still manage the FFmpeg process and monitor the stream when using a VPS.

Host What it suits Trade-offs to plan for
Ubuntu computer you control Creators who already have a suitable machine and can keep it powered, connected, and maintained. Power, home internet stability, machine restarts, and local maintenance can interrupt the stream.
Ubuntu VPS Creators who want the streaming process to run on a remotely hosted machine rather than a home computer. Provider terms, price, sustained upload quality, and recovery options vary; verify them directly and test the actual machine. You remain responsible for FFmpeg configuration and stream monitoring.

Do not assume a server located in India will automatically perform better. Test sustained upload bandwidth from the machine that will run FFmpeg, and choose a video profile with headroom for normal variation. A brief speed test is useful, but an end-to-end stream test is the better check for the actual path to YouTube.

3. Install FFmpeg and check the build

Install FFmpeg using the package source appropriate for your Ubuntu release, or confirm that it is already installed. The available evidence does not establish the current FFmpeg package version for every Ubuntu release, and FFmpeg options can vary with version and build configuration. Check the installed version and its supported input/output formats before building a long-running command.

ffmpeg -version
ffmpeg -formats
ffmpeg -encoders

Consult the FFmpeg documentation for the installed revision and verify that your build supports the file’s container and codecs as well as the intended output encoder. Do not assume one command will suit every media file: input codecs, audio and video stream durations, looping behavior, and build capabilities affect the correct command.

4. Choose settings for YouTube and your connection

YouTube’s current encoder guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR), and frame rates up to 60 fps. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Its resolution-specific bitrate guidance varies by codec, resolution, and frame rate; use the live table on YouTube’s encoder settings page rather than treating one bitrate as universal.

  • Resolution and frame rate: Choose the output your media and host can sustain. Higher resolution or frame rate generally requires more upload capacity. Avoid selecting settings solely because the source file has them if the connection cannot carry the stream reliably.
  • Video bitrate: Use YouTube’s current recommendation for the exact resolution, frame rate, and codec combination. Leave capacity for connection variation; a nominal upload speed equal to the target bitrate leaves little margin.
  • Rate control: Use CBR as YouTube recommends for ingest.
  • Keyframes: Set a two-second interval where the selected encoder permits it, and do not exceed four seconds.
  • Audio: Use AAC or MP3 and confirm the media actually contains the audio you expect to send.
  • Protocol: Prefer RTMPS where available. YouTube describes it as RTMP over SSL.

These are YouTube ingest recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular Ubuntu host or FFmpeg build will handle a chosen profile. YouTube’s encoder page should be treated as the source of truth for current bitrate rows.

5. Build the FFmpeg input and RTMPS output

The command must match your source file and installed FFmpeg build. For a continuous prerecorded stream, configure the input so the intended media repeats, map the desired video and audio streams, select compatible encoders and settings, and send the result to the RTMPS server URL with the stream key supplied by YouTube Studio. Confirm loop semantics and stream mapping against your FFmpeg version and media; this article does not claim a universal, tested command line.

Keep credentials out of public scripts, repositories, screenshots, tutorials, and shell history. A command that embeds the key directly can leave it visible to other local users or in logs and history. Prefer a private configuration with restrictive permissions or another secret-handling method appropriate to your host. If a key is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio before restarting the stream.

For implementation ideas, a public GitHub example demonstrates looping media on an Ubuntu VPS with systemd. It is an example of an operating pattern, not official YouTube guidance or a universally validated recipe; review any code and adapt it to your media, credentials, and installed software.

6. Keep FFmpeg running with systemd

A service manager can restart FFmpeg after the process exits. One public Ubuntu/VPS example uses a systemd service with Restart=always. That setting addresses process exit; it does not restore a failed host, repair invalid media or credentials, override account enforcement, or bring back an unavailable internet connection.

