You can run children’s stories as a continuous YouTube Live program by clearing the rights to every part of each story, assembling a continuous audiovisual playlist, and sending it to YouTube through an encoder or a cloud streaming service. First enable YouTube Live, then test the stream and plan separately for keeping the live feed running and retaining a replay: YouTube warns that streams over 12 hours may not be captured.
1. Clear the rights to every part of each story
Public-domain status applies to specific works and versions, not automatically to everything associated with a familiar tale. A story being old, appearing online, or being hosted by a digital library does not establish that its translation, illustrations, narration, or music can all be reused.
YouTube says, “You are responsible for verifying that a work is in the public domain before you upload it to YouTube.” The U.S. Copyright Office says works published in the United States before January 1, 1931 are in the public domain because their copyright has expired. Project Gutenberg’s guide likewise says qualifying works published in 1930 or earlier have no U.S. copyright restrictions as of 2026, subject to its conditions. Neither statement establishes the status of a particular edition in every country.
For each item, record its source, edition or recording, creator where known, rights basis, and the territories where you plan to distribute it. Check the law relevant to those territories; copyright duration can depend on the work and its circumstances. For U.S. works created on or after January 1, 1978, the general term is the author’s life plus 70 years, with different rules for anonymous, pseudonymous, and work-made-for-hire works. See the U.S. Copyright Office’s copyright guidance, Project Gutenberg’s copyright guide, and YouTube’s copyright guidance.

Check each component, not just the story title
- Text: Identify the exact edition and translation. A public-domain original does not make a recent translation free to reuse.
- Illustrations: Confirm rights to each image, including scans or restored artwork. A public-domain text may be paired with copyrighted illustrations.
- Narration: Use a recording you made or one whose recording and performance rights allow this use. The underlying story’s status does not clear someone else’s audio performance.
- Music and effects: Omit them unless you have permission or a suitable license. Background music can create a rights issue even when the story itself is clear.
2. Build a continuous audiovisual program
Prepare a visual sequence from cleared story pages, illustrations, or other material you have rights to use. Add cleared narration if desired, then arrange the pieces into a continuous program or playlist. YouTube’s setup documentation does not require this particular production format; it is a practical way to make a pre-recorded story stream feel continuous.
Before scheduling a long run, check that the sequence plays end to end, that transitions do not leave unintended silent or blank gaps, and that the audio is audible without clipping. Keep a local copy of the finished files and a record of the rights for every asset. A local backup recording of the live feed is also useful if you need a complete archive.
3. Enable YouTube Live and choose an encoder
YouTube requires a verified channel and no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. First-time live-stream enablement may take up to 24 hours, so do this before your planned launch. You can send the program with software encoding on a computer or with a standalone hardware encoder; dedicated hardware is optional.

- Connect the encoder: Copy the stream URL and stream key from YouTube into the corresponding fields in your encoder, then start the encoder and check the Live Control Room for an incoming signal.
Exact labels and screen layouts can change. YouTube’s current instructions for getting started with live streaming and setting up an encoder are the authority for the interface available to your account. Treat the stream key like a password: do not publish or share it, and reset it if it is exposed.
4. Set encoder quality and test the connection
Choose a resolution and bitrate your internet connection can sustain steadily, then test the whole workflow before leaving it unattended. YouTube recommends constant bitrate and a two-second keyframe interval; it says not to exceed four seconds. Its settings table lists 2 Mbps as the recommended bitrate for 720p at 30 fps. That is one example, not a universal setting: use YouTube’s current table for your chosen resolution and frame rate.
- Use a supported streaming protocol and codec from YouTube’s current encoder guidance; YouTube documents RTMP/RTMPS options.
- Set the encoder to constant bitrate and a two-second keyframe interval, unless the current YouTube guidance for your setup says otherwise.
- Test at the quality you intend to stream. A connection that works for a short preview may not sustain a long broadcast reliably.
- Watch YouTube Studio’s stream health during the test. Check for dropped frames, interruptions, audio problems, and whether the feed resumes as expected after a brief network disruption.
YouTube transcodes incoming streams into output formats for viewers, so the encoder’s incoming settings are not a promise that every viewer will watch at that same resolution. See YouTube’s live encoder settings for its current recommendations and supported options.

