If you want to make a custom Snapchat effect, you will usually create a Lens, not a traditional Filter. Snapchat no longer offers custom event Filters for occasions such as weddings and birthdays; its current alternative is to build an AR Lens with Lens Studio.
This guide explains which Snapchat feature you need, how to create a simple Lens, how to make one for an event or brand, how to test and share it, and when paid Snapchat advertising makes more sense.
Filter or Lens: Which One Do You Need?
Snapchat uses “Filter” and “Lens” for different features. A Filter is generally a post-capture overlay. A Lens is an interactive camera effect that can track faces, bodies, hands, surfaces, or the surrounding world.

Can You Still Make a Custom Snapchat Event Filter?
Not through Snapchat’s former custom-event-Filter route. Snapchat specifically says that custom Filters for special occasions such as weddings and birthday parties are no longer available. For a personalized event effect, create a Lens instead.
An event Lens can include the event name, date, colors, logo, animation, or an interactive face effect. It may not behave exactly like the old 2D post-capture overlay because a Lens is an AR camera experience.
What You Need Before Starting
- A Snapchat account.
- Access to Lens Studio.
- A clear concept, such as a face overlay, event frame, color treatment, or interactive effect.
- Optional images, transparent graphics, animation, audio, fonts, or 3D models.
- A compatible phone or browser for the creation route you choose.
- Permission to use every uploaded logo, photograph, character, font, song, and 3D asset.
Lens Studio is described by Snapchat as free, and you do not need a business account to create a Lens. Creation is free, however, does not mean that professional production or paid advertising is free.

Snapchat currently describes three creation routes:
- Mobile Lens Studio: aimed at everyday creators and personal projects.
- Web Lens Studio: a browser-based option for simpler creations.
- Desktop Lens Studio: intended for professional developers and more complex AR experiences.
Availability and interface labels can change by operating system, account, geography, and product rollout. Check Snapchat’s current Lens creation instructions before choosing a route.

How to Create a Simple Snapchat Lens
Mobile or web method
- Open Snapchat’s current Lens Studio creation experience.
- Sign in with your Snapchat account.
- Choose a template or start a Lens from scratch.
- Select an effect type, such as a face effect, image overlay, color effect, or simple interactive experience.
- Customize the text, graphics, colors, animation, and other available assets.
- Preview the effect while you work.
- Test it on a supported phone when the project depends on the real camera, tracking, or device performance.
- Save or publish the Lens using the current in-product controls.
- Share it using the generated link, Snapcode, or eligible Snapchat discovery surfaces.
The exact buttons may change, but the basic workflow is template or blank project, customization, preview, testing, publication, and sharing.
Desktop method for advanced projects
- Download Lens Studio from Snap’s official Lens Studio resources.
- Sign in with Snapchat.
- Start from a template, sample project, or blank project.
- Import or create the required 2D and 3D assets.
- Configure the appropriate tracking, such as face, body, hand, image, surface, world, or segmentation tracking.
- Add behaviors, animation, audio, or scripting when needed.
- Preview the Lens on your computer and a real device.
- Check readability, orientation, loading behavior, tracking, and performance across more than one phone.
- Complete the current publishing information and submit or publish according to Snapchat’s rules.
- Distribute the published Lens through its link, Snapcode, or eligible discovery placement.

Start with one narrow idea:
- A static or lightly animated face overlay.
- A branded event frame.
- A simple color effect.
- A template-based face Lens.
- One interactive trigger rather than a complete game.
Avoid beginning with a large 3D scene, multiple tracking systems, heavy shaders, uncompressed media, or complex multiplayer behavior. More assets and scripting can increase loading time and reduce runtime performance.
How to Make a Wedding or Event Lens
- Define a simple visual system: event name, date, colors, logo, and optional hashtag.
- Choose a face or screen-overlay template.
- Add appropriately sized transparent graphics where necessary.
- Keep text away from the edges and from areas covered by Snapchat controls.
- Use animation only when it improves the experience.
- Test different faces, lighting conditions, skin tones, camera distances, and phone orientations.
- Publish the Lens.
- Place its link or Snapcode on invitations, signs, menus, event programs, or the event’s digital page.
Call this an event Lens, not a custom event Filter. That terminology reflects Snapchat’s current product distinction.