  1. Create a service definition for the FFmpeg command using a dedicated account where practical, with access only to the media and private configuration it needs.
  2. Set the command, working directory, and restart behavior deliberately. Review systemd’s service behavior and the command’s exit conditions rather than copying a unit file blindly.
  3. Reload systemd after changing the unit, enable the service if it should start with the host, then start it and check its status. Typical administrative commands are sudo systemctl daemon-reload, sudo systemctl enable --now your-stream.service, and sudo systemctl status your-stream.service; replace the example unit name with your own.
  4. Inspect recent service output with sudo journalctl -u your-stream.service -n 100 --no-pager. Check logs again after any restart or stream interruption.

A restart loop can repeatedly retry a broken command or inaccessible file. Review logs and correct the underlying problem instead of assuming that a restart policy alone makes a stream reliable.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

7. Test the full stream and monitor it

YouTube advises testing before going live and checking stream-health messages. Use a test with audio and movement similar to the planned program; a still frame or silent file will not reveal every issue in the real content.

  1. Start the FFmpeg service and confirm it stays active rather than exiting immediately.
  2. Open the stream’s page in YouTube Studio and confirm the preview appears and the audio is audible.
  3. Review YouTube’s stream-health feedback for ingest or encoding warnings. Check that the displayed resolution and motion look as expected.
  4. Review systemd status and FFmpeg logs for connection failures, missing streams, encoder errors, or repeated restarts.
  5. Allow the test to run long enough to reveal stability problems, then verify recovery behavior by checking logs and the Studio preview after any planned controlled restart.

Do not treat a successful initial connection as proof of uninterrupted 24/7 operation. Monitor the host, network, service logs, and YouTube stream health after launch.

8. Troubleshoot common failures

Symptom Likely area to check Next action
FFmpeg exits immediately Invalid command option, unsupported codec/container, missing media file, or permissions. Read the service journal and run a controlled foreground test; verify the installed FFmpeg build, paths, file access, and stream mapping.
YouTube does not receive the stream Wrong ingest URL or key, key formatting, network access, or RTMP/RTMPS configuration. Re-copy the server URL and key from the correct YouTube Studio stream, confirm the intended protocol, and inspect FFmpeg’s connection error. Replace the key if it may have been exposed.
Video arrives but has no sound Source file may lack audio, wrong audio stream mapped, or unsupported/incorrect audio encoding. Inspect the source streams and FFmpeg output mapping; use AAC or MP3 and test with audible content.
Stream health reports instability or dropped frames Chosen bitrate may exceed sustained upload capacity, or the host/network may be inconsistent. Measure from the actual host, reduce the profile to a stable YouTube-supported resolution/bitrate, and repeat the test with the real program.
Stream stops after a process crash Service may not be enabled, restart policy may be absent, or FFmpeg may be failing repeatedly. Check systemd status and logs, fix the underlying error, then verify that the service starts after host reboot if that is required.
Service is active but viewers see a frozen or repeated image Input loop or stream mapping may not behave as intended, or the source itself may be static. Test with moving video and audio; review input loop behavior and the selected media streams for the installed FFmpeg version.

9. Copyright and reused-content checks

Continuous playback does not change YouTube’s rules for the material being streamed. Before using a documentary, film, music track, or other recording, confirm that you own the necessary rights or have permission covering the intended use and livestream distribution. A file being available online, or a stream being labeled educational, does not by itself establish permission. Check YouTube’s applicable policies and any rights-holder restrictions before scheduling a long-running broadcast.

Copyright compliance and monetization eligibility are separate questions. Repeatedly streaming material you do not control can lead to claims, restrictions, or interruption, and a channel’s eligibility for monetization is determined under YouTube’s monetization policies rather than by the fact that FFmpeg is running continuously.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you would rather not maintain an Ubuntu host and FFmpeg service yourself, StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live 24/7 from uploaded videos. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay running at home; StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud, supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. The Monthly price is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo streams to YouTube only and plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting a camera feed. Start the free day with StreamNeo.