5. Plan for the live session and the replay separately
A stream that remains live is not necessarily a complete replay afterward. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, while streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. As YouTube puts it: “If your live stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” If retaining a full version matters, make a local recording rather than relying on YouTube’s archive alone. Check YouTube’s archive guidance before deciding how to handle long sessions.
One operational option is to run shorter sessions and plan how viewers will encounter the change between sessions. Confirm how each session appears on your channel and whether the transition suits your audience; a sequence of sessions is not the same thing as one uninterrupted broadcast.

6. Keep rights and stream health under review
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content matches. If it identifies material that continues to appear in the broadcast, it may interrupt or terminate the stream. Even licensed third-party material may require the rights holder to allowlist your channel in Content ID. Keep the rights record accessible, and check YouTube Studio if a live session is interrupted. Rights clearance and Content ID matching are separate operational concerns: having permission does not guarantee an automated match will be resolved without action.

7. Choose how to keep the stream running
The practical choice is between operating an encoder yourself and using a cloud service that supports the pre-recorded YouTube Live workflow you need. Compare whether a computer must stay on, how interruptions and restarts are handled, whether a local backup is available, the supported inputs and settings, and the cost over the period you expect to stream. YouTube documents software and hardware encoder routes and lists cloud services for continuous pre-recorded streaming; it does not declare one approach best for every creator.
| Approach | What stays running | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Software encoder | A computer running the encoder and your program | No dedicated hardware encoder is required, but the computer, encoder, and internet connection must remain available for an unattended run. |
| Standalone hardware encoder | The encoder and its connection to the program and network | Hardware is optional. Check the device’s current compatibility and settings against YouTube’s requirements before buying. |
| Cloud streaming service | The provider’s cloud system runs the stream | Confirm that the service supports your pre-recorded YouTube Live workflow, recovery behavior, input formats, and any archive needs; costs and capabilities vary by provider. |
Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos, so a computer, OBS, or home internet connection does not have to stay on. Upload the story program, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; StreamNeo loops uploaded videos and playlists. It streams to YouTube, not from a camera.
Every slot includes one always-on stream, 10 GB of storage per slot pooled across active slots, 24/7 looping and playlists, automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream, and support from the StreamNeo team. Uploaded files stream as made, up to 4K at 60 fps, with no re-encode and no quality tiers. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. After that, choose a duration: daily, weekly, monthly, six months, or yearly. UPI and cards are available in India; card checkout is available worldwide. For five or more slots, contact support. See the StreamNeo pricing page for plan details.

Quick Recap
Troubleshooting common problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| You cannot start a live stream | The channel is not verified, has a live-stream restriction in the previous 90 days, or first-time activation is still pending. | Check channel eligibility and allow up to 24 hours after enabling live streaming for first-time access. |
| YouTube receives no signal | The encoder is not running, or its stream URL or key does not match the stream in Live Control Room. | Compare the encoder destination and key with the current stream’s details in YouTube Studio. If the key was exposed, reset it and update the encoder. |
| The feed buffers or loses frames | The chosen bitrate may exceed what the connection can sustain, or the connection may be unstable. | Check stream health, test the connection, and reduce the encoder settings to a level it can sustain. Use YouTube’s current encoder table rather than relying on a single bitrate example. |
| The live stream is interrupted for a rights match | YouTube has detected third-party material in the feed. | Check Studio for the match, remove or replace material you cannot use, and keep documentation for any licensed material. Ask the rights holder about Content ID allowlisting when appropriate. |
| The replay is incomplete or missing | The stream may have exceeded YouTube’s 12-hour archiving threshold. | Record a local backup if you need a complete replay, and consult YouTube’s archive guidance when planning session length. |
| The program stops when left unattended | A local computer, encoder, or network connection may have stopped or disconnected. | Test unattended operation and recovery before launch. If operating locally, ensure the computer and connection remain available; if using a cloud service, confirm its recovery behavior for your workflow. |