- Bright, dim, indoor, and outdoor lighting.
- Different faces, skin tones, glasses, hats, and camera distances.
- Portrait and landscape behavior where relevant.
- Text contrast and readability on small screens.
- Tracking when the subject moves.
- Loading time, memory use, frame rate, and overheating.
- Whether the effect still works when Snapchat’s normal controls are visible.
How to Publish and Share a Lens
After publication, Snapchat’s documented distribution routes include:
- Direct Lens link: send it in a message, email, invitation, or event page.
- Snapcode: print or display the code on signs, menus, posters, or invitations.
- Lens discovery: eligible Lenses may appear through Snapchat discovery surfaces such as Lens Explorer.
Publication does not guarantee approval, universal availability, Lens Explorer placement, or algorithmic discovery. Moderation, eligibility, account status, and region can affect how a Lens is displayed. If you need limited testing or restricted visibility, check the current publishing options inside Lens Studio rather than assuming every Lens can remain permanently private.
How to Use an Existing Snapchat Filter
If you only want to use an existing effect, you do not need Lens Studio:
- Open Snapchat and create a Snap.
- Swipe left or right to select an available Filter.
- Use the layer icon if you want to combine multiple Filters where Snapchat permits it.

Do Businesses Need a Sponsored AR Campaign?
A business does not need paid advertising merely to create a branded Lens. A basic Lens can be built in Lens Studio and shared by link or Snapcode.

Paid Snapchat advertising is a separate route for brands that need targeting, campaign delivery, reach, or reporting. Snapchat’s business documentation describes a workflow involving its Lens Web Builder, a Lens Folder, publication of a Sponsored AR Filter, and selection in Ads Manager. Current campaign prices, minimums, and delivery costs should be checked inside Snapchat for Business and Ads Manager; do not assume that free Lens creation includes paid distribution.
For a complex branded experience, a professional AR creator or agency may help with 3D design, interaction, testing, licensing, publication, and post-launch support. Before hiring one, ask for live Lens examples, ownership terms, revision limits, testing scope, publication responsibility, reporting, and support arrangements.

“I cannot find the custom event Filter option.”
This is expected under Snapchat’s current policy for special-event Filters. Create an event Lens instead.
Lens Studio will not open
Check that you are using the current official version or web route, that your device and browser meet its requirements, and that you are signed in to the intended Snapchat account. For a simple project, try the mobile or web workflow instead of the desktop application.
The effect is misaligned
Check the selected tracking type, asset anchor, scale, rotation, and transparent-image dimensions. Test movement, different faces, and different distances from the camera rather than adjusting the design against one static preview.
Assets do not appear
Confirm that the files were imported into the project, assigned to the correct object or material, visible in the scene, and supported by the current Lens Studio workflow. Also check whether an asset is hidden behind another object or excluded by a device-specific condition.

The Lens is slow
Reduce unnecessary textures, large files, complex geometry, simultaneous tracking systems, and continuous animation. Compress assets where appropriate and test on a real phone.
The Lens works on one phone but not another
Compare operating-system support, camera capabilities, tracking support, screen orientation, lighting, and performance. Avoid promising universal compatibility until the Lens has been tested on the devices your audience actually uses.
The published Lens cannot be found
Use its direct link or Snapcode first. Confirm that publishing completed and that you are checking the correct Snapchat account. Public discovery is not automatic, and eligibility or regional availability may affect Lens Explorer placement.
Do You Need to Pay?
- Making a basic Lens yourself: Snapchat describes Lens Studio as free.
- Hiring a creator or agency: You may pay for design, 3D modeling, development, testing, or production.
- Promoting it to a targeted audience: Use Snapchat advertising and check current pricing in Ads Manager.
- Buying third-party templates: Confirm compatibility, licensing, and ownership of every included font, image, song, and 3D asset.
Snap also describes a Lens Creator Rewards Program, but eligibility, payout rules, and geographic availability can change. Treat potential rewards as an opportunity, not guaranteed income.

For most people searching for “how to create a Snapchat filter,” the current solution is to create a Lens in Lens Studio. Use Snapchat’s built-in Filters when you only need a standard overlay. Use a Lens for custom artwork, face effects, event graphics, animation, branding, or AR interaction. Start with a template, test on real devices, and share the finished experience by link or Snapcode rather than relying on automatic discovery.
