You can loop a meditation video with FFmpeg and send it to a YouTube Live broadcast, but a command alone does not make a stream fault-tolerant or guarantee it will run forever. First clear the music rights, set up YouTube Live, test the encoder settings, and plan how you will monitor and recover the stream.

What you need before going live

  • A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled. YouTube says first-time activation may take up to 24 hours.
  • An FFmpeg build with the encoders you plan to use, such as H.264 video and AAC audio.
  • A video file containing the meditation visuals and music, or separate video and audio files.
  • A stable computer and internet connection for a local setup, or an always-on host you administer.
  • Music rights that cover the planned livestream and, if you keep the archive, the recording as well.

FFmpeg can repeatedly read a file and send it to YouTube, but it does not by itself monitor the host, restart a failed process, or guarantee uninterrupted delivery. Treat “24/7” as an operating goal that requires monitoring and recovery, not as a promise that one broadcast session will last indefinitely.

Clear the music rights first

Check what the license actually permits

Use music you composed or otherwise control, or obtain a license that expressly covers YouTube livestreaming and the uses you intend. Check territory, monetization terms if relevant, and whether the license also covers an archived recording. Keep the license and the rights holder’s contact details where you can find them.

“Royalty-free” does not mean that every use is automatically permitted or free of Content ID issues. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. If it identifies material, the stream may be interrupted or terminated; licensed material can still cause an interruption if the rights holder has not allowlisted your channel through Content ID. An archived live stream may receive a Content ID claim after it ends. A license is not a guarantee of uninterrupted streaming, monetization, or a claim-free archive.

Create the YouTube Live broadcast

  1. Enable live streaming. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and follow the prompts to enable or create a live broadcast. If this is your channel’s first activation, allow up to 24 hours before planning a launch.
  2. Set up the broadcast. Create or schedule the stream and choose its title, description, privacy, and other metadata. Confirm the privacy setting before you start sending a signal.
  3. Choose the encoder connection details. In the Live Control Room, find the encoder settings and copy the server URL and stream key. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts data in transit to Google’s servers; use the RTMPS endpoint shown for your broadcast.
  4. Protect the key. Treat the stream key like a password. Do not put a real key in a public command, screenshot, log, or article. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio before streaming again.

YouTube’s server URL and stream key are the destination details FFmpeg needs. Do not substitute a guessed ingest address for the one shown in the Live Control Room.

Prepare a file that can loop cleanly

One combined file is simplest

A single video file with both the meditation image and soundtrack is the easiest arrangement: FFmpeg reads and loops one input. Listen through the point where it returns to the beginning. A fade or carefully matched endpoints can make the transition less noticeable; a long gap, abrupt cut, or sudden loudness change can be distracting during meditation.

Separate audio and video give more control

If the visuals and soundtrack are separate, the command needs to select the intended streams explicitly and keep them synchronized. For example, the video might be a still or motion background while a longer audio file supplies the music. The combined-file command below does not apply to that arrangement unchanged: identify the right streams with FFmpeg’s -map option and validate how the inputs align and loop before going public.

A static or slowly changing visual can reduce encoding work, but test with the same kind of audio and movement you expect in the real broadcast. Check that the visual is present, the soundtrack is audible without clipping, and the loop does not introduce a disruptive gap.

Build the FFmpeg command for a looping YouTube stream

This is an illustrative starting template, not a tested turnkey production command. It assumes meditation.mp4 contains both audio and video streams and that your FFmpeg build includes libx264. Replace the bitrate and destination placeholders with values and the RTMPS endpoint appropriate to your current YouTube stream profile. Never paste a real stream key into a command you plan to publish.

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i "meditation.mp4"
  -c:v libx264 -pix_fmt yuv420p -r 30 -g 60
  -b:v VIDEO_BITRATE -minrate VIDEO_BITRATE -maxrate VIDEO_BITRATE
  -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
  -f flv "RTMPS_INGEST_URL/STREAM_KEY"

What the important options do

  • -re reads the file at its native frame rate so a file input is paced in real time rather than sent as fast as the computer can process it.
  • -stream_loop -1, placed before the input it applies to, tells FFmpeg to loop that input indefinitely.
  • -i "meditation.mp4" names the input file. Check that it really contains the audio and video streams the command expects.
  • -c:v libx264 encodes video as H.264. YouTube’s current live settings guidance also lists H.265/HEVC and AV1; availability depends on the selected profile and your FFmpeg build.
  • -pix_fmt yuv420p and -r 30 request a common pixel format and 30 frames per second. Choose a resolution and frame rate that match your source and the current YouTube profile.
  • -g 60 at 30 frames per second sets a 60-frame GOP, or a two-second keyframe interval. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed four seconds.
  • -b:v, -minrate, and -maxrate are placeholders for a constant video bitrate. Replace every VIDEO_BITRATE with the same bitrate value selected for the resolution and stream type in YouTube’s current settings; do not leave the placeholder in the command.
  • -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 encodes AAC audio at 128 Kbps and a 44.1 kHz sample rate. YouTube’s settings guidance lists these for stereo audio.
  • -f flv selects the streaming output format used by this template. The final argument is the RTMPS destination, using the server URL and key from your Live Control Room.

FFmpeg options apply in order to the next input or output, so keep input-specific options such as -stream_loop before their input. If audio and video come from different files, map the desired streams explicitly rather than assuming FFmpeg will select the right ones. Confirm codec support, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, keyframe interval, and destination against the current YouTube settings for your stream type before launch. YouTube recommends RTMPS; do not switch to an unencrypted endpoint simply because it appears in an old example.

Test the stream before making it public

  1. Start the broadcast with privacy set to a non-public option while you check the pipeline.
  2. Watch the Live Control Room’s stream health and confirm YouTube is receiving a stable signal.
  3. Listen for clipping, silence, level changes, or an obvious seam when the file loops.
  4. Check the picture for missing frames, unexpected black screens, or a visual that does not match the intended meditation stream.
  5. Test the same kind of audio and movement you intend to use during the public stream; a test with different media may not reveal the same problems.
  6. Only after the signal and content are right, change the broadcast’s privacy or schedule the public launch as appropriate.

Keep an eye on stream health after launch as well. A successful test confirms that the tested setup worked at that time; it does not establish that a long-running process or network connection will never fail.

Operate the stream and plan for recovery

For a local FFmpeg setup, the computer running the process must stay awake and connected to the internet. Disable sleep for the planned operating period, keep the media available at the same path, and arrange a way to notice if FFmpeg exits or YouTube stops receiving a healthy signal. A restart plan, logs, host monitoring, and a human alert path are operational safeguards, not a guarantee of uninterrupted delivery.

If the stream drops, check the Live Control Room’s stream health first, then inspect the FFmpeg output and the host’s network and process status. Restarting FFmpeg may restore ingestion if the broadcast and key are still valid, but the exact recovery behavior depends on the failure and the broadcast state. Verify the result in YouTube Studio rather than assuming that a running FFmpeg process means viewers are receiving a healthy stream.

Plan session lifecycle rather than assuming one endless broadcast

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That guidance does not establish a universal maximum duration or guarantee that one session can run indefinitely. Decide how you will manage session endings, archives, and restarts, and test that procedure before relying on it for a continuous channel. Do not promise viewers that a single broadcast will never need to restart.

Common FFmpeg and YouTube Live problems

Symptom Likely cause What to check
YouTube receives no signal Incorrect or stale server URL or stream key, a command error, or a process that did not start. Copy the current connection details from the Live Control Room, check FFmpeg’s error output, and confirm the broadcast is in the expected state.
Audio or video is missing The input does not contain the streams the command expects, or separate inputs were not mapped as intended. Inspect the file’s streams and, for separate sources, use explicit -map selections and test synchronization.
Stream health is poor or unstable The selected output settings may not suit the source, YouTube profile, host, or available connection. Compare codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, keyframe frequency, and audio settings with the current YouTube guidance for the selected stream type; check host and network stability.
The audio loop has a gap or abrupt transition The source file’s beginning and ending do not join smoothly. Edit or replace the asset and listen through several loop transitions before public launch.
The process stops or the stream drops The host, network, FFmpeg process, or broadcast session may have failed or ended. Check the host and FFmpeg logs, inspect YouTube stream health, and follow the recovery procedure you tested for that broadcast state.
A licensed track triggers a live interruption or archive claim Content ID may identify the material, or the channel may not be allowlisted by the rights holder. Review the license and contact the rights holder about channel allowlisting; do not assume the license alone prevents interruption or claims.

Cost and the local-versus-cloud trade-off

FFmpeg itself is a software workflow, but a local 24/7 stream requires a computer, power, network connectivity, and ongoing attention while it runs. An always-on hosted system moves the process off a home computer, but hosting, setup, monitoring, and recovery depend on the service or infrastructure you choose. No host price or universal sizing requirement is established here, so compare actual provider terms and test your own media and settings.

Or let it run in the cloud

StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; StreamNeo loops the video from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It is for uploaded video playback, not a live camera feed.
